IN THE NEWS

Veteran Washington journalist Gwen Ifill died November 14 of cancer. She was 61. Ifill, who moderated vice presidential debates in 2004 and 2008, as well as a Democratic debate between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders this year, was moderator and managing editor of PBS’s Washington Week and longtime host of  PBS NewsHour. Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS, credited Ifill with being “a fundamental reason public media is considered a trusted window on the world.” Among the tweets that poured forth yesterday was this from NBC’s Chuck Todd: “I’m sorry I can’t thank Gwen one more time for always being there for advice and encouragement. She was one of a kind.”

CBS added six episodes to comedies The Great Indoors and Man With a Plan, which join Bull, Kevin Can Wait and MacGyver as the net’s freshman with full season orders. CBS also added 3 episodes to its order for sophomore medical drama Code Black. Indoors is averaging 8.67 million viewers and 1.9/7 among A18-49, while Plan is grabbing 6.96 million viewers and 1.5/5 in the demo.

HBO renewed Sunday series Westworld, Divorce and Insecure for 10-episode second seasons. Westworld is averaging a gross audience of 11.7 million viewers, Divorce is attracting 4.4 million and Insecure 3.2 million.

Networks would do well not count on Millennial audiences for sports demos growing, if a survey of 32,000 consumers in the US and Europe by Ampere Analysis is to be believed. In the study, 46 percent of respondents who identified sports as their favorite genre were over 45, versus 11 percent for ages 18-24. The shift in perception of sport among younger consumers should ring alarm bells for traditional media companies reliant on high value – and increasingly high cost – sports rights,” said Richard Broughton, director of Ampere. “Pay TV operators thinking of cutting back spend on TV and movie content to protect budget for sports rights may want to think again.”

NBC, for one, is being proactive on the live sports front. The network enlisted actors in shows like Superstore, The Blacklist and Law & Order: SVU, among others, to appear in promos for its Thursday Night Football, which kicks off this week. NBC Sports CMO Jenny Storms told Variety driving viewership is “a huge company priority.”

HBO nabbed the most nominations for the 22nd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards with 22, followed by ABC and Netflix with 14 and FX with 12. The most nominated series was FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson with 6, followed by HBO’s Game of Thrones, AMC’s The Night Manager and Netflix’s The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt with 5 each. Awards show will be broadcast live on A&E on Sunday, December 11 at 8p. For details, go here.

Cable, direct-broadcast-satellite and telco sectors lost 430,000 video consumers in 3Q16, reports SNL Kagan, bringing the year-to-date drop to 1.3 million, the largest ever for the first nine months of the year. But it wasn’t all bad news. Cable lost 94,000 video subscribers, its best third quarter since 2006, and for the nine months it cut its 2015 decline in half. DBS gained 46,000 subs thanks to AT&T’s shift towards DirecTV from U-verse, which was down 382,000 in the quarter.

On Sunday, Fox’s The Simpsons addressed the fact that back in 2000, an episode predicted that Donald Trump would be president. In this week’s show opener Bart was seen writing on a blackboard, “Being right sucks.”

The 2016 Cinema Spotlight Award, sponsored by The Africa Channel, has a winner: short film See Me Now, about the magical interaction between a hospice worker and a Burmese retired dancer. “Our goal is to encourage and shine a light on relevant and entertaining films for our television audience, audiences in Africa, the Caribbean and the diaspora throughout the world and See Me Now is a film that meets this goal,” said Suzan Jorgensen, director of on air promotion for TAC.

Hallmark Channel and Six Flags Entertainment are partnering over the holiday season to promote Hallmark’s “Countdown to Christmas” event throughout Six Flags theme parks and online channels, with original promotional content, signage and video. Six Flags’ annual “Holiday in the Park” will be promoted by Hallmark, including a segment on lifestyle show Home & Family. The companies also teamed up for a new VR roller coaster, “Santa’s Wild Sleigh Ride,” with riders using Samsung Gear VR powered by Oculus to transform the traditional coaster experience into an immersive sleigh ride.

Charter Communications is facing a lawsuit in San Diego for deceptive surcharges, part of “a massive illegal scheme of falsely advertising and promising its cable television service plans for much lower prices than it actually charges,” claims the suite. Last month a similar suit, in San Francisco, was filed against Comcast, complaining of tacked-on charges.
