Duck Dynasty‘s Phil Robertson, whose anti-gay remarks in GQ magazine prompted A&E to put him on “indefinite hiatus,” will be back in 2014. “After discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups,” said a statement from A+E Networks on Friday, “A&E has decided to resume filming later this spring with the entire family.” The company also announced the launch of a public service campaign “promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people… these PSAs will air across our entire portfolio.”
CBS News correspondent John Miller is leaving television for an anti-terrorism role in the New York Police Department, where William Bratton is returning as NYC police commissioner. Miller worked for Bratton during his first go-round in Gotham, as well as during Bratton’s stint in LA. “When you get a call and you get the chance to serve the largest city in the world, potentially the greatest terrorism threat in maybe the greatest police department in the world,” said Miller, “it’s hard to say no.”
In response to Aereo‘s brief letting it be known they have no objection to the Supreme Court ruling on the case of broadcasters versus the streaming service, the Big Four and others replied in a brief of their own. “The time for this Court’s participation is now,” said the document. “Aereo’s response brief gets a great deal wrong, but it gets one important thing right: This exceptionally important case warrants this Court’s immediate review.”
Thirty-five years after its launch, The Dukes of Hazzard returns to TV on CMT Monday, January 6 at 8p. This time around, fans can follow the show on Twitter using #DukesofHazzard.
The Weather Channel is going to the dogs. Literally. TWC is partnering with the American Humane Association in a nationwide search for a therapy dog to assist recovery in communities affected by severe weather; the dog’s experiences will be chronicled on the net.
Another Weather update: Is DirecTV prepared to ice out The Weather Channel? With its carriage agreement with TWC on the verge of expiring, the satellite broadcaster is adding Weather Nation to its offerings.
Ahoy, matey! The most pirated TV show of 2013 was once again HBO‘s Game of Thrones, with 5.9 million worldwide downloads. In second place was AMC‘s Breaking Bad, with 4.2 million downloads.
E! is launching a social media scavenger hunt to promote upcoming series #RichKids of Beverly Hills. Luxury items will be hidden in cities across the country, with clues to their location posted on Instagram. Details on Twitter: @RichKidsofBH; show premieres Sunday, January 19 at 10p.

The Odyssey Media Inc. production, based on a novel by Ronda Rich, “showcases how a community’s spirit and goodwill can help people connect and find each other,” said UP EVP of programming Leslie Glenn Chesloff.
ID kicks off 2014 with January premieres of eight returning series. In addition to the second seasons of My Dirty Little Secret last night and tonight’s Frenemies: Loyalty Turned Lethal at 9p, debuts include:

Cold War spy drama The Americans returns for a sophomore season on FX Wednesday, February 26 at 10p. The series stars rumored real-life couple Keri Russell (Felicity) and Matthew Rhys (Brothers & Sisters).
Time Warner Cable and Viacom reached a new multi-year distribution agreement. TWC will be able to distribute all of Viacom‘s channels, which include MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, on its tablet apps, an arrangement the companies had not agreed on in the past. Now, however, the strategy is to deliver what the announcement of the deal describes as an “enriched multiplatform experience.” TWC will also offer Viacom’s EPIX on demand.

ESPN saw an average of 2,962,000 viewers – based on a 1.8 U.S. Nielsen household rating – for its 2013 NBA Christmas tripleheader. That would rank as the network’s most-watched and highest-rated Christmas tripleheader ever, besting last year’s numbers by 5% in viewership and 6% in rating. Overall for the season, ESPN’s NBA viewership and ratings are now up 4% and 8%, respectively. ABC wasn’t as fortunate, drawing a 3.7 and 4.9 for its pair of games that day in overnight numbers, down 27% and 18% respectively, from 2012.
ESPN also reports that audiences consume 4.1 billion minutes of ESPN content on smartphones and tablets in November, setting a record for the company as an all-time high in the sports category. ESPN Digital Media accounted for 35% of all sports category usage across computers, smartphones and tablets in November, according to comScore Multi-Platform data. Overall, 47.3 million people used ESPN mobile properties in November, the third consecutive month in which more unique people accessed ESPN content on mobile devices than on computers (39.5 million).
With the FCC looking to end blackouts, the NFL announced that 2013 marked a record low tally with only two and 98% of games being televised. Compared to a decade ago, 2003 saw 26 blackouts and 90% of games being televised. In 1993, the numbers were 77 and 66% respectively.
Back to ESPN. The company reports that its famed Monday Night Football franchise wrapped up 2013 as the most-watched series on cable television, and up over 2012 numbers. In total, MNF drew six of cable’s 10 biggest audiences for the calendar year among total viewers and seven of 10 among households. Per Nielsen, ESPN’s 17 Monday Night Football telecasts in 2013 averaged an 8.6 U.S. household rating, representing an average of 13.68 million total viewers. The 2013 season now ranks as the third highest-rated and most-viewed season in ESPN’s history with the show.
Nickelodeon ordered a second season of superhero comedy The Thundermans for 2014. Created and exec-produced by three-time Emmy winner Jed Spingarn (Big Time Rush, Jimmy Neutron) and exec-produced by Dave Hoge and Dan Cross (Just Jordan, Pair of Kings), the scripted half-hour series follows a pair of superhero twins with opposite personalities. The Thundermans airs regularly Saturdays at 9p; season to date, it averages 2.1 million total viewers and has posted double-digit gains with K2-11.
Voting is open on SproutOnline Jan. 1-17 for the network’s second annual Chica Awards, celebrating the best of Sprout in categories such as best siblings, kindest character, best friends, best hero, best furry friend. The event, hosted by Carly and Chica, will air Saturday, Jan. 18.
There’s a doctor in the house. Disney Junior is bringing one of its most successful iOS apps, Doc McStuffins: Time For Your Check Up!, to Android devices in Google Play and for Kindle tablets in the Amazon Appstore. Apple just named the activity-based app its 11th most popular paid iPad app of 2013.
Pretty Little Liars fans who visit the show’s Facebook page through Jan. 7, the date of the ABC Family series return, can unlock special content including photos, script excerpts and videos each day via the Pretty Little Answer Ball app. After interacting with the answer ball, fans will automatically be entered for a chance to win a trip to LA for a “Pretty Little Liars” set visit.
The Sprout Now app launches Jan. 3 for iOS devices.
Teletoon Canada president Len Cochrane will retire in January, following Corus Entertainment‘s recent acquisition of the remaining 50 percent of the company from Bell Media. A founding board member of Teletoon who became president in 2001, Cochrane oversaw years of considerable growth for the company’s five English- and French-language nationwide television networks.
More people used Apple devices for online shopping during the holidays, according to a recent study from IBM‘s Digital Analytics Benchmark Report. iOS devices accounted for 23 percent of online purchases on Dec. 25 itself, with users spending an average of $98.94 per order. Android devices, on the other hand, accounted for a scant 4.6 percent of purchases that same day, and users spent $48.10 per order. Social media played a part as well; shoppers referred from Facebook spent $72.01 per order, and those from Pinterest ponied up $86.83 per order.
The BBC posted a mini-episode of returning favorite Sherlock on its YouTube channel last week. Back for its third season after a two-year hiatus, the seven-minute Sherlock episode is called Many Happy Returns, and has accounted for more than three million views on the channel, which boasts 1.67 million subscribers. The BBC made a similar move in anticipation for Dr.Who’s 50th anniversary special, which aired last month. Sherlock returned on Jan. 1 on BBC One, and will premiere on PBS’s Masterpiece at 10p on Jan. 19.
The Christmas season was good for Twitter: Shares rose 6% to an all-time high on Thursday, almost tripling in value from its November IPO. With a market cap of $40 billion, Twitter is now worth more than much of the S&P 500. It is also far outpacing social peers like Facebook, according to CNBC.
Fandango announced that 2013 was the best year in its 13-year history. Mobile ticket sales increased by 57 percent, with a 15 percent rise in monthly visitors to the site. The Fandango app was downloaded 39 million times.

ABC‘s Sunday, December 22 rebroadcast of Sound of Music didn’t hit the ratings note NBC‘s December 5 Sound of Music Live! did (4.6 in A18-49, 18.5 million viewers), but its 1.3 rating and 6.5 million viewers was up 18 percent in A18-49 and 25 percent in total viewers over its year-ago telecast.
Speaking of… in Live+7 ratings, NBC‘s Sound of Music Live! premiere reached 21.3 million viewers and a 5.6 A18-49 rating, topping every Thursday (excluding sports) since 2004. (The TV playback rankings, below, only count regular telecasts.)
CBS was number one in total viewers (8.81 million) for the 11th time in 13weeks for the week of December 22, according to Nielsen, up 17 percent in viewers and 13 percent in A18-49 versus the same week last year.
Ratings snapshot: According to early numbers, CBS earned a 2.6 rating/9 share in A18-49 and 11 million total viewers on Thursday, December 26 to win the night in both categories. On Wednesday, ABC led a typically low-rated Christmas night among the Big Four in A18-49 with .9/3, with CBS drawing the most total viewers, 4.6 million. CBS scored a double victory on Tuesday, December 24 with a 4.2/9 and 6.6 million viewers. Demo and viewer victories went to ABC Monday night with 1.3/4 in A18-49 and 5.1 million viewers. NBC’s football stole the show on Sunday, December 22 with 4.4/13 and 13 million total viewers. On Saturday, CBS and ABC tied in the A18-49 demo with 1.2/4, with CBS delivering the most total viewers, 9.4 million.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show earned its highest HH rating ever the week of December 9 (3.2), during its 12 Days of Giveaways, jumping 14 percent week to week in W18-49 to score a 1.6 rating, tops in the demo among talk shows.

British television producer Allan McKeown died December 24 of prostate cancer. He was 67. McKeown, who was married to Tracey Ullman, won an Emmy with his wife for Tracey Takes On… and created Showtime’s State of the Union.
The body of producer/director Jeffrey Ian Pollack was found on a running trail in Hermosa Beach on December 23. He was 54. Pollack’s television production credits include Fresh Prince of Bel Air and The Tyra Banks Show.
