With Formula 1 in tow, Liberty Media is exploring a new direct-to-consumer streaming service for the racing brand as it looks to finalize its acquisition of the organization for $4.4 billion. Liberty executives discussed the potential platform during a third-quarter earnings call with analysts. Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei stated that the company eas excited about launching the platform, noting that it “makes a lot of sense.”
Brian Rolapp, NFL Media EVP and NFL Network President and CEO, addressed the league’s ratings woes at the NAB Show New York conference, telling attendees that the league is mulling various options to fix the damage including switching out commercials and tweaking the game itself, per B&C. “If we don’t keep an open mind about preserving some flexibility, any measure of success you have can go away pretty quickly,” Brian Rolapp, NFL Media executive VP and NFL Network president and CEO, said Wednesday. “We look constantly at improving the rules of the game, the safety of the game and the quality of the game even if that means changing things that some people think are sacred cows.”
Following the election, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that Donald Trump’s election as president shouldn’t slow the sport’s plans to stage more events in Latin America amid the league’s plans to expand international play, which included Tampa Bay playing the Cuban national team in Havana last March. "Haven’t heard anything with respect to the Cuba issue that would suggest that there’s going to be any change, and I think we’re all familiar with things he said about Mexico," Manfred said at the annual general managers meeting, according to the AP. "I think we need to wait and see what actually happens."
Speaking of baseball, MLB Network scored all-time viewership records across several categories in recent weeks, notching its most-watched Postseason, its most-watched October, and what is expected to be its most-watched Q4 ever. The Postseason saw the network mark its best-ever Postseason viewership in both prime time with an average of 219,000 viewers and in total day 87,000 viewers for spikes of 298% and 21% over 2015, respectively. MLB Tonight also had its best Postseason averaging 110,000 viewers per live airing, up 20%. The 2016 Postseason also led to MLB Network’s most-watched October on record, with an average of 232,000 prime time viewers and 91,000 viewers in total day, growing 176% and 8% over 2015, respectively.
In other ratings news, NBA TV announced that its Fan Night coverage is averaging 557,000 viewers through its first two live game telecasts this season. That marks a rise of 52% over last year’s comparable coverage.
With UFC hitting NYC for the first time, UFC President Dana White will sit down for an exclusive Q&A session with an in-studio audience at the SiriusXM Studios today that will as part of SiriusXM’s exclusive “Town Hall” series. The event will be moderated by Jim Rome and run nationwide at 5p on SiriusXM Rush.
WWE is making a talent change on Smackdown, announcing that Tom Phillips will join play-by-play commentators Mauro Ranallo and David Otunga along with color commentator JBL. The four-man booth will run every Tuesday at 8p on USA Network.

St. John’s locked in a six-year extension with IMG to serve as the exclusive multimedia rights holder of Red Storm Athletics. The renewed commitment between St. John’s and IMG will now run through 2026. "St. John’s Athletics and IMG have fostered a successful relationship over the past six years, and we are optimistic that our partnership will continue to grow over the next decade," said St. John’s Interim Athletics Director Kathy Meehan. "We look forward to leveraging IMG’s expertise to expand St. John’s Athletics brand, provide resources for our student-athletes and develop new partnerships that will elevate our national profile." As part of the new deal, IMG will expand its signage opportunities inside Carnesecca Arena with two new endwall LED video boards.
NBA TV is bound for the PlayStation Vue where the channel will join BBC America in the latest lineup. With the new channel in-bound, all Viacom-owned networks including MTV and Comedy Central will move off of the roster starting Friday.
