|Slime is reloading for CBS Sports and Nickelodeon’s coverage of the NFL’s Super Wild Card Weekend game on Jan. 16, at 4:30p. The company’s revealed talent for the showcase, with Nate Burleson, play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle and Nick star Gabrielle Nevaeh Green reprising their roles in the booth, while Nick star Young Dylan makes his sideline reporting debut. The NFL Wild Card Game on Nickelodeon will showcase kid-focused content and Nick-themed elements throughout, including a special halftime presentation, guest reporters, original on-field graphics, virtual filters, and more for kids and families and will air alongside CBS Sports’ coverage of the game

The USFL reached a multi-year agreement with NBC Sports to carry the new league’s regular and postseason games beginning in April 2022. NBC Sports joins FOX Sports as the league’s official broadcast partners set to carry all 43 contests with NBC Sports offering 21 USFL games in 2022 on NBC (8), USA Network (9), and Peacock (4), while FOX Sports will carry 22 games split between FOX (12) and FS1 (10). “We’re excited to partner with the USFL and FOX Sports to present this new era of professional football,” said Pete Bevacqua, Chairman, NBC Sports. “With our multiple platforms across broadcast, cable, and streaming, football fans throughout the country will be able to experience the USFL’s opening season this spring.”
On the ratings front, this week’s Warriors/Knicks game on TNT, a matchup that saw Stephen Curry break the all-time NBA three-point record, averaged 2.4 million viewers for the network. TNT, ABC and ESPN are now averaging 1.59 million viewers for the season, up 18% from 2020-21 and up 10% form 2019-20.
ESPN’s Monday Night Football Week 14 matchup between the Rams and the Cardinals this week delivered 15.9 million viewers to the combo of ESPN, ABC, and ESPN Deportes to represent MNF’s best audience since the season opener this season. The franchise is averaging 13,389,000 viewers season-to-date, up 11% from 2020 and 6% from 2019.
Univision TUDN’s coverage of the UEFA Champions League delivered the top-rated Group Stage round of all-time, UEFA Champions League Group Stage averaged 429,000 Total Viewers 2+ across Univision and UNIMAS (22 total matches), for a rise f 23% increase over 2020 and the third straight year that the round delivered growth.
The 2022 Discover NHL Winter Classic at Target Field will feature a special performance by country music artist Thomas Rhett. The first intermission presented by Ticketmaster performance will be televised as part of the NHL Winter Classic national broadcast on TNT in the U.S. and on Sportsnet, CBC and TVA Sports in Canada on January 1, at 7p.
In talent news, INDYCAR driver James Hinchcliffe is leaving life in the fast lane to join NBC Sports as a full-time analyst for its coverage of the upcoming 2022 NTT INDYCAR Series. Hinchcliffe will join play-by-play voice Leigh Diffey and analyst Townsend Bell to comprise NBC Sports’ lead INDYCAR commentary team for the 2022 season. Hinchcliffe will also serve as an analyst for select IMSA races. Hinchcliffe will make his 2022 INDYCAR on-air debut at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Feb. 27, on NBC.
Keegan-Michael Key will return to the stage as host of NFL Honors Presented By Invisalign, on Feb 10 from the YouTube Theater at Hollywood Park in Los Angeles. The primetime awards special will run live at 9p on ABC and simulcast on ESPN+ and NFL Network.
Meanwhile, ESPN reached a contract extension with analyst and lead studio host LaChina Robinson, who will continue her role on the network’s WNBA events, while adding NBA duties to her repertoire. Robinson’s first assignment under her new deal is this weekend’s WNBA Draft Lottery. The 2022 Draft Lottery special will air live on ESPN at 3p on Sunday.
NFL Network locked in its broadcast team for the network’s coverage of the inaugural HBCU Legacy Bowl on Feb. 19 at 4p. Steve Wyche (play-by-play), Charles Davis (game analyst) and Bucky Brooks (field analyst) will be on the call for live coverage from Yulman Stadium in New Orleans. The HBCU Legacy Bowl, presented by the Black College Football Hall of Fame, is a postseason all-star game showcasing the best NFL draft-eligible football players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
