Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 22, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.
TCA News: Lots of kids news out of the annual press tour this week. PBS Kids yesterday previewed its newest series, Odd Squad. The live-action show is aimed at kids ages 5-8, and focuses on problem-solving through the math concepts embedded in each of their cases. Series is created by Tim McKeon (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Adventure Time) and Adam Peltzman (The Electric Company, The Backyardigans), and produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment and The Fred Rogers Company. “Research shows that children who have positive, enriching experiences with math learning at a young age will have greater long-term success,” said Lesli Rotenberg, GM, children’s programming, PBS. “These early math experiences are especially important for kids from low-income families, who typically start school with lower scores in math than their middle-income peers.”

Sprout greenlit original series Little Nina. The program will follow the adventures of Nina, the host of the network’s popular The Good Night Show, as a young Latina girl; it’s slated to debut in mid-2015. “The world we created eight years ago on The Good Night Show has resonated deeply with both children and their caregivers,” said Andrew Beecham, Sprout SVP, programming. “We have so many more stories about these characters to share, as we explore what her multi-ethnic community was like when she was just a preschooler.” The show’s multilingual approach will incorporate English, Spanish and sign language, and will emphasize the value of communicating across multiple languages and appreciating other cultures. Michele Lepe, who plays the role of Nina on The Good Night Show, is an executive producer.
If it ain’t broke… ABC is getting back on the Toy Story bandwagon with a new Disney-Pixar Christmas special in the works for next December. Toy Story That Time Forgot will reunite the gang led by Woody and Buzz, voiced by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, in a new adventure where the coolest set of action figures ever turn out to be dangerously delusional. The announcement comes on the heels of the successful Halloween-y Toy Story Of Terror, which premiered in October and ranked No.1 among Total Viewers and A18-34, giving ABC its best performance in the half-hour in nearly two. In addition, it was the night’s dominant No. 1 show with K2-11 posting the Net’s highest rating in the half-hour in almost 6 years. Special is produced by Galyn Susman and directed by Steve Purcell.
For kids and those adults who refuse to grow up, NBC is following up its The Sound of Music Live! special (18.6 million viewers) with a live performance of Broadway musical Peter Pan on Dec. 4, 2014.

It will premiere in its regular Saturday, 11a time slot on Feb. 22.

During the week leading up to the finale, cast members will each host a night of their favorite episodes.
The Fox Station Group picked up a new two-hour science block produced and distributed by Steve Rotfeld Productions and available for syndication in fall 2014. The weekly block, Xploration Nation, consists of four half-hour shows based on STEM content. The shows will feature outer space, earth science, future technology, and animal science. “Its emphasis on STEM education is timely, important and should appeal to the 13-16 year old target age,” said Frank Cicha, SVP of programming for Fox Television Stations, of the new block. Other groups with Fox affiliates, including Tribune, have also picked up the block.
Distribution360, a marblemedia company, developed the new family property Save My Pet. The sun continues to shine on Disney’s Frozen. After winning a Golden Globe for Best Animated Film came word from top Mouse Bob Iger that Disney is in discussions to develop a stage musical, but no time line has been set, according to Fortune. “We’re not demanding speed,” Iger told Fortune. “We’re demanding excellence.” Frozen already is the No. 2 Disney Animation film of all time, following only The Lion King.
Despicable Me 3? Why yes, says Universal Pictures. The studio is in the works on the third installment of the animated film series, slated for release June 30, 2017. Universal also announced dates for two additional animated films: an untitled comedy directed by Garth Jennings (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and scheduled for release in December 2016, and a new version of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, directed by Pete Candeland and scheduled for release in November 2017.
An interactive version of Nick Jr. will debut on Verizon FiOS later this year, a Viacom rep confirmed to CynKids. My Nick Jr., which will run adjacent to the linear version, will enable parents to craft personalized lineups from live and on-demand versions of shows. The carrier plans to widen distribution to mobile devices, Verizon VP of content strategy and acquisition Terry Denson told The Wall Street Journal. “It’s a way you can quash the momentum of over-the-top players in the marketplace. There’s no reason they should own that space–we should own that space,” Denson told the paper.
Ahead of this year’s Puppy Bowl X, on Feb. 2, Animal Planet is asking fans to vote for the pooch most deserving of the title MVP (Most Valuable Puppy). Another addition: #PuppyBowl Instagrams from viewer’s accounts will air live on TV throughout the show’s six consecutive broadcasts. Viewers can download the free Animal Planet app for exclusive content and a second-screen experience, watch “gifs” on Tumblr, follow Twitter updates from @MeepTheBird and read adoption stories on the fan site.
Apple settled a complaint from the Federal Trade Commission to the tune of $32.5 million regarding the ability of children to make in-app purchases without a parent’s consent. Apple will refund at least that much to consumers, and is also required to change its billing system to ensure that it receives “express, informed consent” before consumers can be charged. The FTC complaint charges that Apple’s billing system failed to alert parents how the billing process worked, as well as about a 15-minute window where users could make an in-app purchase without re-entering a password. Apple is required to change its policies by March 31. New COPPA regulations also address the issue of gaining consent for in-app purchases.
Trigger Happy, creator of animated storytelling app Toon Hero, and Entertainment One co-developed a Toon Hero iOS app extension based on the characters from eOne’s SO SO Happy property. Users can create characters and send greetings, stories, jokes and more without any training. Toon Hero is available in 14 different languages and free to download from the App Store.
