NBCUniversal News Group announced a partnership and investment in the social media news video startup NowThis News. The two companies will co-produce original short-form news videos out of NowThis News’s New York City studio, to be distributed across mobile and social platforms. NowThis News hired Sean Mills, the former President of The Onion, as its new President and Ashish Patel, former Global Head of Social Media for VICE, as its VP of Social Media. NowThis News was one of the first adapters of Instagram Video.
YouTube is teaming with the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah next week to create online and on-site festival destinations. First, the site is hosting YouTube on Main Street, where visitors can attend panels, screenings, film receptions and social events from Jan 16-25. The streaming site will broadcast a daily hour-long talk show, Live @ Sundance, on the Sundance Film Festival’s YouTube Channel, and is a sponsor of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Short Film Program; some of the videos will debut on the festival’s YouTube Channel during the event, and the YouTube Audience Award will go to one of the 15 competing films.
Tech company Gilbarco Veeder-Root acquired Outcast Media’s national video network, which distributes video at gas pumps. Outcast’s network reaches 36 million viewers, according to Nielsen.
Multi-platform production studio Vuguru struck a deal with cloud streaming service Flipps to put a few of its original web series on TV for the first time. Flipps users can stream episodes of Vuguru’s Prom Queen and Back on Topps on its app, which is available for Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, LG and Phillips smart TVs and Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Apple TV.
Sony’s Crackle announced at the Television Critics Association press tour that it’s bringing back Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee for a fourth season, and Cleaners for a second go-round. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee will return for six episodes; Cleaners for 12. Crackle previously announced Chosen is on its way back for a six-episode third season.
Vimeo will offer rentals of 13 films from the Toronto International Film Festival exclusively on its Vimeo On Demand. Filmmakers were paid $10,000 to allow Vimeo a window for distribution: 30 days of online exclusivity, or until Vimeo recoups the advance.
Netflix ordered a third season of original series Lilyhammer, featuring The Sopranos’ Steven Van Zandt playing a mob fixer in the Lillehammer, Norway witness protection program. While Lilyhammer doesn’t have the buzz of Netflix cousins House of Cards or Orange Is the New Black, it’s got international appeal. “Lilyhammer is the type of global show that Netflix members around the world have discovered,” said chief content officer Ted Sarandos. The series’ second season was released in December.
Starz‘s soon-to-debut pirate drama Black Sails will air on Machinima‘s online entertainment network a week before its TV premiere; the first episode will be available to Machinima Prime’s 1.38 million YouTube subscribers on Jan. 18. Machinima has been distributing trailers and features ahead of the debut. Starz also has deals with Apple, Amazon.com and Microsoft Xbox, as well as cable and satellite partners, to preview the first episode.
HBO’s Girls launched season three with the first two episodes on Monday, and now fans can stream them for free on YouTube. Socially active Girls has robust Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Vine accounts, and recently added a SnapChat handle to share sneak peeks of new episodes.

AOL Network’s Adap.tv announced an agreement to provide a video ad private marketplace for the Guardian News & Media. “The Guardian is a ‘programmatic pioneer’, having embraced this way of trading for display advertising since its early days,” said Managing Director of Adap.tv Europe’s Brian Fitzpatrick. “As the brand continues to expand its global footprint, making video inventory available programmatically via a private marketplace will provide access to new revenues while maintaining full control of buyers and pricing.”
The Interactive Advertising Bureau and Prosper Insights released a new study showing 21 percent of Americans planning to buy a new car say digital advertising will affect their purchase. The study also found that versus a typical adult, auto buyers are more likely to own a smart phone (75 percent versus 54 percent), more likely to stream video (69 percent versus 56 percent) and more likely to watch digital video commercials before streaming programming (66 percent versus 53 percent). The data comes from 6,200 car shoppers and almost 20,000 regular consumers surveyed over several months last year.

Lay’s social media video campaign and Do Us a Flavor contest is launching its second year on Jan. 14, with Whose Line Is It Anyway? comedian Wayne Brady creating comedy sketches of consumers’ flavor submissions. Last year, the contest recorded 3.8 million chip flavor submissions and 1.4 million votes on Facebook and Twitter.

Apple released a beautifully shot and poetic ad yesterday for its iPad Air tablet. The ad depicts footage from around the world of people using their iPad to capture some of life’s wonders. Audio for the 90-second spot is one of Robin Williams’s memorable speeches from the 1989 film, Dead Poets Society.
