Good morning. It’s Friday, January 17, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Olympics entered a deal with Facebook, which includes Instagram, that will see the two brands team up for the upcoming XXII Olympic Winter Games from Sochi. The deal will see the companies work on ways to “leverage the broadcast and unique NBC Olympics content on Facebook to drive conversation about the Sochi Games and NBC’s coverage across the world’s largest social media platform.” In addition, for the first time, NBC Olympics will premiere feature video content on Facebook, beginning with the story of how J.R. Celski, America’s top short track speed skater, came to know Seattle rapper Macklemore. Fans on Facebook will also be able to ask questions directly to NBC Olympics commentator and Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes during NBC’s primetime coverage of 11 nights of figure skating performances.

ON THE AIR

In addition to yesterday’s news on expanded instant replay, Major League Baseball has reportedly given its approval to the Dodgers to launch the team-branded SportsNet LA channel. The LA Times writes that the new television home is set to debut on Feb. 25, with the channel set to carry all of the team’s spring training games as well as every regular-season game, with the exception of the national games selected for national Fox or ESPN broadcasts. The cost of SportsNet LA is expected to be about $5 per month, per subscriber.

Action sports personality Brandon Graham and Pro Snowboarder Louie Vito will make their hosting debuts at X Games Aspen 2014, later this month. The duo will host all 16 hours of coverage on ESPN and ABC, joining a lineup of talent who will provide analysis and play-by-play for every competition. Graham previously joined the X Games telecast team in 2012 as the play-by-play voice of the men’s and women’s Skateboard Street competitions while Vito is a current X Games competitor, past Olympian and Sochi hopeful. Other talent is set to include: Keir Dillon, Zach Crist, Brandon Graham, Mike Douglas, Chris Ernst, Chris Burandt, Tes Sewell, Alyssa Roenigk, Jamie Little and Jordan Whitley.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber said that the league is looking to make an announcement about a new Miami Franchise (backed by David Beckham) sometime in early February, according to reports. “I was down there this past weekend, and I’ve been down there a lot, working with potential ownership and trying to finalize a stadium plan,” Garber told media at the MLS SuperDraft.

HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel returns for its 20th season on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 10p. Segments will include: a look at marijuana and the NFL; Boomer Esiason and the story behind his work battling cystic fibrosis; and a look at the new owner of the Sacramento Kings.

International broadcaster Supersport nabbed the right to carry the 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games in South Africa as well as 43 other Sub-Saharan nations on the continent, the International Olympic Committee said on Thursday. Reuters reports that territories include Nigeria, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Tanzania.

David Feherty is set to deliver two live shows for Golf Channel with performances of Feherty Live set to be shot on consecutive nights in front of studio audiences at Universal Studios Orlando. The programs will air live on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 9p from the annual PGA Merchandise Show. Guests include Lee Trevino, Graeme McDowell and Lou Holtz on Tuesday, with Greg Norman, James Patterson and Mike Eruzione on Wed.

SiriusXM will off a special radio documentary chronicling the history of NFL Championship games played in New York leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII. The program, Deep Freeze: A History of NFL Championship Games in New York, is hosted by SiriusXM’s Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, and will debut Tuesday, January 21 on Mad Dog Sports Radio (channel 86), SiriusXM NFL Radio (channel 88) and SiriusXM Sports Zone (channel 92) multiple times.

If you are just starting out in the Television Industry or are looking to quickly expand your skills for your burgeoning TV career, then you won’t want to miss Cynopsis Media’s One-Day Boot Camp at the Yale Club in New York City.

Questions: Pete Romas |Sponsorship: Mike Farina.

ON THIS DAY in 1916: The PGA is formed.

In The Know: Herschel Walker was an Olympian in what sport?(Email Chris-Sports@cynopsis.com with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)

Answer to Our Last Sports Trivia Question: A regulation golf ball has how many dimples? Answer: A tricky, slippery slope here. The standard textbook answer is 336, but since there is no official “regulation” on a designated number and it ranges (300-500) based on the manufacturer, I’m going to open up the gallery and dodge this bullet.
