NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

The next stop for controversial TV streaming service Aereo just may be the Supreme Court – and that’s just fine with CEO Chet Kanojia. The company has been under fire across the country due to lawsuits from broadcasters like ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, which claim Aereo is stealing their signals without permission. In a statement made yesterday, Kanojia said, “Broadcasters appear determined to keep litigating the same issues against Aereo in every jurisdiction that we enter. We want this resolved on the merits rather than through a wasteful war of attrition.” Broadcasters originally sued the service in March 2012.

YouTube announced in its blog yesterday that all verified accounts can now use the live-stream feature. Previously, the site had limited the access to accounts with 1,000 or more subscribers, and then changed the requirement to only 100 or more subscribers. Additionally, Google users can also now launch a Google+ Hangout on Air with a live-stream from the YT “live events manager” tab.

Simple.TV, the broadcast streaming platform, is integrating Gracenote eyeQ’s digital programming guide into its service. It will feature basic cable and over-the-air content, and provide cast and crew images as well as programming information. Simple.TV’s app is available for iOS, Android and Roku.

CONTENT MEDIA

Fandango launched the second season of its original video series Fandango Frontrunners yesterday. Hosted by Dave Karger, the new season will include a collaboration with Dolby Laboratories and the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The first episode features interviews with Ben Stiller and actors from the movie 12 Years A Slave: Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o. New episodes will air at www.fandango.com/frontrunners over the next few months.

Hulu has acquired four digital series from production studio Shaftesbury‘s digital arm, Smokebomb Entertainment. The new shows include State of Syn (eight episodes of five minutes each), Long Story, Short (11 episodes of five minutes each), Unlikely Heroes (eight episodes of five minutes each) and Totally Amp’d (ten episodes of six minutes each). All four series will roll out on Hulu over the next three months, starting with State of Syn on Jan 18, and Long Story, Short on Feb 15.

Smokebomb, by the way, has also been selected by Mind Pirate and Canadian Film Centre’s ideaBoost to create a State of Syn app for Google Glass. It’s expected to launch in March 2014.

Netflix received six Golden Globes nominations yesterday. Its original, Orange Is The New Black, snagged a Best Actress, Drama nod for star Taylor Schilling. House of Cards earned a nom for “Best TV Drama;” Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Corey Stoll all received nominations, too. Jason Bateman was recognized for his role in the Netflix remake of Arrested Development. The Globes air January 12 on NBC.

The Jerry Seinfeld web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee will return with six new episodes exclusively on Crackle and comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com on Jan 2. Crackle says the series is its most-watched original show. The guest lineup will be announced next week.

Major League Gaming, the owner of online broadcast network for pro gaming MLG.tv, released data showing that its audience surpassed traditional sports viewing online by consuming more than 54 million hours of online video, greater than the 14 million hours of NCAA March Madness Live this past year. MLG’s audience is 90 percent male, and the network is known for the show eSports Report and the event MLG Pro Circuit Championship.

MTV launched an online Facebook challenge for fans of its show Teen Wolf to unlock a trailer for part two of season three at www.TeenWolfTrailer.com. MTV has developed online games for Teen Wolf fans in the past, such as Facebook game The Hunt, which grew the show’s Facebook likes by 127 percent.

Proclaiming, “TV is dead. Long live TV,” a new report from Citi Research says it’s just a matter of time before digital delivery replaces broadcast and cable as the primary form of video consumption. “TV will migrate from the push-based delivery of linear channels over closed TV systems, to a pull-based delivery of specific shows via an app over an open system,” predicted Citigroup analysts in the report, saying Netflix is leading the charge.

HBO launched a “social media comedy roast” of Game of Thrones villain Joffrey Baratheon on December 12, aimed at continuing the conversation about the reviled character. “Join @GameofThrones’ #GoTFans today in a celebration of our love to hate King Joffrey Baratheon,” said the net’s post. Working with agency 360i, HBO reached out to show talent and celebrity fans for content, posting the best tweets on RoastJeffrey.com.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Instagram announced a new feature yesterday called Instagram Direct, which allows users to share private pictures and videos with up to 15 specific followers. The feature can be accessed when Android or Apple device users update their Instagram app.

RESEARCH

Tablets have doubled the share of mobile ad impressions over the past year, according to Adfonic’s Q3 2013 Global AdMetrics Report. Apple tablets increased ad impressions by 13 percent from 2012, and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 2 grew by 15 percent. The study also found that advertisers’ demand for mobile ads increased from 342 million ad requests in 2012 to two billion this year.

Univision Communications has appointed Mehul Nagrani as its new Senior Vice President and General Manager of Digital. Nagrani was formerly the company’s Senior Vice President of Digital Operations.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Twitter named some of the top tweets of 2013 in a blog post released yesterday. The most retweeted tweet of the year, or the “golden tweet” as Twitter called it, went to Glee actress Lea Michele’s first public acknowledgement of the death of her costar Cory Monteith in July. Twitter revealed the Tweet had 408,000 retweets from 133 countries. The blog almost mentioned two other golden tweets, including the death of actor Paul Walker this month, which was tweeted by his staff and retweeted 400,367 times. The third went to the boy band One Direction’s Niall Horan tweeting about his 20th birthday, and getting 367,236 retweets. Twitter also unveiled 2013.twitter.com that explores top highlights in News, Entertainment and Sports and features custom timelines with big tweets from the year. Finally, Twitter also released a “thank you” video, which can be watched at www.cynopsis.com.
