IN THE NEWS

CBS ordered five more episodes of Chuck Lorre’s “B Positive,” securing it a full season. Through its first five episodes, the freshman comedy has averaged five million viewers and 0.6 among A18-49 on Thursday nights.

Joe Exotic has filed a complaint with the Justice Department, demanding that the DOJ submit a petition to President Trump for the incarcerated “Tiger King” star be considered for a pardon. The “gay, gun-toting, redneck” (his words) is serving a 22-year sentence for animal abuse and attempting to put a hit on his rival, Carole Baskin.

Congress’ new COVID-19 relief package includes a measure that would make it a felony to operate a pirated streaming service. Penalties for those who “willfully, and for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain, offer or provide to the public a digital transmission service” of unauthorized movies and TV shows includes prison time.

Univision Communications is planning a new Spanish-language streamer, reports Bloomberg News. The service would reportedly be more extensive than Univision Now, launched in 2015.

Genius Media Group, The Nation Company and The Progressive have brought an antitrust lawsuit against Google for alleged anticompetitive conduct in the online display advertising market. “Google has achieved and maintained a monopoly or near-monopoly in that marketplace by erecting a toll bridge between publishers and advertisers and charging an unlawfully high price for passage,” say the companies in a class-action complaint. “Specifically, Google’s Ad Server – the software or code that publishers use to make critical decisions about advertising content – imposes anticompetitive rules and conduct that artificially warp the channels through which publishers sell their ad placement inventory.” Sweepstakes Today filed a similar lawsuit, charging Google with competitive interference “to benefit its own properties and harm rival publishers.” Google is also facing lawsuits from 48 attorneys general, which the company said it will fight.

Democratic contenders Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock have spent $94.2 million and $64.7 million, respectively, on the hotly contested special election US Senate races in Georgia as of December 11, reports AdImpact. Republican incumbants David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler have spent $43.5 million and $47.6 million.

AT&T and Tegna reached a new retransmission deal that has Tegna’s 64 stations back on AT&T’s platforms, including DirecTV. In a joint statement, the companies said they “regret any inconvenience” to their customers, and thank them for their patience. The stand-off lasted almost three weeks.

Fox Corp. and Sinclair inked a multi-year renewal for Fox affiliates in 25 markets. “These renewals reflect the mutually beneficial network-affiliate model, which integrates the network’s primetime and sports programming with our stations’ local news and syndicated content,” said Barry Faber, President of Distribution and Network Relations for Sinclair.

How does the absence of fans impact the viewing of sports events during the pandemic? Cumulus Media/Westwood One and Horizon Media commissioned MARU/Matchbox to execute a study, and found:
* Ads tested in a fanless scenario, without supplemental fan or crowd noise, resulted in video ads feeling less informative than those within the supplemental fan noise environment.
* While supplemental fan noise may restore some of the feelings and sounds of normalcy, fans want a more participatory experience even if they can’t attend in person.
* 40% of fans say a big part of the game experience is the fans themselves – the chants, songs, and reactions.
* Despite scheduling changes, most sports fans continued tuning in to their usual sports, and younger fans were more likely to tap into new ones.“
Fans yearn to experience sports in person,” said Karen Van Vleet, VP, WHY at Horizon Media. “However, while the heart may be willing the head is saying ‘not so fast.’ As uncertainties over COVID continue, sports fans are leaning more into a variety of types of media and interests to meet their sports needs.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

“The Book of Boba Fett” is a separate series, not the third season of “The Mandalorian,”
revealed executive producer Jon Favreau on Monday’s “Good Morning America.” Teased at the end of “The Mandelorian” season two finale, details were not shared along with the streamer’s other recent announcements because “we didn’t want to spoil the surprise,” said Favreau. Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen will star in the spin-off, reprising their roles as Boba Fett and assassin Fennec Shand, with Favreau exec producing with Dave Filoni and Robert Rodriguez. The series is expected to drop in December 2021; production on season three of “The Mandelorian” will begin as soon as “The Book of Boba Fett” is complete.

“Inkwell,” a drama from Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz (“Antebellum”) and their Gloaming Productions, has been put in development by HBO Max.

TECH TALK

“TV will continue to be redefined in this decade but what is clear is that streaming will be central to its future,” notes FreeWheel’s Council for Premium Video study, “The Evolution of Streaming.” Insights for advertisers on the future of OTT include:
· OTT is a big area of opportunity for advertisers looking to incrementally reach more of their desired audience, but knowing its relative scale is important: 54% of streaming viewership is ad-supported (Nielsen), however at least 20% of that is not considered premium/high-quality.
· Linear TV accounts for roughly two-thirds of all viewing, and its combination with streaming planning and buying can maximize reach and optimize frequency, particularly with the inclusion of first-party data.
· For programmatic buying of OTT inventory, pre-bid bot protection capabilities are vital to ensure that non-human traffic is eliminated before it even becomes a problem for advertisers.

Mobile-first advertising platform Nativex announced a strategic partnership with TikTok that has XMP by Nativex joining TikTok’s Marketing Partners program. Through the XMP platform, users can create, distribute, and manage workflows associated with their campaigns. Users have total transparency into the creative content of a given campaign, and can fully automate creative and campaign management across TikTok and other major advertising platforms. Features such as batch and template-based ad creation allows advertisers to scale campaigns. “Marketers and advertisers realize the new audience engagement opportunities surrounding TikTok, and are fighting for a way in,” said Jin Ye, head of XMP, Nativex. “This partnership ensures marketers and advertisers can better execute campaign initiatives through TikTok and achieve greater results.”

GOING GLOBAL
