Good morning. It’s Friday, January 17, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Olympics entered a deal with Facebook, which includes Instagram, that will see the two brands team up for the upcoming XXII Olympic Winter Games from Sochi. The deal will see the companies work on ways to “leverage the broadcast and unique NBC Olympics content on Facebook to drive conversation about the Sochi Games and NBC’s coverage across the world’s largest social media platform.” In addition, for the first time, NBC Olympics will premiere feature video content on Facebook, beginning with the story of how J.R. Celski, America’s top short track speed skater, came to know Seattle rapper Macklemore. Fans on Facebook will also be able to ask questions directly to NBC Olympics commentator and Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes during NBC’s primetime coverage of 11 nights of figure skating performances.

ON THIS DAY in 1916: The PGA is formed.

In The Know: Herschel Walker was an Olympian in what sport?(Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Answer to Our Last Sports Trivia Question: A regulation golf ball has how many dimples? Answer: A tricky, slippery slope here. The standard textbook answer is 336, but since there is no official “regulation” on a designated number and it ranges (300-500) based on the manufacturer, I’m going to open up the gallery and dodge this bullet.
