Under a new content distribution deal with German SVOD Pantaflix, Disney Germany will make the studio’s films available to streaming customers in Germany and Austria. The arrangement covers Disney films from Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars, including availability of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on the video-on-demand platform at the same time as the DVD launch. At the outset, the content will be available beginning in the first quarter of 2018 only in Germany and Austria. According to Pantaflix, other territories and more deals with major studios will follow.
Meredith’s proposed acquisition of Time Inc. for $1.85 billion would make the combined company number six among digital media properties in the U.S., according to comScore. “That’s a digital business much larger than many standalone activities that trade at very high multiples in the marketplace,” noted Steve Lacy, Meredith’s chairman and CEO, on an analysts’ call Monday. Of the ad revenue from the two companies for the year ending September 30, 34% came from digital platforms.
Amid the never-ending flood of digital content aimed at niche audiences, there is bound to be consolidation. Female-focused publisher LittleThings is hoping to get ahead of this particular curve by exploring a range of options that include a possible sale, The Wall Street Journal reports. By taking on a strategic investor or joining a bigger media company, LittleThings would hope to grow its business by tapping into a larger advertising sales force or achieving greater scale through distribution across their network, a company spokesman explained.
Tumblr founder David Karp is leaving Verizon’s Oath. “My decision comes after months of reflection on my personal ambitions, and at no cost to my hopefulness for Tumbr’s future or the impact I know it can have,” wrote Karp in an email to staff on Monday. Karp founded the blogging service 10 years ago, and it was acquired by Yahoo for $1.1 billion in 2013. With the acquisition of Yahoo by Verizon this year, Tumblr landed at Verizon’s Oath.
LET’S MAKE A DEAL
Ten-month-old news publishing startup Axios has raised $20 million to fund an expansion of its newsroom staff. Launched by Politico co-founder Jim VandeHei, Axios’ latest round was co-led by venture capital firms Greycroft Partners, e.ventures and Lerer Hippeau Ventures. In addition, backers from last year’s round, including NBCUniversal, increased their investment in Axios.
Augmented reality game maker Niantic Inc. (Pokemon Go) has raised about $200 million a few weeks after the company disclosed plans to release a new title called Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Pokemon Go reached $1 billion in revenue globally within about six months of its release last July – faster than any other mobile game, including Activision Blizzard Inc.’s Candy Crush Saga, according to App Annie Inc.
PROGRAMMING
The colorful characters from the Emmy Award-winning Ask the StoryBots are returning to Netflix on Dec. 1 with an all-new holiday special. Based on the hit digital children’s educational brand from JibJab Bros. Studios, A StoryBots Christmas stars Judy Greer as the voice of Beep and includes a special appearance by the legendary Ed Asner as Santa Claus.
Hulu’s first deal with StudioCanal will give the streaming pioneer U.S. SVOD rights to three European series: Below the Surface (Scandinavia), Midnight Sun (French/Swedish) and Trust Me (U.K).
On Dec. 22, Amazon will premiere all six episodes of the original dramatic series The Last Post on Prime Video in the U.S. From the highly acclaimed BAFTA award winner Peter Moffat (The Night Of), The Last Post is set during the social and political unrest of the mid-sixties, in the simmering heat of Aden, Yemen, and centers on the lives of a unit of Royal Military Police officers and their families.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Snapchat has launched image recognition for photo filters. The update recognizes what is being snapped and adds a relevant border or sticker in categories like concerts, food and pets. Earlier this year, Google announced a feature that adds image recognition to its mobile assistant.
MEASURING UP
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
All Series (11/20/17 – 11/26/17)
Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.
