From Sling Blade to Bad Santa to FX’s Fargo, Billy Bob Thornton has an illustrious history of playing thieves and killers. Now he’ll try the other side of the law on for size. Amazon confirmed that it has greenlit Trial, a new Thornton-starring drama set to run exclusively on Amazon Prime next year. The series, in which Thornton plays a lawyer seeking redemption, will be available in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Austria, and Japan. David E. Kelley, Jonathan Shapiro, and Ross Fineman will EP. William Hurt is set to co-star.



, AOL’s live-streaming app, has partnered with the clothing company Guess as part of the launch of a new verified accounts feature. Called “Kanvas Official,” Kanvas’s verified accounts are designed to let brands and influencers establish a presence on the platform. Meanwhile, Guess and Kanvas have launched #GUESSAllAccess, a new promotional campaign. The companies also collaborated on the live-stream of an event in Miami last night.
, a children’s entertainment distributor and production company owned by Corus Entertainment, announced several new content deals this week. The company sold more than 800 episodes of kid-friendly content to multiple SVOD services, including South-East Asia’s iFlix, Vubiquity’s Latin American arm, Chile’s VTR, and the US distributor Cinedigm. ’s Discover platform is about to get more social media exposure. Discover features content from a select group of 16 Snapchat partners including CNN, Vice, and VOX; until now, said partners have been unable to link directly to their pages on social channels such as Facebook and Twitter. That’s about to change. One result is that companies will be able measure social media user engagement relating to Snapchat articles and videos.
So what does it mean for the future?
In an email to Cynopsis Digital, Jason Klein, Co-CEO & Co-Founder of the analytics company ListenFirst Media, weighed in on Snapchat’s move. “It’s a great move for Snapchat as it allows their publishing partners to leverage Facebook and Twitter to drive new viewers of their content at Snapchat – particularly when the jury is still out about just how valuable a deal it is for publishing partners,” he wrote.

“From an analytics standpoint, it’s quite valuable to companies like ours because, to date, Snapchat has kept all their data close to the vest. Now, we’ll have the ability to find proxies for Snapchat engagement through the analysis that our platform performs on Facebook and Twitter. The real story, though, is that for Snapchat to continue to grow its advertising business, they’ll need to start making more data available directly to advertisers and analytics partners to understand and value these opportunities. All one needs to do is take a look at Facebook or Twitter to understand that making data available to ecosystem partners helps all parties understand how to maximize the value of advertising opportunities. I hope this is the beginning of Snapchat’s willingness to play outside their walled garden.”


’s digital documentary studio, launched in January, is getting ready to make its impact felt. CNN is set to air a series of new short docs across its online platforms. The first, titled All-American Family, centers on a pair of brothers who play high school football for the California School for the Deaf; it debuted Monday on CNN.com and the mobile platform CNNgo. More docs are set to bow in the coming weeks.

Users can now web-browse, watch video, and Tweet to their hearts’ content, all within the immersive bounds of VR. Samsung has even introduced a hands-free typing feature. But be aware, the Gear VR headset can’t be used without a Samsung smartphone.
Expensive VR headsets are starting to hit the market – but for the foreseeable future, many consumers will be fulfilling all their VR needs with Google Cardboard. The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is donating $3 to (RED), Bono’s AIDS-fighting organization, for every use of a new “World AIDS Day” geofilter on Snapchat. The foundation will also kick in another $1 million – but only if a whacky new music video featuring Jimmy Kimmel, Scarlett Johansson, and Barry Manilow is shared more than 333,000 times.
