Elon Musk restored the X account of Alex Jones, the right wing extremist on the hook for over $1 billion for saying the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax. On Saturday, Musk posted a poll on his account asking if Jones should be reinstated. About 70% of nearly two million respondents voted “yes.” Sunday morning, Musk posted, “The people have spoken and so it shall be.” Twitter had permanently banned Jones and other accounts linked to his Infowars website in 2018.

Viewership for the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI topped 93 million in its first 24 hours on the Rockstar Games YouTube channel, the most ever for a non-music video premiere on the platform. IAB Tech Lab unveiled its new Advanced TV Initiative, aimed at bridging the gap between traditional linear TV, digital video, and live streaming. Initially, the primary focus is implementing a creative ID framework and conducting a dedicated workshop. This registered creative ID – overseen by organizations managing metadata and access controls – will outline the integration process for all supply chain members. MetaBroadcast, a UK metadata management specialist, and Gracenote, a Nielsen company, announced that it has been awarded a three year contract renewal by Barb, the UK audience measurement service, to operate its combined content ID and genre allocation system from January 2025. MetaBroadcast will now use Gracenote schedule metadata and unique content identifiers to reduce timescales for accurate program identification, validation, enrichment and genre classification, as well as improve coverage and accuracy of broadcaster IDs.

EU lawmakers reached a provisional deal on rules governing the use of AI. Models such as ChatGPT and general purpose AI systems will have to comply with transparency obligations before they are put on the market, including drawing up technical documentation, complying with EU copyright law and disseminating detailed summaries about the content used for training. Among prohibitions, governments can only use real-time biometric surveillance in public spaces in cases of victims of certain crimes, prevention of genuine, present, or foreseeable threats, such as terrorist attacks, and searches for people suspected of the most serious crimes. In addition, consumers would have the right to launch complaints, with significant fines for violations. “We have a deal, but at what cost?” asked Cecelia Bonefield-Dahl, Director General at business group DigitalEurope. “We fully supported a risk-based approach based on the uses of AI, not the technology itself, but the last-minute attempt to regulate foundation models has turned this on its head.”
Elon Musk’s AI start-up, X.AI, has raised nearly $135 million from four investors, and has filed with the SEC to raise up to $1 billion in an equity offering. Musk announced the start-up in July. Last month, Musk said investors in X would own 25% of X.AI.

Meta rolled out a new generative AI experience on the web dubbed Imagine with Meta AI. Users are able to create images by describing them in natural language. Powered by Meta’s Emu image-generation model, Imagine with Meta AI creates high-resolution images from text prompts.

Consumers are feeling the pinch of more expensive streaming, according to Hub’s semi-annual “Battle Royale” survey, which found 88% of entertainment consumers agree with the statement that streaming video subscriptions are raising their prices more than in the past, and 77% said budget is a main reason for not adding new ones. Three-quarters of respondents said it’s too hard to keep track of where to find the shows they want to watch, and 81% reported that there’s a limit to how many subscriptions they can actually use, even if they could afford to have them all.
