IN THE NEWS

President Trump made his cable news preference clear again in a Saturday tweet, saying Fox News “is MUCH more important in the United States than CNN, but outside the U.S., CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our nation to the world VERY poorly.” Fired back the news net, “It’s not CNN’s job to represent the U.S. to the world. That’s yours. Our job is the report the news. #FactsFirst.”

Norm Eisen, White House ethics lawyer under President Obama, noted in a tweet of his own that the POTUS post “smacks of collusion,” coming as it did on the day Russian president Vladimir Putin ruled foreign media outlets working in Russia must be listed as foreign agents. Eisen also suggested the CNN dig could be used as an exhibit against Trump in the Department of Justice’s attempt to block AT&T’s merger with CNN owner Time Warner

Seth Meyers has been confirmed as host of the 75th Golden Globes Awards ceremony, airing January 7 on NBC. This isn’t new territory for Meyers, who hosted the 2014 Primetime Emmys, as well as the ESPYS in 2010 and the 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner. Meyers shared even happier news on Friday’s Late Night, with his family as guests: he and his wife are expecting their second baby boy.

Jeff Glor will start as anchor of CBS Evening News on Monday, December 4. He takes over for interim anchor Anthony Mason, who replaced Scott Pelley, now full-time at 60 Minutes. Glor has been at CBS News for 10 years.

Someone was working on Thanksgiving. At close to midnight on Thursday, CBS Corp. released a statement saying the company had reached a multi-year agreement with Dish Network for carriage of CBS owned stations, Pop, Smithsonian Channel and CBS Sports Network. The deal, which CBS Corp. president, television networks distribution Ray Hopkins said achieved “short and long-term economic and strategic goals,” ended what had become a war of words and three-day blackout that affected customers in 26 states. According to the American Television Alliance, which represents cable and satellite TV providers, there have been 212 blackouts on pay-T systems this year, more than double the number in 2016.

Law & Order: SVU is prepping a shades-of-Harvey Weinstein episode, reports Entertainment Weekly. However, instead of a Hollywood setting, the NBC action will focus on the airline business. “It’s a real important episode about the rape culture in an industry, and we wanted to try to stretch the law to criminalize that sort of environment,” exec producer Michael Chernuchin told EW, adding that the show had been in the works before the Weinstein scandal erupted. “We were beating the story out and said, ‘Wow, this is exactly what the actresses go through’….So we got all of our Harvey stuff out with airline pilots.”

It appears there will be no shortage of material for similarly-themed episodes. LAPD police chief Charlie Beck told the LA Times there are 28 open sex crime cases under active investigation involving people in Hollywood and the media – and he expects “even more high profile sex crime reports in the coming months and week and months.” 37 additional sex crime reports have been filed in other jurisdictions.

Meanwhile, the journalism schools at Arizona State and University of Kansas rescinded awards given to Charlie Rose, who has been accused of sexual harassment during his tenure at PBS’s Charlie Rose and CBS This Morning. Rose, who apologized for inappropriate behavior, was cut loose from both shows.

MSNBC’s Morning Joe took heat on social media over the long weekend for a pre-taped show on Friday in which Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist talked about a turkey dinner that wouldn’t have happened yet (“Whoo! I’m stuffed,” said Brzezinski). “There was no intention to trick viewers,” an MSNBC exec told the Washington Post, which first reported on the episode. Scarborough tweeted his surprise that it wasn’t obvious to all that the hosts’ over-the-top remarks – like Brzezinski saying she’d forgotten to remove the bag of guts from the turkey, which was still “a little frozen” when she served it – were a joke. “We’ve been making fun of the practice for years,” said Scarborough.

HBO EVP of media and talent Nancy Lesser is suing the Television Academy and the city of LA over a spill she took at the 2016 Emmy Awards. Lesser, who claims that exits at the Microsoft Theater were inadequate, took an 8-month leave to recover from a fall that caused a fractured pelvis, among other injuries.

New technology offers networks and advertisers the chance to engage with fans in exciting – and promising – ways. “Fans are hungry for more content and more ways to experience their favorite shows and movies in a similar fashion to the way sports fan behave,” Autumn Nazarian, Mindshare North America’s SVP, Spotlight Lead, told Cynopis Digital. “As we know, some of these franchises, like Star Wars or Stephen King stories, span generations….If done authentically, brand-supported extensions and experiences of these creative properties can give fans another avenue for entering and enjoying the media multiverse, whether that’s in digital, TV, film, streaming, experiential activations, and beyond.”

Artificial Intelligence is one emerging technology that gives fans a new way to engage more deeply with content, but you’ll need to understand what it can do – and how to incorporate it into programming efforts – for maximum impact. Panelists from Mindshare North America, IBM Watson Advertising and Scripps Networks Interactive will be on hand with insights and case studies for the December 6 webinar, Using Artificial Intelligence to Capture & Captivate Audiences. You can register here.

For the first time, 2 celebrity finalists will join the Dancing With the Stars winter tour, “Dancing With the Stars: Live! – Light Up the Night.” Season 25 champ Jordan Fisher (Grease: Live!) and runner-up, actor Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle), will hold onto their dancing shoes for the tour.

The cast and crew of House of Cards was informed that  Media Rights Capital  is working with Netflix with the hope of resuming production on the sixth and final season “soon.” A letter from SVP of television business and legal affairs Pauline Micelli expressed appreciation for everyone’s patience, and said the crew will be paid for an additional 2-week hiatus ending December 8. MRC suspended series star Kevin Spacey over allegations of sexual harassment earlier this month, and Netflix said it wouldn’t work with Spacey – which means if and when Cards returns, the plot will be seriously reshuffled.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE
Use Artificial Intelligence to Find the Biggest Possible Audience

AI can customize viewing experiences in a way that makes pay TV more valuable to consumers; it can help you reach potential consumers with increasingly precise ad targeting, and it can help you reach content consumers on A.I. driven platforms, such as smart speakers. We think it’s high time the industry starts really utilizing this new tool. That’s why we’re hosting the Wednesday, December 6 webinar,  Using Artificial Intelligence to Capture & Captivate Audiences.

DIGITAL DATA

Last week, YouTube terminated over 50 channels and yanked thousands of videos it considered predatory or not family-friendly. On the company’s blog, VP of product management Johanna Wright explained the move comes as the result of “a growing trend around content on YouTube that attempts to pass as family-friendly, but clearly is not.” Advertisers including Mars candy and Mondelez, maker of Oreos, had reportedly pulled advertising following complaints about unsuitable content.

Amazon’s livestream of the 2018 Rose Parade will be hosted by “parade legends” Cord Hosenback and Tish Cattigan, who looked an awful lot like Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon when they made the announcement. Funny or Die coverage streams on Amazon Prime Video on Monday, January 1 at 11a.
