NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke is planning to step down next year, according to multiple reports. His contract expires in August. Jeff Shell, Chairman of NBCUniversal Film and Entertainment, is the frontrunner to succeed Burke, who was named CEO in 2011. Revenue nearly doubled, to $35.9 billion by 2018, under Burke’s watch.  
 
Nielsen has a new metric that combines data from its People Meter Panel with automatic content recognition data . Amobee will be the first demand-side platform to use the cross-screen demos. “Nothing beats the ROI of TV for mass audience reach and driving brand awareness. But as consumers increasingly use video on demand and other streaming services, the industry has struggled to keep up with the fragmentation,” said Philip Smolin, chief strategy officer at Amobee. “Amobee, combined with Nielsen’s trusted, standard TV audiences, are bridging the gap between CTV and linear TV.”
 
ABC canceled summer series Reef Break after one 13-episode season. Poppy Montgomery (Without a Trace) was star and executive producer of the crime drama, which averaged 2.85 million viewers in Live+3 Nielsens and an 0.4 rating among A18-49.
 
The December 19 Democratic presidential candidate debate could be derailed by a labor dispute . All seven candidates who qualified for the event – Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer, Elizabeth Warren and Andrew Yang – said they would not cross the picket lines of a service workers union seeking a new contract. PBS NewsHour and Politico are co-hosting the debate, slated to take place at LA’s Loyola Marymount University, where Unite Here Local 11 workers have been picketing since November.
 
Speaking of unions, the editorial staff of NBC News Digital voted to join the NewsGuild of New York . We look forward to getting to the bargaining table with our members, and we expect NBC management to work with us in good faith to secure a strong contract for this talented newsroom,” said Susan DeCarava, president-elect of organization.
 
Hallmark Channel drew fire first for running commercials featuring a same-sex couple kissing, then for pulling the ad. Last week, conservative group One Million Moms started a petition urging the net to reconsider airing commercials from wedding website Zola that included same-sex couples. After Hallmark obliged, #BoycottHallmarkChannel started trending on Twitter . “The debate surrounding these commercials on all sides was distracting from the purpose of our network, which is to provide entertainment value,” said Hallmark parent Crown Media Family Networks in a statement.
 
Fuse and NTWRK, the youth culture e-commerce and content platform, launched an e-commerce revenue-sharing , cross-promotional and advertising partnership. The companies will offer viewers of Fuse’s original linear and digital content a first look at NTWRK’s exclusive product launches, which will then become available for purchase on the NTWRK app; revenue will be split between the two companies. Fuse and NTWRK will also be going out to market with joint sponsorship opportunities to third parties.
 
Boingo Wireless laid off 80 people on Friday , or 16% of its workforce, as part of a realignment that prioritizes growth areas over its legacy businesses like retail Wi-Fi and advertising. “While this difficult step was a necessary one, it will not impact our strategy of continuing to acquire key strategic venues to monetize with our carrier services technologies. We remain committed to investing in the core areas of our business,” said a company spokesperson.
 
Local TV core advertising (which excludes political advertising) could dip 3.4% in the next 18 months , according to Moody’s Investors Service, as audiences shift their media consumption to OTT services, “and advertisers and agencies reallocate their budgets to digital media.” The report says total advertising should account for slightly more than half of TV stations’ revenue.

Amazon Prime Video premieres Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer on Friday, January 31. The five-part docuseries reframes the infamous serial killer’s crimes from a female perspective and includes interviews with Bundy’s longtime girlfriend Elizabeth Kendall and her daughter Molly.

The rising cost of CPMs on Facebook is a concern for 85% of marketers , according to a survey commissioned by LiveIntent, with 13% extremely concerned about it. Forty-two percent of marketers reported spending more in 2019 than 2018, largely due to the increase in cost of advertising on Facebook. If costs continue to rise, almost half (47%) of marketers believe they could be priced out of paid Facebook advertising. “Facebook is a necessity for any brand looking to grow its business, right alongside search,” said Kerel Cooper, SVP Global Marketing at LiveIntent. “But there is a growing discontent due to the steady rising costs of advertising on the platform. The benefits of Facebook advertising – reaching a logged-in audience with highly targeted and measurable campaigns – aren’t limited to just Facebook. In order to compete in an era with rising Facebook costs, marketers must diversify their ad spend and turn elsewhere to reach new and incremental audiences and inventory.”
 
Google has created ADT-3 , a new Android TV device that will let developers test Android 10 implementations before rolling them out to the public. The device is a pre-certified TV dongle with a quad-core A53, 2GB of DDR3 memory and a 4Kp60 HDR HDMI 2.1 output, that Google designed with new updates and security patches. ADT-3 should be available for purchase through an Android TV OEM partner in the coming months.
 
Hulu launched a new ad experience that will be less disruptive during binge watching. The service, which is run by Disney, is testing out a new feature that will recognize binge watching behaviors and then reward viewers with either their third consecutive episode ad-free or with a special offer from a brand.  
 
TVSquared and NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations partnered to offer local advertisers TV attribution solutions , marking the largest linear and OTT attribution rollout for local broadcast advertisers. All 42 NBC and Telemundo owned stations and nine RSNs can now provide advertisers, in every market covered by the stations and RSNs, with a same-day view of how their linear and digital TV campaigns are directly impacting business outcomes.

To give retailers and brands a guide for getting holiday ads right,
consumer insights platform DISQO uncovered the trends behind ad relevance in a new study. Among the highlights:
  • 51% feel happy when seeing a relevant ad
  • 46% strongly agree that they want to see ads relevant to them 
  • Only 6% say the ads they see are relevant to them
  • 35% feel indifferent when seeing an irrelevant ad
“This study illustrates that while people are happier when they are exposed to a relevant ad, they have a hard time articulating what precisely constitutes relevance,” Carl Van Ostrand, VP of Consumer Insights at DISQO, tells Cynopsis. “As marketers strive to create content that is interesting, it’s important to pay attention to both attitudinal and behavioral signals so that they can hone in on what works.”

Segments of TBS’s Full Frontal with Samantha Bee filmed amid the protests in Hong Kong will air Wednesday, December 18 at 10:30p. “There was a huge march the day we left of hundreds of thousands of people – I’m sure it was in celebration of us being there and not people being excited we were leaving,” said Bee.
 
The Simpsons Plus+Size Holiday Marathon will run on FXX starting at 8p on December 17, precisely 30 years to the date and time of the series premiere on Fox in 1989. The stunt feature 661 episodes from the first 30 seasons in their original sequence, including The Simpsons Movie, as well as the animated short The Longest Daycare, airing for the first time in syndication at 11:30a on Dec. 28. At the conclusion of the marathon at 4:30p on December 31, FXX will air a “Best of the Marathon” marathon, including the 11 greatest The Simpsons episodes as determined by the series’ creators and viewer usage on FX Networks’ former Simpsons World on-demand portal.
 
Former The Voice coach Jennifer Hudson returns to the show, along with recording artists Black Eyed Peas, Luke Combs, Lady Antebellum, Dua Lipa and Season 16 winner Maelyn, to perform on the live two-hour season finale on Tuesday, December 17 at 9p.
 
The CW’s Greatest Holiday Commercials Countdown 2019 airs tonight at 9p. What to expect? “The vault of great holiday commercials, from funny to heartfelt, continues to grow. Some of the best creative is being produced outside the US. For this year’s special, hosts Kevin Frazier and Keltie Knight are counting down the 12 greatest holiday commercials from around the world,” Robert Horowitz, Juma President, and Executive Producer, tells Cynopsis. “But when the countdown reaches the final 2 commercials, viewers at home will decide the winner using Twitter.”
