Good morning. It’s Friday November 11, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Contextual Advertising: Contextual advertising is a form of targeted advertising for ads appearing on websites or other digital media. Contextual ads are selected and served by automated systems based on the content displayed or the identity of the user.

TOP NEWS

Yikes. According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, some Yahoo employees knew about the company’s massive data breach as far back as 2014, when it first occurred. The breach exposed information about roughly 500 million user accounts; Yahoo only acknowledged it in September. According to the SEC filing, Yahoo is now looking into “the scope of knowledge within the company in 2014.” Yahoo believes that a “state-sponsored actor” was responsible for the breach. Verizon has agreed to buy Yahoo for $4.83 billion, but there’s still no word as to whether news of the data breach will affect the telco’s valuation of the company.

You can finally buy a pair of Spectacles, Snapchat’s new hardware for recording and uploading video…but only if you find yourself near Venice Beach, California. Snapchat parent Snap Inc. has placed a single vending machine near its headquarters. The machine, which is bright yellow with smiling features, looks kind of like a “Despicable Me” minion. The company intends to launch other Spectacles vending machines throughout the U.S. in the coming weeks, and even created a map to let customers see where new ones have popped up.  Each set of Spectacles costs $129.99. But the hardware is already popping up on eBay, selling for as much as $950.

Adobe Systems has reached a deal to buy TubeMogul, a provider of programmatic video advertising software for brands and agencies. The deal is worth $540 million, net of cash and debt. The TubeMogul acquisition will create “the first end-to-end independent advertising and data management solution” that spans across digital platforms and TV, said Adobe in a statement.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL MODEL D AWARDS

It’s been a very good seven days for TubeMogul. Last week at the posh Apella event space in New York City, the ad tech company collected a top prize at the Cynopsis Digital Model D Awards. “We are honored that our cross-screen planning software won the Cynopsis Digital Model D Award for ‘Best Video Ad Platform,’” said Director of Special Operations Ian Monaghan.  “Judging from the caliber of the other winners, we are in good company and appreciate the recognition given Cynopsis’ influence and reach in the media community.” Speaking of other winners, Adobe – the company that’s acquiring TubeMogul – also took home a Model D award.

PLATFORMS + DEVICES

In a new Financial Times report, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom confirmed that the Facebook-owned company is looking to add live-streaming capabilities. “Live is really exciting for us,” he said. “I think it can enhance what we’re doing.” Reports say that Instagram has already begun testing live-streaming features with a select number of users.

Instagram is also out with some new features for Stories, its version of Snapchat’s Stories feature. The new features enable users to include mentions and links. (While support for links is available only to verified users, the mentions feature is open to the public.) Instagram Stories is also adding support for Boomerang, a video app initially launched last year. Boomerang lets users create looping clips, similar to GIFs.

FUNDRAISING + INVESTORS

VidAngel, the $1-per-movie streaming service that’s currently being sued for copyright infringement by Hollywood studios, seems to have gotten a major cash boost. VidAngel says that it’s raised $10.1 million by selling shares to its supporters. The company is calling it a “mini-IPO.”

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS

Verizon’s Go90 is rolling out a new series. The ad-supported mobile video service will debut Thanksgiving, a new half-hour scripted comedy from director/co-creator Daniel Powell (Inside Amy Schumer). The series stars Bridey Elliott, actor/comedian Chris Elliott (who happens to be Bridey Elliott’s real father), and comic actress Amy Sedaris. The eight-episode series will stream from November 16-November 23, with a new episode released daily. The show hails from Seriously.TV, a digital comedy channel from Complex Networks.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

AltspaceVR has a new trick up its sleeve. The “social VR” startup, which specializes in facilitating interactions between real people in virtual spaces, has unveiled a new feature. VR Capture enables users to record and replay “live” VR events, such as music and comedy shows. The new feature debuted in a demonstration last night. “VR Capture is an important breakthrough for the development and growth of VR as a medium,” said AltspaceVR CEO Eric Romo. AltspaceVR’s backers include Comcast and Tencent.

RESEARCH

Netflix viewership has increased a lot over the years (duh). Now we may have a clearer idea of just how much. In 2011, for example, subscribers watched about 51 minutes of Netflix daily, or 310 hours per year. Now, according to a CordCutting.com estimate, that daily number is on track to reach about 600 hours by the end of 2016. That’s a full 12 extra days worth of annual streaming as compared to five years ago.

TRIVIA

One early Facebook exec only had his “co-founder” title permanently affirmed after a lawsuit. Which one? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.)

NBCUniversal, Fox Entertainment Group, and Disney-ABC Television Group each own a stake in Hulu. Back in August, a fourth company bought a smaller stake. Which company was it? Answer: Turner Broadcasting (Time Warner) bought 10% of Hulu. The other three Hulu parents own 30%. Kudos to Martha Girard-PBS/VA, Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg M and S Entertainment, Inc./CA,  David Westber-SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union/CA, Andy Pittman-TAMU/TX, Toby Spinks-NBCUniversal/NY, Faye Kulik-Fox Networks Group/NY, and Matt Zagha-A+E Networks/CA
