NHL teams will be wearing helmet ads during the 2020-21 season. The New Jersey Devils became the first team to unveil sponsorship on Tuesday, donning Prudential logos. The brand was named the first helmet ad sponsor in league history in a one-year deal. Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals announced a season-long partnership with Capital One that will have the financial corporation’s branding on team’s helmets at home and away games as well as the playoffs. The Nashville Predators have followed suit, sharing that the Bridgestone logo will appear on their team’s helmets this season.

NHL teams hope to earn more than $15 million combined with helmet ads this season. The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs are already eyeing $1 million sponsorship deals. Analytics firm Navigate estimates that a season of space on NHL helmets will be worth as much as $2.5 million in fair market value for an average team.


NBA TV tips off its 2020-21 regular season schedule on Saturday, December 26 with eight matchups in three nights. The network’s first night of back-to-back tripleheaders begins with the Memphis Grizzlies hosting the Atlanta Hawks at 5p, followed by NBA TV Saturday Night presented by State Farm coverage of the Philadelphia 76ers at the New York Knicks at 7:30p and the Houston Rockets at the Portland Trail Blazers at 10p. On Sunday, December 27, the LA Clippers host the Dallas Mavericks at 3:30p, followed by the Brooklyn Nets at the Charlotte Hornets at 7p, and wrapping up with the Los Angeles Lakers hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves at 9:30p. The first NBA TV Center Court doubleheader on Monday, December 28 features the Grizzlies vs. the Nets at 7:30p and the Trail Blazers at the Lakers at 10p.

A special Christmas Day edition of the NFL on FOX, NFL Network and Amazon Prime Video airs Friday, December 25 at 4:30p with the New Orleans Saints hosting the Minnesota Vikings. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman call the action from Mercedes-Benz Stadium, along with sideline reporters Erin Andrews and Kristina Pink.

Amazon Prime Video continues its week-long “NFL Holiday Blitz” programming with the San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals airing globally on December 26 at 4:30p. It’s the first NFL game to air on an exclusive national basis on Prime Video and Twitch and will be available in more than 240 countries.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football telecast of the Cincinnati Bengals’ upset over the Pittsburgh Steelers scored15% year-over-year audience growth, a fifth consecutive week on MNF viewership gains. The game drew more than 12.7 million viewers with the final full quarter rising to 13.0 million.

The NFL on CBS’ week 15 doubleheader coverage on Sunday, December 20 scored big in the ratings. Viewership for the national and regional game windows combined for the day averaged 19.1 million viewers, up +15% compared to the average of its prior seven doubleheader weekends this season (16.8 million), and was CBS’ best doubleheader average of the season. In addition, viewership of the national 4:25p game window averaged 22.9 million viewers, which was the most-watched program on television for the month of December. The national window was highlighted by the Kansas City-New Orleans game. On CBS All Access, Week 15 was the most-streamed week of the NFL season, and Sunday’s Kansas City-New Orleans matchup was the most streamed of the regular season matchup.

The 2020 ACC Championship Game between Notre Dame and Clemson was one for the record books. It garnered 10.2 viewers across all TV and streaming platforms, ranking as the most-watched conference championship game this weekend and the most-viewed ACC Championship of all time. The game averaged 9.9 million viewers on ABC, up 149% year-over-year.

Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir host U.S. Figure Skating: 100th Anniversary Special Presented by Prevagen on Sunday, December 27 at 2p on NBC. The two-hour program relives top performances from the U.S. Championships over the past decade and features interviews with prominent skaters, including Nathan Chen, Meryl Davis, Charlie White, Mariah Bell and Gracie Gold.

Tiger, a two-part documentary centering on the rise, fall and comeback of Tiger Woods, debuts Sunday, January 10 at 9p on HBO Sports. Part II follows on Sunday, January 17 at 9p. The doc features never-before-seen footage and interviews with those who know the golfer best, including his former caddy and close friend, Steve Williams; golf legend Sir Nick Faldo; Earl Woods’ friend and biographer, Pete McDaniel; Tiger’s first love, Dina Parr; and Rachel Uchitel, the woman at the center of the sex scandal that altered Tiger’s world, breaking her silence with her first sit-down interview about their relationship.

The National Women’s Hockey League 2021 Isobel Cup Semifinals and Final will air live exclusively on NBCSN, marking the first time women’s professional hockey games will air on a major national network in the U.S. Isobel Cup Semifinals will be broadcast from Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY on Thursday, February 4 at 5:30p and 8p, followed by the Isobel Cup Final on Friday, February 5 at 7p.

ESPN released Ready for Playoffs, the latest creative promoting the 2020 postseason of the NFL on ESPN, including the 90s song “You’re Still the One” from Shania Twain. “The response from fans and the sports community to our ‘Ready for Football’ season kickoff creative featuring Celine was overwhelming. We’re taking a similar approach to reflect fans’ emotions heading into the playoffs,” said Laura Gentile, SVP of Marketing & Social Media, ESPN. “This time we dusted off another classic 90’s love song, now featuring Shania Twain, to capture the joy, appreciation, and relief making through an NFL season full of incredible ups and downs.”

ESPN’s Men’s College Basketball schedule includes key matchups, this week. Among the highlights: Wednesday, December 23 features Pac-12 action as No. 25 Oregon hosts UCLA at 3p on ESPN2 and No. 8 Tennessee hosts USC Upstate at 5p on SEC Network. The Saturday, December 26 lineup includes a rivalry matchup between Kentucky and Louisville at 1p on ESPN and No. 6 Houston vs. UCF at 2p on ESPN2.

World Chase Tag USA announced that December 23 has been designated “World Chase Tag Day Across the U.S.A.” to celebrate the inaugural season of WCT airing in the United States. Beginning at 3p on Wednesday, NBC Sports will present 10 hours of WCT programming on NBCSN. The marathon runs from 3p-7p and resumes 9p-3a and features athletes from across the nation.

The Home Depot College Football Awards will be presented virtually on Thursday, January 7 at 7p on ESPN. Rece Davis will host the 90-minute special, joined by reporter Holly Rowe.

Christian Pulisic and Chelsea visit Arsenal in a Boxing Day matchup on Saturday, December 26 at 12:30p on NBC and Universo, highlighting a stretch of holiday season matches across 9 or 10 days across NBC Sports. The weekend coverage begins Saturday on NBCSN with Premier League Mornings at 7a, followed by Jamie Vardy and second-place Leicester City hosting Marcus Rashford and third-place Manchester United at 7:30a. At 10a, Aston Villa host Crystal Palace on NBCSN, and Southampton visit Fulham on Peacock Premium. Following Arsenal-Chelsea, the day’s match coverage concludes at 3p as Kevin de Bruyne and Manchester City host Newcastle on NBCSN and Universo, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin and fourth-place Everton travel to face Sheffield United on Peacock Premium.

The agreement will allow Hotels.com to engage with NBA fans and travelers through integrated efforts. As part of the deal, Hotels.com will have an in-game presence with brand integration on the top of the backboard for nationally televised games throughout the season across ABC, ESPN and TNT.

Esports tournament organizer BLAST Premiere extended its partnership with online bookmaker Betway. The deal ensures Betway will maintain a strong presence across BLAST Premier’s world class Counter-Strike tournament in 2021 for a third consecutive year. Betway’s branding will feature heavily across all seven of BLAST Premier’s CS:GO tournaments next year, including more branded content opportunities on the back of 2020 and a number of bespoke giveaways on offer.

The Philadelphia 76ers have joined forces with BetMGM, making it an Official Sports Betting Partner of the team. The deal features TV-visible signage, including BetMGM’s logo on the pole pads during 76ers games, and fan-focused engagement campaigns. Alexandra Botez and Andrea Botez have inked a deal with Envy Gaming. The duo, who are known as the Botez sisters, have signed on as content creators and streamers officially representing the Texas-based esports organization. With the sisters signed on as its inaugural talent, Envy is launching a creator network and ambassador program that will expand to feature diverse cultural and gaming personalities in 2021.

More than half a billion viewers tuned in for the international World Cyber Games 2020 Connected competition. The Grand Final was streamed on 17 different platforms locking in nearly 650 million views.


The NBA rescinded the Milwaukee Bucks’ 2022 second round draft pick, after determining the team violated leagues rules governing the timing of this season’s free agency discussions. Following an investigation, the league concluded that the Bucks had discussions with Bogdan Bogdanovic and/or his agent regarding a free agent contract prior to the date such discussions are permitted, constituting conduct detrimental to the NBA. The penalty took into account the Bucks’ cooperation with the investigation, the absence of evidence of impermissible early agreement on the terms of a contract between the team and Bogdanovic, and the fact that the Bucks ultimately did not sign him.

The Toronto Blue James have been named recipient of the 2020 Allan H. Selig Award for Philanthropic Excellence. CUMULUS MEDIA/Westwood One and Horizon media commissioned MARU/Matchbox to execute a study to learn fans’ thoughts on cardboard cutouts of fans, digital audiences, generated fan noise and more. Among the key findings: COVID-19 did not diminish the spirit of fans, especially those who listen on AM/FM radio. Ads tested in a fanless scenario, without supplemental fan or crowd noise, resulted in video ads feeling less informative than those with it. Audio ads performed better in a broadcast with fan noise versus a fanless environment. Despite scheduling changes, most sports fans continued tuning in to their usual sports, and younger fans were more likely to tap into new ones. Meanwhile, 40% of fans said a big part of the game experience is the fans themselves – the chants, songs and reactions.
