The Consumer Electronics Association and the National Association of Television Programs Executives (NATPE) released research on Friday showing that while 42 percent of respondents had synced a second-screen app to live TV, only 13 percent said the app made the viewing experience “much more enjoyable.” The majority of users judged using synchronized content “somewhat more enjoyable.” Said NATPE president and CEO Rod Perth, “The findings of this study present new information, challenges and significant opportunities for content producers and advertisers.” Research was conducted by E-Poll Market Research with 2,531 U.S. consumers between Oct. 13-28 in 2013.
TiVo broke a record at CES this year – the Guiness World Record, for most hours binge-watching television. Three men (Chris Laughlin, Dan Jordan, and Spencer Larson) watched 87 straight hours of TV on the TiVo Roamio device from Monday night to Friday morning, snatching the Guiness title from two Californians who spent 86 hours glued to The Simpsons in 2012.

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed on Friday to hear the case of Aereo versus TV broadcasters. NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX hope to stop Aereo from streaming over-the-air TV signals to its subscribers for a monthly fee, claiming it amounts to copyright infringement. Aereo CEO Chet Kanojia said in a statement that the company has “every confidence” the court will rule in its favor. The broadcasters see things differently. Fox issued a statement on behalf of several nets declaring,“We are confident the court will recognize that this has never been about stifling new video distribution technologies, but has always been about stopping a copyright violator who redistributes television programming without permission or compensation.” No court date has been set.
YouTube launched its Winter Olympics hub on the Team USA channel in partnership with the U.S. Olympics Committee. Before the opening of the Games in Sochi, Russia on Feb. 6, the channel will offer profiles of competing athletes.
Dreamworks Animation and YouTube announced they’re co-creating a daily program for the video streaming site that’s expected to debut before the end of this month. The new series, to be called YouTube Nation, will offer daily highlights of content trending on the site.
