12/09/19: Cynopsis Media Tech Update

Monday, December 9, 2019
The Federal Trade Commission ordered Cambridge Analytica
, now in bankruptcy, to delete the personal information it illegally collected from up to 87 million Facebook users. The data was harvested from Global Science Research’s Alexsandr Kogan through his 2014 personality quiz app, “thisisyourdigitallife.” The FTC said Cambridge deceived users because the app promised not to download identifiable information, and misrepresented that it participated in a privacy agreement between the US and Europe.

In more Facebook news, the company is suing
Hong Kong’s ILikeAd Media and two Chinese residents for violating an anti-hacking law by allegedly tricking internet users into installing malware that took over Facebook accounts, then serving ads from those accounts – which were charged for the ads. Facebook said it has already issued refunds to people who were charged for ads in the scheme, which allegedly began in 2016.

Programmatic video platform Tremor Video renewed its partnership with Alphonso
to expand its exclusive automatic content recognition solutions. “We’re continuously looking for ways to adapt to the ever-evolving digital landscape, while also improving performance for our clients,” said Anthony Flaccavento, CRO at Tremor Video. “We have grown through our recent acquisition of RhythmOne, and now through this evolving partnership, we will be able to offer exclusive solutions for advertisers looking to succeed with TV retargeting.”

Mobile ad network Ogury said it raised a $50 million
investment round led by Idinvest Partners, for total funding of $92 million. Ogury provides a consent management platform, a plus amid concerns swirl about Europe’s GDPR, and the clock ticking on the compliance deadline for California’s Consumer Privacy.

Verizon Media and Serena Williams are joining forces
this holiday season to present Everybody, Every Body, a shoppable video series that will feature Williams’ S by Serena collection. Videos will feature clickable content that enables seamless purchasing.

YouTube is taking a new approach
with this year’s YT Rewind mashup video, offering a montage of big moments and milestones from around the world on YouTube rather than its traditional offering of highly produced original video segments. According to Variety, the move follows the 2018 YouTube Rewind scoring as the most-disliked video ever in the platform’s history.

PewDiePie is YouTube’s is most-viewed creator of 2019
, year-to-date, with more than 4 billion views, according to the platform. Also known by his real name of Felix Kjellberg, he’s also the most-subscribed individual YT creator, with 102 million followers. YouTube released the top 10 most-viewed creators ranking as part of its year-in-review compilations.

Amazon Alexa will release its first interactive audio series
, Tala’s World, which comprises seven episodes and invites listeners to solve a crime by collecting clues and interviewing suspects.

Grupo Globo and Pixellot announced a partnership to ramp up AI-Automated production in Brazil
, expanding the right-holder’s coverage of sports leagues and competitions. The investment in Pixellot and installation of its AI-Automated production systems at stadiums, facilities and sports complexes is aimed at offering fans more live and on-demand matches and events across multiple screens and distributions platforms owned or operated by Globo.

People-based marketing platform LiveIntent announced new data around Black Friday and Cyber Monday
ad performance for 2019. Over the holiday weekend, LiveIntent’s data found that phones saw the most traffic (no surprise), but tablets had the best conversion rates, with a 25% higher click-through-rate and 9% higher conversion rate. However, phones saw the most number of clicks at 3x higher and conversions at 2x higher.

Facebook is testing a photo transfer tool that allows users to port their photos
directly to Google’s photo storage service through encrypted transfer. The photo portability feature, based on code developed via the Data Transfer Project, is being offered in Ireland, home of the company’s international HQ, with worldwide availability expected in the first half of 2020.

Amazon is extending its automatic speech recognition service
, Amazon Transcribe, to medical speech with Amazon Transcribe Medical. Physicians will now be able to dictate their clinical notes and see their speech converted to accurate text in real-time, without human intervention. Clinicians can use natural speech and do not have to explicitly call out punctuation like “comma” or “full stop”; text can then be automatically fed to downstream applications such as EHR systems, or to AWS language services.

Octopus Interactive, the networks of interactive screens inside Uber and Lyft cars
, has joined OOH organization DPAA. Octopus is one of the only DOOH platforms that offers sight, sound, motion to a captive audience,” said Barry Frey, President and CEO of DPAA. “More importantly, their screens are interactive.”

Insights and consulting company Kantar expanded its portfolio of research solutions
available via Kantar Marketplace with the launch of Express Surveys in the US. Express Surveys allows researchers to select from over a thousand profiling attributes, and get answers in hours or minutes. “We live in a complex, fast-changing world with more communications, channels, products and competition than ever before,” said Marc Ryan, Chief Data Officer. “The pace of marketing means you can’t afford to wait days for insights and answers.”

STREAMING

Peloton is partnering with Amazon to launch a streaming TV app on Amazon Fire TV devices
and smart TVs. Pelaton’s 1.6 million subscribers will have access to a variety of fitness content that can be controlled through the Fire TV remote and Alexa voice commands. Existing Pelaton subscribers can access the app for free; it will cost newcomers $12.99/month after a 30-day trial. The move comes amid backlash for a holiday ad for Pelaton’s exercise bike that many considered sexist.
“While we’re disappointed in how some have misinterpreted this commercial, we are encouraged by – and grateful for – the outpouring of support we’ve received from those who understand what we were trying to communicate,” said the company in a statement.

The BBC’s streaming service, iPlayer, had 3.55B program requests in 2019
through the end of October, up 10% from the same period in 2018. The BBC’s Director of Content Charlotte Moore broke the news, crediting the addition of shows including RuPaul’s Drag Race – renewed for a second season – for the “extraordinary” bump.

Rockbot, creator of the smart music platform for businesses, has launched Rockbot TV
, a multi-channel streaming TV platform designed for businesses. “Millions of consumers watch TV out of home each year. Nielsen estimates that 11% of sports viewership alone takes place out of the home (OOH),” said Garrett Dodge, CEO of Rockbot. “Rockbot TV is the first OTT platform targeting this $4B industry.”

New and existing streaming video services will account for multiple billions of dollars
in domestic advertising spending by the time they are all operating at scale, according to ad agency GroupM’s latest US forecast. Total spending on advertising in the US is expected to rise 6.2 percent in 2019. Digital advertising will propel larger growth than initially projected for the overall ad market for the remainder of 2019 and 2020, the report notes, with digital ads representing a 50 percent share of advertising with 20 percent growth for 2019 and 15 percent growth for 2020. Digital companies including Alphabet, Amazon, Booking.com, eBay, Facebook, IAC, Netflix and Uber are significantly contributing to the overall double-digit growth for advertising and are likely to spend more than $30 billion on advertising this year, GroupM estimates.

Netflix and YouTube will remain the No. 1 and 2 most-watched video platforms
next year, but with competitors lining up their relative share of time spent viewing will dip starting in 2020. According to new research from eMarketer, new services including Disney+, HBO Max and Apple TV+ will erode the dominance of Netflix and YouTube in the coming years.

There’ll be no more forced ad breaks for all cloud DVR recordings of YouTube’s live TV
streaming service. YT announced via Twitter that consumers can now fast-forward through ad breaks on recorded shows from CBS, the Smithsonian Channel and POP TV; the CBS family of networks was the last hold-out for forced breaks.

At least 40% of pay-TV subscribers are “at risk” of cutting the cord
, according to new data from MoffettNathanson. The 60% of customers who regularly watch sports are least likely to leave, but as cable companies move towards profitable subscribers, and push OTT products to their customer base, “c
ord cutting becomes ever easier,” said analyst Michael Nathanson, adding, “This could add further pressure to the pay TV ecosystem and keep the rate of cord cutting elevated in 2020.”

ADVERTISING

The Network Advertising Initiative issued new guidance for its privacy code,
calling for ad tech companies that belong to the organization to obtain consumers’ opt-in consent before collecting or using sensitive data for ad delivery and reporting, as well as for ad targeting. The rules apply when companies receive precise location data, then segment the data so it becomes imprecise.

US digital ad costs will rise 2.8% in 2020, down from 3% this year
, while the price for traditional media will grow by 5.2%, versus 4.7% last year, according to the World Federation of Advertisers’ Outlook 2020 report.
