Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 2, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Football, especially ratings-wise, continues to be king both on the college and the NFL level. One of the latest examples was Sunday night when the Denver Broncos’ 29-16 win over Kansas City Chiefs on NBC’s Sunday Night Football pulled in a 13.2/20 overnight to rank as the #1 primetime show in HH rating. The 13.2/20 HH overnight for Broncos-Chiefs was up 9% from Week 13 last year, which was 12.1/19 for the New York Giants’ 7-point win over Washington.

ON THE AIR

CBS also scored another big hit on Sunday, posting the season’s highest NFL overnight rating (19.2) for its 4 pm window that had the New England Patriots at Green Bay Packers.

ESPN’s "College GameDay" will head to Waco, Texas for a football game for the first time when it broadcasts on Saturday from Baylor’s McLane Stadium against Kansas State.

TVA Sports announced a six-year renewal of its deal with the Toronto Blue Jays as the team’s official French-language broadcaster. TVA Sports will carry at least 60 Blue Jays games annually.

Dish Network‘s carriage deal with NBC Sports Group for four Comcast SportsNet RSNs was set to expire at midnight last night, without a new agreement reached prior to the deadline.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and ESPN announced a new multi-year program focusing on key ESPN College Football properties.  Effective immediately, the Reese’s brand will serve as an official sponsor of the new College Football Playoff (CFP), official sponsor of ESPN College GameDay Built by the Home Depot and sponsor of ESPN College Football. As part of the agreement, the Reese’s brand will secure promotional rights to the College Football Playoff, College GameDay and ESPN College Football trademarks for use in advertising, on-pack, point-of-sale displays and more. The Reese’s brand will also have on-site activation at the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship in Arlington, Texas, on January 12, 2015.

Winemaker Jacob’s Creek signed Novak Djokovic as an endorser just in time for January’s Australian Open. A key part of the partnership will be a film shot in Djokovic’s hometown of Belgrade.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach claimed Monday there won’t be a chance that the 2022 Winter Olympics and World Cup would be held at the same time. The BBC quotes Bach as saying, "there would be no winners" if the two events are held concurrently. The timing of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been repeatedly questioned, given the region’s extreme heat.

The Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (MLS) have signed three new “multi-year” corporate partnerships ahead of the 2015 season. Dogfish Head Brewery, applesauce manufacturer Musselman’s, and the Delaware Express car and shuttle bus company are all onboard.

The announced crowd of 78,431 for Patriots-Packers Sunday was a record for Lambeau Field, while a Seattle Sounders postseason record crowd of 46,758 attended the second leg of the MLS Western Conference Championship at CenturyLink Field, where Seattle was eliminated by the LA Galaxy.

DIGITAL AND TECHNOLOGY

Vox Media, the parent company of SB Nation, closed a $46.5M round of financing from investment firm General Atlantic. Vox’s seven online publications combined to double their online traffic in ’14 to about 150 million unique visitors a month.

The National Football Foundation launched FootballMatters.org as part of its ongoing efforts to promote the value of the sport in producing leaders and creating educational opportunities.

The Kansas City Royals will implement digital ticketing for all season-ticket accounts for the 2015 season. Learfield Sports repositioned its university partnership team. Bob Agramonte, senior vice president, was promoted to chief business development officer. Gary Sobba, currently general manager of Learfield’s UNC Tar Heel Sports Properties, will join as senior vice president.

MLB Network announced that after a 14-year career, Carlos Pena has joined its lineup of on-air talent as a studio analyst. Pena, who served as a guest analyst on MLB Network during the 2014 and 2009 Postseasons, will appear across MLB Network’s studio programming and make his debut on MLB Now and MLB Tonight this Thursday, December 4. 

THE MAIN EVENT

60 Minutes Sports on Showtime debuts a new show at 10 PM (ET) with a profile of Tyler Summitt (son of legendary women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt) and his quest for basketball coaching greatness. Additional segments will include American-style football leagues in Southeast Asia and a look at Army football as it tries to break its long losing streak this week against Navy.
