NBCUniversal and Walmart are embarking on “the next iteration of livestream shopping” with the launch of a shopping show, “LivE! Deals for the Holiday Season.” Hosted by E! News’ Erin Lim Rhodes and Francesca Amiker on E! Online on Thursday, December 8, the interactive half-hour episode will enable viewers to ask questions about products in real time. “Viewers will be entertained by the content, inspired to interact with Walmart’s products, and delighted by the seamless purchasing experience, ultimately deepening the connection between consumers and brands,” said Evan Moore, SVP, Commerce Partnerships, NBCUniversal Advertising & Partnerships.

The number of paid Peacock paid subscribers tops 18 million, up from the 15 million reported at the end of 3Q22, announced NBCU CEO Jeff Shell at the UBS media conference. Shell also said he doesn’t anticipate NBCU going through the kind of reorganization and layoffs being experienced by other media companies, having completed its own restructuring in 2020, but the current reshuffling could result in “some attractive assets” becoming available.

Fox Corp. CFO Steven Tomsic was also at the UBS event, and had an answer for investors questioning Fox’s possible re-merging of Fox and News Corp. The companies were split in 2013, and the idea of reuniting them has raised questions about the combined value of the entities, as well as possible legal exposure. Creating value for shareholders “will be at the forefront of everyone’s mind” as special committees weigh the possibility of a merger, said Tomsic.

Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes have been temporarily taken off the air at ABC’s “GMA3,” following tabloid reports of an off-screen relationship. ABC News President Kim Godwin told staffers on a call Monday that while the affair is not a violation of company policy, the chatter about it had become too much of an “internal and external distraction.” While the network will hold meetings to decide how to handle the situation, it’s not all bad news – ratings jumped about 20% from two weeks before the news broke, to the day after.

ADVERTISING

Economic conditions will mean a slowdown, but ad sales will still grow, according to forecasts from GroupM, Magna and Zenith. Global ad spend in 2022 is projected to grow by 6.5% in 2022, versus an estimate of 8.4% in June, said GroupM, and grow 5.9% in 2023, down from a prior projection of 6.4%. Citing a “deteriorating macroeconomic outlook,” Magna lowered its expectations of growth in 2023 to 5%, versus 7% this year. Zenith predicts 4.5% growth for 2022, down from a previous estimate of 7.3%. In the US, Magna expects financial services companies and consumer products manufacturers to spend less on advertising in 2023, while spending by entertainment companies, travel and betting companies will grow.

Ad investment in national linear TV in October dipped by 8% year-over-year, but the month had the highest investment in linear TV compared to the rest of 2022 to date, according to Standard Media Index. Other findings include:
· Upfront demand is flat, and scatter sharply fell: The Upfront / Scatter split reached an unprecedented 80% / 10% of monthly National TV ad dollars in October 2022.
· Sports has been a market stabilizer: Although the genre receded 10% YoY, investment levels remain 7% above pre-pandemic 2019 ad spend.
· Cable is stable: Cable had single-digit declines compared to Broadcast and Syndication. Within Cable Sports, NFL yielded the main influx of dollars with Soccer, NBA, and Racing also performing well.
· Pharma, General Business and Travel spend was up, while tech and financial was down: Pharma, Gen Biz and Travel increased their presence across all TV genres for the and have also expanded YoY for three consecutive months. However, Tech and Financial Services pulled back sharply.

Out of home advertising revenue increased 11% in 3Q22 compared to the previous year, accounting for $1.94 billion, based on figures released by the Out of Home Advertising Association of America. Digital OOH continues to power overall OOH growth as the segment jumped 14% compared to the year prior. For 2022 year-to-date, OOH is up 25.7% and comparable with the historical YTD high set in 2019 at $6.4 billion. “Key sectors are increasingly investing more dollars – in particular, political spending in out of home hit record highs,” said Anna Bager, President and CEO, OAAA. “It confirms OOH’s ability to effectively reach audiences at national and local levels and is surely a harbinger of more momentum to come.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The History Channel and best-selling author and historian Simon Sebag Montefiore are teaming to develop a project based on Montefiore’s The World: A Family History. If greenlit, the series will be produced by Karga Seven Pictures and would look at world history through the lens of family dynasties like the Borgias, the Tudors, the Romanovs, the Khans and more. “When I started writing The World: A Family History, I dreamed of making an epic series that would catch its ambition,” said Montefiore. “From the start, The History Channel loved the idea and embraced my vision with enthusiasm.”

wiip has optioned The Lemon, the debut novel from S.E. Boyd, a pseudonym created by authors Alessandra Lusardi, Kevin Alexander and Joe Keohane. The culinary-focused title will be developed as a TV series with the authors adapting their own work. wiip’s Paul Lee, Mark Roybal and Nate Winslow will executive produce alongside Lusardi, Alexander and Keohane.

MGM+ announced new casting for the second season of its historical drama series, “Domina.” New series regulars include Joelle (“The School for Good and Evil”), David Avery (“Doctor Who”), and Benjamin Isaac (“Holmes & Watson”), who is replacing Enzo Cilenti in the role of Tiberius.

Independent British producer Richard Johns (“Shadow of a Vampire”) has established indie Argo Films, with the goals of producing TV projects with established and high-profile creative talent, and finding and nurturing the next generation of new voices. Already in development are scripted TV projects including a soon-to-be-announced drama; a limited series about family and identity, based on real events; and an original dramedy series from screenwriter Daniel Hayes (“Vs.”).

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Season two of “Married to Real Estate” premieres Thursday, January 12 at 9p on HGTV. For starters, hosts Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson convince a couple to snatch up a property that needs a massive overhaul to create a livable open concept.

The sweet 16 season of Lifetime’s “Married at First Sight” premieres on January 4 at 8p. Ten Nashville, Tennessee based singles will marry a total stranger, then have 23 episodes to determine whether to get a divorce.

Wednesday, December 7 is a big premiere day for TV5MONDEplus. On the way are new series “Téléclub,” “Les maitres du café,” “Sur la routes des vins du nord” and “Les hôtels historiques de Suisse,” along with the season 9 premiere of “Les 100 lieux qu’il faut voir.”

Outdoor Channel docuseries Life on the Edge,” chronicling the lives of homesteaders and American entrepreneurs as they live off the grid in the Aleutian Islands, launches in September 2023.

marblemedia and broadcast partners BYUtv (US) and TVOkids (Canada) announced their premiere dates for season 5 of “All-Round Champion.” The season kicks off on BYUtv on Sunday, January 15 at 5p, followed by TVOkids on Wednesday, February 8 at 5p.

Also headed to BYUtv is season 3 of “The Chosen,” streaming on the BYUtv app and BYUtv.org starting Sunday, December 11 at 10p.

Season seven of soap opera “The Bay” launches December 19 at 3p on Popstar! TV. The serial is produced by LANY Entertainment in association with SheMogal Media and is distributed exclusively internationally by GRB Entertainment.

COMING UP

“A Nashville Country Christmas,” starring Tanya Tucker, Ana Ortiz and Keith Carradine, will be simulcast on Paramount Network and CMT on Monday, December 12 at 8p. CMT is also offering a Christmas episode of its “Campfire Sessions” series on Wednesday, December 21 at 10p.

Starting at 12p on December 24 and airing through Monday, December 26 at 6a, Decades will present “A Christmas Carol” of a different kind – back-to-back episodes of “Carol Burnett and Friends.” Guests include Betty White, Rock Hudson, Tim Conway, Sammy Davis Jr., Cher, Dick Van Dyke, Maggie Smith, and more.

Shudder and IFC Midnight are giving a theatrical run to paranormal thriller “Skinamarink” beginning Friday, January 13, ahead of the film’s streaming debut on Shudder. The horror film became a bit of a viral sensation after its premiere at Fantasia Fest.

STREAMING

While Disney+ had lower churn than total streaming in 3Q22, one in four subscribers could trade down to the streamer’s AVOD offering (launching Thursday), according to an analysis by Kantar’s Entertainment on Demand service. Other findings include:
· As stacking grew, the proportion of new subscribers who were stacking in Q3 also grew. Disney+ over-indexes in stacked users.
· Disney+ had 8% share of screentime among AVOD streamers in 3Q22.
· Original content, new releases and variety of classics have become important Disney sign up drivers, while being ad-free remains a strength.
· Disney+ is still winning on new release films, variety of classics and children’s content.
· The ease of search, interface and value for money have become key pain points for Disney+ subscribers.
· Overall, SVOD is declining, driven by SVOD only streamers. Growth is coming from streamers who have some combination of SVOD and FAST/AVOD.

“Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” has joined a rarified club, passing one billion hours viewed on Netflix in its first 60 days. “Squid Game” and “Stranger Things 4” are the only other series to make the cut.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

The FIFA World Cup Round of 16 concludes today, December 6 with a doubleheader on FOX featuring Spain and Morocco looking to secure their spot in the quarterfinals, before Portugal square off against Switzerland. Ian Darke and Landon Donovan will call Spain vs. Morocco at 10a with Rodolfo Landeros on the sidelines, while John Strong and lead match analyst Stu Holden will call the Portugal vs. Switzerland at 2p.

Speaking of FIFA, the Argentina vs. Poland match last week delivered 3.485 million viewers to Fox, up 61% from the same stage in 2018. Japan vs. Spain drew 2.624 million viewers, up 21%. Across the pond, England’s victory over Senegal drew nearly 20 million viewers on ITV, for the most-viewed match of the tournament so far in the UK.

Canon is the first company to advertise in the Brooklyn Nets’ Netaverse, a 3D rendering of Nets games. The Netaverse is currently used for replays during game TV broadcasts and on the video boards at Barclays Center. The technology consists of more than 100 specialized data-capture cameras surrounding the court placed at various points throughout venue.

Martial arts org ONE Championship will make its US on-ground debut on Friday, May 5 at the 1stbank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. The card will be headlined by the World Championship trilogy bout between MMA legend and ONE Flyweight World Champion Demetrious Johnson and Adriano Moraes.

Banijay Rights announced sales of “Rogue Heroes.” The first season has been picked up by Wing Sight Culture & Media Co for streaming in China and STARZPLAY in the Middle East, while TVNZ in New Zealand, Paramount+ in Germany, and DIRECTV in Latin America have all acquired the series.

Abacus Media Rights has sold feature documentarySavage Waters to CANAL+ in France, and Outside in the US.
