IN THE NEWS
General market audio ads had lower impact on brand preference than ads created to be culturally relevant to specific audiences, according to research from Magna commissioned by SXM Media. “Diverse audiences respond to representation in advertising, and they react more favorably to ads that are ‘blanket’ multicultural and, more so, culture-specific, with these two types of ads well outscoring those created for general population on a range of indicators,” said Magna Managing Director of Intelligence Solutions Kara Manatt. “As long as the spots ring true and do not fall to stereotypes, brands that create advertising for specific, diverse communities will reap positive outcomes across favorability, preference and relevance.”
As the streaming landscape continues to shift, new research from Hub found 57% of respondents would rather watch ads and pay $4-$5 less for a streaming service. Asked to choose between three hypothetical TV services, viewers who are given the option to choose a platform with tiered service – some with ads, some without – do so nearly 2x as often as those shown a platform that only offers “limited ads.” Thirty-five percent of current Disney+ subscribers and 24% of current Netflix subscribers anticipate switching their subscription tier when the new ad-supported options become available. And among viewers who are not currently subscribers, 22% of both Disney+ and Netflix non-subscribers think they’ll sign up for an ad-supported tier.
Fortnite creator Epic Games has agreed to pay record amounts in two settlements with the Federal Trade Commission. Epic will fork over $275 million for violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, and is on the hook for $245 million to refund customers for its billing practices. “No developer creates a game with the intention of ending up here,” said Epic. “The video game industry is a place of fast-moving innovation, where player expectations are high and new ideas are paramount. Statutes written decades ago don’t specify how gaming ecosystems should operate. The laws have not changed, but their application has evolved and long-standing industry practices are no longer enough. We accepted this agreement because we want Epic to be at the forefront of consumer protection and provide the best experience for our players.”
Elon Musk polled Twitter users on whether he should step down as head of the social media platform – and 57.5% of the 17.5 million responses were “yes.” While Musk said, ahead of the vote, that he did not have a replacement in mind – “No one wants the job who can actually keep Twitter alive,” he tweeted – others put themselves in the running, including Snoop Dogg. In less than 24 hours after the rapper posted his own poll, 81% of users voted for him to take the CEO seat.

STREAMING
How are OTT platforms and streaming services shaping audience tastes around the world? That’s a question Parrot Analytics aims to answer in a collaboration with the University of Chicago’s departments of East Asian Languages and Civilizations and Cinema and Media Studies, Duke University’s department of English and McGill University’s department of English. The initial case study will focus on “Squid Game.” “What kinds of shows achieve cross-regional success? What is the relation of these shows to local production and consumption markets? What can more fine-grained analysis of demand signals tell us about these larger dynamics?” asked Professor Richard Jean So from McGill University. “For all of these questions, we need Parrot Analytics’ robust global audience demand data to understand how new distribution platforms are influencing taste and consumption patterns.”
“Planet Hunting with the James Webb Space Telescope” was MagellanTV’s best performing title of 2022. The runner-up? True crime title “Lady Killers with Martina Cole.” They’re not outliers – demand for space science and true crime content on the platform has prompted recent launches for FAST channels Space Science Now and True Crime Now.
Live-streaming audio service TuneIn and Calm Radio, a music streaming alternative that offers the best easy-listening, wellness, sleep, classical and jazz music, announced a renewed partnership that will include instream advertising along with premium commercial-free content options.
