PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Barry & Joe: The Animated Series, following the adventures of Barack Obama and Joe Biden as time travelers out to save the world, is in development, with Titmouse and Conan O’Brien as exec producers. The “bromantic comedy” project from creator Adam Reid got a leg up with over $100,000 scored on Kickstarter. “My nerdy heart is exploding,” said Reid. “This has been a grassroots effort, so to now be working with Conan and Titmouse is a creative dream come true. I’m hopeful we’ll find a home for the series together.”
Pilgrim Media set a development deal with Josh Greenberg, showrunner and co-exec producer of Lip Sync Battle. Working with Pilgrim’s chief creative officer, Johnny Gould, and VP and head of development, Nicole Silveira, Greenberg will develop and EP formats in the music competition space, as well as other unscripted content.
All in the family, again: CBS is developing Class Action, based on Jay McGraw’s experiences at Texas University. Law school comedy comes from McGraw and dad Dr. Phil McGraw’s Stage 29 Productions, Dan O’Shannon (Modern Family), John Cochran (The Millers) and CBS Television Studios. CBS’s Bull, of course, is based on the elder McGraw’s real life experiences.
Studio 100 is expanding internationally by taking over New York-based company Little Airplane Productions (Wonder Pets, Small Potatoes), the animation studio founded by Josh Selig in 1999. “There is a great synergy between our businesses and our teams, and we look forward to creating and producing new content together that will resonate with children around the world,” said Selig.
Procedural Bad Medicine has been put in development by NBC. The project from Mark Kruger, David Janollari,T.G.I.M. Films and Universal Television teams a recently disgraced doctor and a former NYPD detective.

Are you making the most of Artificial Intelligence to get content discovered and keep viewers engaged? While we’re still “at the nascent state of AI in media and advertising,” says Mindshare North America’s Rachel Lowenstein, a featured speaker at Wednesday’s webinar, Using Artificial Intelligence to Capture & Captivate Audiences, “delivering on the 1:1 personalization that AI can afford a brand to have with consumers will not just be a differentiator in the intelligent not-so-distant future, but a crucial requirement.” To find out what you need to know to get ahead of the game in employing this critical new tool, register for the March 6 event here.
TV One original film Behind the Movement, telling the story of the history-making Montgomery Bus Boycott, will premiere in February, Black History Month.
CBS special MVP: Most Valuable Performer airs live on Thursday, January 25 at 9p. The interactive talent show will look for the pro football player with the best off-the-field talent (think archery, rapping and Irish step dancing). As for a certain big game, “For any finalist whose day job might take them to the Super Bowl and prohibit them from appearing live on the show, we still plan to honor and call attention to their talent,” said Robert Horowitz, Juma Entertainment prez.
Another CBS special, Christmas Eve with Fairfield University, will broadcast December 24 (of course) at 11:35p.
NEW AND RETURNING SERIES

DIGITAL DATA
Netflix picked up Chinese drama Day and Night, about a detective trying to clear his twin brother from a murder charge, to air in over 190 markets. The series, which debuted in August, is off to a strong start – it’s had over 4 billion views in China.
Stranger Things was renewed for season 3 by Netflix. Season 2 launched last month, with a premiere episode that drew 15.8 million U.S. viewers in Live+3, according to Nielsen. Not making it to season 3 is Haters Back Off, a comedy based on a popular YouTube character created by and starring Colleen Ballinger.
Turner and Refinery29 hosted a 2-day comedy-writing workshop aimed at fostering new female talent in comedy. The Riot Comedy Lab took place from December 2-3, with 8 emerging female comedy writers partnered with established TV comedy writers, who provided feedback and advice on their ideas for TV series. At the workshop’s conclusion, Turner and Refinery29 chose one web series idea from the bunch, greenlighting a pilot to be distributed across TBS’s digital platforms.
ADVERTISING
Ad spending on the 2018 midterm elections will hit $8.5 billion, predicts Borrell Associates, up 2.5% over 2014. Broadcast TV will rake in $3.4 billion in ads, digital media will take $1.9 billion and cable TV $994 million, says Borrell, adding they expect nearly half of all digital political advertising to be placed programmatically.
CASTING
Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich) is set recur opposite Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph in Amazon’s untitled comedy from Master of None co-creator Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard.
DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE
Newsmax TV has expanded its cable/satellite TV reach with a new carriage distribution agreement with Dish.
