CYNOPSISDIGITAL
11.18.16 Good morning. It’s Friday November 18, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Submission Lead Time. The IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) defines Submission Lead Time as the number of business days prior to a digital ad campaign going live in which a publisher needs to validate advertiser submitted creative(s) for a campaign.
Warner Bros. has inked an agreement to acquire the gaming-centric digital media company Machinima. Warner Bros., already a major investor in Machinima, plans to fold the company into Warner Bros. Digital Networks, its development unit for digital and video productions. The acquisition reportedly values Machinima at just under $100 million.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple is planning to cut down on how much it charges to sell video services via the App Store. The goal, according to Bloomberg, is to “appease” the partners who populate the App Store with TV and movie services. The company will reportedly cut its revenue share from subscription video streaming apps from 30 percent to 15 percent. Non-video apps, meanwhile, would see the same reduction – but only after a customer has completed a full year’s subscription. Apple hasn’t officially confirmed the report, and there’s no word yet on when exactly the changes might be implemented.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE

IBM’s The Weather Company has announced a new ad solution. The feature enables advertisers to create branded, full-screen animated background ads for The Weather Channel app. The ads are based on the current weather conditions at a user’s location, with branded backgrounds changing to mimic elements of the local weather. Walt Disney Animation Studios will be the first marketer to make use of the new ad format, according to The Weather Company. Disney will use the ads to promote the upcoming animated film Moana.
PlayStation Vue, Sony’s over-the-top live TV service, is now available for Apple TV. (The new app only works for fourth generation set-top boxes.) The service was already available via Roku devices, Google Chromecast, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire tablets, iOS and Android devices, and, naturally, PlayStation 3 and 4 consoles. Now’s as good a time as ever for PlayStation Vue to expand to a new platform; the service is about to face some fierce competition from DirecTV Now, AT&T’s rival service, which is slated to launch in late November.
One final shout-out to the endlessly talented winners (and runners-up!) from our Model D Awards, which honored the movers and shakers in the digital media industry. “We are honored to receive the distinction of Best Digital Television Group,” said Evan M. Silverman, SVP of Digital Media of A+E Networks. “Cynopsis holds a special place in our hearts as we look to them to learn about industry news. Thank you to Cynopsis for this honor and for keeping us informed.” And indeed we’ll continue to keep you all informed. As for the Model D Awards: See you all next year.

Are digital media players a major threat to pay-TV? Maybe less so than some of us thought, if GfK’s latest study is accurate. The market research firm finds that 29% of consumers who own a Google Chromecast, Apple TV, or Roku player use their devices as a “replacement for regular broadcasts.” That’s actually a decrease from two years ago, when the number was 40%. Meanwhile, 58% said they use their digital media players in addition to pay TV. In 2014, the number was 45%. The study finds that only 13% of digital media player owners take steps to eliminate their pay-TV services altogether, a 4% decline from 2014. And the study finds that 64% of digital media player owners have a minimum of one device that’s connected to a TV that also uses a traditional pay-TV service. The study, which interviewed 804 respondents, was conducted from September 13-26.
Discovery Communications championed VR early and enthusiastically, launching its Discovery VR division last August. Not surprisingly, the company is now installing a VR expert in a major role. Rebecca Howard, a VR consultant and formerly The New York Times’ video chief, will serve as Discovery’s SVP of Emerging Platforms and Partnerships. In her new role, Howard will oversee Discovery VR’s brand portfolio. She’ll also oversee new partnerships in collaboration with Discovery’s U.S. networks, as well as new social media initiatives.
The marketing strategy and innovation firm Giant Spoon has made two hires. Sammi Han will serve as Social Strategist, working on the agency’s HP account. And David Jacobsen will serve as Senior Strategist, focusing on Giant Spoon’s GE account. Han, who will work out of the agency’s L.A. office, initially joined the company in August as a Community Manager. Jacobsen, who will work out of Giant Spoon’s New York office, joins the agency from Grey Group, where he served for two years as a Senior Account Executive and Producer.
After it aired on the U.K.’s Channel 4 for two seasons, which British anthology series was commissioned by Netflix for a third season? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.)
Our Last Trivia Question: Hulu seems to have a thing for actors named Hugh. In fact, two of them feature prominently in Hulu original series that debuted this year. What are their names, and what shows do they star in? Answer: Hugh Dancy (The Path) and Hugh Laurie (Chance). Kudos to Andy Pittman-TAMU/TX, Louis Lewow-Lewow media Group/GA, Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg M and S Entertainment, Inc./CA, David Westberg-SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union/CA, and Anjali Desai-Departure Films/NY

Spotlight Stories, Google’s series of 360-degree video shorts, is out with its newest entry. Called Rain or Shine, it was developed by Google’s Advanced Technologies and Projects unit in partnership with Nexus Studios. The short centers on a young girl whose beloved new sunglasses cause one very unfortunate side effect. Rain or Shine is perhaps the most interactive Spotlight Story to date, with numerous little pieces of narrative tucked away in different parts of its 360-degree universe. The short is optimized for mobile (and Google Cardboard), but you can also watch it on desktop. Check it out here.
See you on Monday,
David Teich
