11/10/17: Disney plans streaming shows based on Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar properties

CynopsisDigital
Good morning. It’s Friday November 10, 2017 and this is your your first early morning Digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Autonomous: Any artificial intelligence construct that doesn’t need help from humans is said to be autonomous. For instance, the term could be used of a driverless car that doesn’t need pedals, a steering wheel, or human passengers in order to operate at full capacity.

JUST IN…

Disney announced that it has finalized a deal with Rian Johnson, director of the upcoming Star Wars installment The Last Jedi, to develop a new Star Wars trilogy. Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger made the announcement during the company’s quarterly earnings call. But here’s where things get even more interesting: The company is also planning to develop a new live-action Star Wars TV series, which will run on the company’s upcoming streaming service. (That service is slated to launch by the end of 2019.) The company is also working on new Marvel-based series, as well as series adaptions of Pixar’s Monsters Inc. and Disney Channel’s High School Musical. Disney sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry in August, when it announced that it would end its licensing agreement with Netflix and launch its own SVOD services. And at the moment, it’s sure looking like the Mouse House is destined to become Netflix’s biggest competitor.

Twitter has temporarily put a halt to verifying new users. The company, like other social media platforms, grants certain accounts – those of celebrities, journalists and other well-known figures – a little blue checkmark signaling that the account is genuine. But a controversy recently erupted when the company verified the account of Jason Kessler, a prominent white nationalist. “Verification was meant to authenticate identity & voice but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance,” the company acknowledged in a tweet. Twitter says it will issue no new verifications until it “resolve[s]” the issue. It’s still unclear what that resolution will look like, or how long it will take the company to arrive at it.

PROGRAMMING

Machinima, a digital entertainment property largely geared toward gamers, now has its own linear-style channel on the Amazon-owned Twitch platform. Machinima is a division of Warner Bros. Digital Networks; it was wholly acquired by Warner Bros. about a year ago. The new channel, which is ad-supported and runs 24 hours a day, features content focused on gaming, fandom, and animation. To start, the programming will derive mostly from Machinima’s existing originals, including videos from Mega Man Dies at the End and Body Count Fighting. The channel will also broadcast two hours of live programming each weekday, with shows such as VR Power Hour and the geek-oriented talk show Spacebar.

APPS + PLATFORMS

A Hulu app is now available for Nintendo Switch. Subscribers to the service will be able to stream both the live TV and VOD-only plans through the game system, which has sold about 2.6 million units in the U.S. since its release nine months ago. The Nintendo Switch can be used as a mobile device, or connected directly to a TV.

Apple has made a new update to Clips, its app for Snapchat-style animated selfies. Among the new features for Clips 2.0 is “Selfie Scenes,” a tool that lets users place themselves within a variety of animated, 360-degree environments. Two of those scenes come from the upcoming film Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which premieres in December. There’s also a new “style-transfer” feature, which lets users transform photos and videos into art-style renderings, such as watercolors or oil paintings. Clips 2.0 also features a redesigned interface, which makes the app’s most commonly-used controls more accessible. There’s one big catch: The new app update is only available for the iPhone X, which starts at $1,000 and is still facing limited availability.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

Niantic Labs, the developer best known for Pokémon Go, has another big augmented reality game in the words. The company announced that it’s working on Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, a new AR game. WB Games San Francisco, a division of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is collaborating on the new project. (The game will be published through Portkey Games, a recently launched WB label.) Not too many details are known about the game just yet – though as you might have guessed based on its title, we do know that it’ll be based on J.K. Rowling’s book series. The game will likely place users within the Harry Potter universe, overlaying the books’ magical environments onto real-world surroundings through users’ phones. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is slated to roll out next year.

LET’S MAKE A DEAL

Roku has acquired Dynastrom, a Danish startup focused on multi-room audio. The deal serves as a strong indicator that Roku may be working on a smart speaker product to compete with the Amazon Echo and Google Home. Roku paid $3.5 million for the company. Roku hasn’t commented on the acquisition; it was disclosed in a regulatory filing, which was discovered by Variety.

AUDIO + MUSIC STREAMING

Turner-owned movie streaming service FilmStruck has launched its own podcast. Simply called The FilmStruck Podcast, the show is helmed by FilmStruck host Alicia Malone. The podcast features interviews with filmmakers and cinephiles, along with discussions of films in the FilmStruck library. The first episode debuted yesterday; the podcast will run biweekly.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Univision CommunicationsGizmodo Media Group has a new Head of Video. The role goes to Ben Reininga, who previously served as Vocativ’s Editor-in-Chief. Gizmodo Media Group, which consists of six media properties, originated from Univision’s 2016 acquisition of the bankrupt Gawker Media. Historically, the sites – which include Gizmodo, Deadspin, and Jezebel – have not placed a huge focus on video. Reininga’s hire strongly signals that this will change – though GMG insists that that it is not implementing a “pivot to video” at the expense of editorial content. Reininga will report to Susie Banikarim, GMG’s Editorial Director. Banikarim, who joined GMG in August, has worked with Reininga in the past: Her time as Vocativ’s Chief Content Officer overlapped with Reininga’s tenure as Editor-in-Chief.
