12.17.15 Good morning. It’s Thursday December 17, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Given the miniscule Democratic primary field, it only stands to reason that viewers should them on a small screen. The January 17 presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders (and also one other guy) will live-stream on NBC News‘s YouTube channel. (It will air linearly on NBC.) While other networks have live-streamed this season’s GOP and Democratic debates on their websites, this will mark the first time this election season that a debate has live-streamed over Google‘s video-sharing site.
A plus E = mmmmmmmm. A+E Networks announced that it has taken a stake in the cooking brand Panna. (A+E’s exact share of the company wasn’t announced.) Panna’s subscription app features detailed video recipes delivered by well-known chefs. The partnership has begun with a collaboration between Panna and A+E Networks’ cable property FYI: 12 Hacks of Christmas, a series of 45-second interstitials, set to air every night during FYI’s primetime lineup, ending December 24.
More news from A+E Networks, this time out of East Asia. A+E has inked a deal with Hulu Japan, making much of its programming available to Japanese users. At launch, content will include Pawn Stars and Counting Cars, courtesy of A+E’s The History Channel Japan. In the coming months, programming from the A+E brands Lifetime, Crime & Investigation Network, and FYI will be added to the mix. Hulu Japan is owned by Nippon TV.
CBS Sports Digital has acquired 247Sports, a property featuring numerous team-specific sites spanning multiple sports. All 247Sports content will now be incorporated into CBSSports.com‘s assets. The financial terms of the acquisition weren’t disclosed.
The SVOD service Acorn TV announced that it has acquired two new series. ITV supernatural thriller Midwinter of the Spirit debuts on the service January 11, while season one Canadian crime thriller 19-2 will debut January 18.
Two prime takeaways from the 59-second premiere of Roseanne Barr‘s new web series: The lady likes her ganjah, and she’s a supremely odd duck. We’d expect nothing less. The series, appropriately titled She’s So High!!!!!, can be found on the comedienne’s YouTube channel.
And to think, Matt Damon‘s character in The Martian could have avoided all that unpleasantness if he’d just strapped on a headset. At the South by Southwest festival next March, Fusion will debut The Mars 2030 Experience, a new VR experience simulating NASA‘s proposed mission to Mars. Fusion built the experience with help from the big brains at NASA and MIT. The Mars 2030 Experience will ultimately be available for the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR headsets, as well as for Google Cardboard.
Vimeo‘s Android app has gotten a makeover. The video platform’s updated app features easier video discovery, HD video playback, and a redesigned interface. It also features new curated video categories, including food and travel. Vimeo says it intends to add Google Chromecast support for the app in the first quarter of 2016.
This week sees the official launch of HispanoPost.com, a new Spanish-language platform for print and video journalism. The site initially debuted in beta earlier this month.

Digital marketing and analytics company Amobee Brand Intelligence analyzed the digital content engagement surrounding Tuesday’s GOP debate on CNN. Here are some of their top findings:
– There were 1,081,089 Tweets using the official #GOPDebate hashtag during the debate (meaning between 8:30pm – 11:05pm Eastern Time on December 15).
– With Donald Trump’s controversial stance on Muslim immigration once again raising his profile, he was mentioned in 559,908 Tweets during the debate.
– Twitter sentiment around Donald Trump was 18% Positive, 60% Neutral, and 22% Negative. The 18% Positive sentiment around Trump was actually the most Positive sentiment surrounding any candidate.
– Ted Cruz was the second most discussed presidential candidate on Twitter, receiving 225,738 Tweets. During the same time period, there were 184,536 Tweets that mentioned Ben Carson; 129,204 Tweets around Jeb Bush; and 87,210 Tweets around Carly Fiorina. Marco Rubio came in last with 26,487 Tweets.
– Methodology: Digital content engagement is a measure of what people are seeing, reading, interacting and engaging with on over 600,000 sites on mobile, video, web and social.
The data analytics company Parsely asked hundreds of digital publishers what they considered the most notable digital media trends of the past year. A plurality of respondents said the most notable development of 2015 was the fact that mobile traffic overtook desktop traffic. 21% pointed to the rise of social distribution. In a new study, the German market research firm GfK analyzed TV Everywhere usage. The company found that use of TVE services is growing, especially among members of Gen Y and Gen X. Among other findings, GfK determined that 53% of consumers in pay TV homes have used TV Everywhere to watch shows — 10 points up from 2012. Check out the full study here.
The world’s most adorably-titled digital video company has made a new promotion. Otter Media, jointly owned by AT&T and The Chernin Group, has elevated Sarah Harden to the position of President. Until now, she has served as EVP of Strategy and Investments, a position she assumed when the company was founded in 2014. Before that, she served as EVP of The Chernin Group for two years.
Admit it, you wish this was your job title: Univision Digital has named Alberto Cairo as its first Visualization Innovator-in-Residence. He’ll act as an internal consultant, helping to establish guidelines and strategy for visual information content across the company’s digital platforms. An academic with expertise infographics and data visualization, Cairo holds positions at the University of Miami.
