11.13.14

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 13, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Randy Jackson won’t be back for season 14 of American Idol. The music producer and original judge on the Fox singing competition first announced he was exiting after season 12, but returned as a mentor. This time, it appears, it’s for real. “After 13 seasons, I felt now was the perfect time to leave,” said Jackson. “I’m proud to have been a part of a series that discovered some incredible artists and will go down in history as one of the most successful television shows ever…Onto what’s next.” Jackson’s exit leaves host Ryan Seacrest the sole original survivor of Idol, returning in January.

IN THE NEWS

Did Discovery bite off more than it can chew with Eaten Alive, a special featuring snake researcher Paul Rosolie being swallowed by a Giant Green Anaconda? Not if they wanted to grab attention for the special, kicking off the net’s “Mega Week,” Sunday, December 7 at 9p. While a Change.Org petition to boycott the special was making headlines, Discovery issued a release (subject line: “Hey, you might have heard we have a show about a snake…”) that explained rainforest advocate Rosolie was wearing a custom-built suit during his adventure in gastronomy to protect snake as well as snack. And – spoiler alert – both emerged “healthy and alive.”

Two weeks after Fox snipped its order from 16 to 13 episodes, Mulaney is moving from 9:30p on Sundays to 7:30p, trading timeslots with animated Bob’s Burgers. The freshman comedy earned a .9 rating among A18-49 on Sunday, up from a series low .7.

NBCUniversal and boy band One Direction struck a cross-platform deal that includes One Direction: The TV Special on Tuesday, December 23 at 8p, as well as a live performance on Today and Telemundo’s Un Neuvo Dia on November 17 timed to the release of their new album, competitions for fans to win tickets to shows and social media action.

With a $10 million endowment gift, Participant Media founder Jeff Skoll helped launch the new Skoll Center for Social Impact Entertainment at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, dedicated to promoting social change through entertainment and performing arts. “I founded Participant Media in the belief that a story well-told has the power to ignite positive social change,” said Skoll. “This new center at UCLA TFT is an extension of that vision, with the goal of empowering a new generation.”

Former E! and Current TV reporter Laura Ling has joined Discovery Digital Networks as Director of Development. “Throughout my career, I have sought out the stories that haven’t been told and the people the world hasn’t met, and I am excited to join the Discovery Digital Networks team to help bring more of these stories to light online,” said Ling. In 2009 the journalist, sister of CNN’s Lisa Ling, was imprisoned in North Korea for five months after trying to film refugees at the Chinese border.
