IN THE NEWS

“Yellowstone” prequel “1923” premiere scored 7.4 million total viewers across linear broadcasts and streaming, ranking as Paramount+’s most-watched premiere, as well as the top cable series premiere of the year. “Yellowstone” is the gift that keeps on giving – the 2018 series debut delivered 2.8 million people, while the season five premiere saw 10.3 million viewers. Said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Paramount Media Networks & MTV Entertainment Studios, “Taylor Sheridan continues to tap a cultural nerve that has proven irresistible to viewers across the country and around the world, with this newest installment showing no signs of slowing down – proving yet again the power of our franchise strategy to fuel the future of Paramount+.”

An Emmys shake-up: The Television Academy is replacing the Variety Talk and Variety Sketch Series categories with Talk Series and Scripted Variety Series. Shows like HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” now fall into Scripted Variety Series, pitting them against the likes of “Saturday Night Live.” In addition, the Single Camera and Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series categories have been combined into Picture Editing for a Comedy Series, and there is now one category for Cinematography for a Series (previously divided by camera count). The Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program is now Outstanding Reality Competition Program, and competition shows with children as contestants will fall under the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards.

Paramount Global has canceled its reservation at Carnegie Hall for Upfront season. In a statement, Paramount President of US Ad Sales John Halley said instead of a flashy theater event, the company will host “a series of high-impact, intimate gatherings in April for each of our major agency partners and their clients.” While Paramount will likely not be the only media company to adjust its plans, NBCUniversal is still holding its annual presentation on May 15 at Radio City Music Hall, as well as a separate event for Telemundo on the same day.

Over 250 late-night writers pledged to support the WGA Diversity Initiative to increase DEI in comedy-variety writers’ rooms. The pledge addresses biases and aims to create mechanisms to support the process for BIPOC writers to succeed, stating, “We must create an industry in which diversity is not an aspirational goal but is a fundamental trait.”

SPORTS

Argentina wasn’t the only World Cup winner – Fox and Telemundo scored record ratings. Approximately 16.8 million people watched Fox’s coverage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 final between Argentina and France on Sunday, the most-watched men’s World Cup telecast in English-language TV history. Telemundo Deportes’ Spanish-language coverage averaged 9 million fans on Telemundo, Peacock and digital platforms, up 65% from the 2018 final. In contrast, the 2018 World Cup final between France and Croatia was the lowest US audience for a World Cup final since 2002, bringing in about 12.51 million viewers.

Robert A. Fishman will receive the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award for television direction. With a half-century at the network under his belt, the CBS director of televised sporting events has directed three Olympic Winter Games, two World Series, 39 NCAA Final Fours, 27 US Open championships, 21 Daytona 500s and countless NFL and NBA playoffs. Said DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter, “Bob has been the quintessential storyteller in live sports, directing across the broadest possible spectrum.”

“Factory of Dreams: Benfica” will premiere tonight on FOX Soccer Plus. The new four-part soccer docuseries from NEO Studios will follow S.L. Benfica, the Lisbon, Portugal, soccer club during the 2021-22 season

Media and experiences company For Soccer Ventures reports record growth in 2022. TECH TALK

Netflix’s ad-supported tier Basic with Ads has had a “modest” start, according to a study by Antenna. Last month, 9% of new Netflix subscribers opted for the tier, while a quarter of new sign-ups chose the Premium plan – the option without ads – followed by Standard and Basic. Antenna estimated that only 0.1% of current US subscribers switched from ad-free to Basic with Ads, excluding free tiers, pay TV providers, telco distribution and select bundles. Currently, the streaming platform has 73.4 million subscribers in North America.

Talent discovery app Husslup raised a $2.5 million seed roundup from women-led funds. Connecting over 4,000 creatives in media and entertainment with more than 40 companies looking to hire, the startup’s fundraiser was aimed at fixing Hollywood’s staffing problem. Founder and CEO H Schuster said the achievement “reinforces Husslup’s mission of democratizing access to the entertainment industry.”

Digital ad spending declined 1% in November, according to a study by Standard Media Index. Linear TV ad spending fell 12%, while “digital video” rose 7% in November.

Amazon has expanded Fire TV capabilities with thousands of free music videos, videos and ad-supported content. Customers will find personalized recommendations and pre-made playlists, as well as esports and news from major news outlets. On the “Home” page, users can scroll through news genres, sports highlights and more.

Jeff Bezos has backed off from tech development with the Washington Post. When he purchased the paper in 2013, Bezos declared his goal was to transform it into a media and technology leader in the digital age. However, earlier this month, the Post folded Zeus, its ad tech platform, as it looks to create a media bundle of cooking and games, similar to that of The New York Times.

CASTING

Nicholas Barasch and Karl Walcott will star in the seventh and final season of CW’s “Riverdale.” Barasch will play Julien Blossom, the red-headed bully, and Walcott will play Clay Walker, a champion for social justice. After surviving Bailey’s comet, the series will take place in 1955 – with the core four Archie Comics characters returning to high school, despite the reset.

Joely Richardson has joined the Netflix adaptation of David Nicholls’ “One Day.” She joins Ambika Mod, Eleanor Tomlinson and “The White Lotus” breakout star Leo Woodall.
