CYNOPSISDIGITAL
11.10.16 Good morning. It’s Thursday November 10, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Skins: Skins are customized and interchangeable sets of graphics that allow users to continually change the look of their desktops or browsers without changing their functionality or settings. Skins are often used as a marketing tool.
Dish Network seems to be running into some tough market forces. The company lost a net 116,000 pay-TV subs in Q3, according to its latest report. (Dish’s pay TV services include both satellite video and Sling TV, its OTT “virtual MVPD.”) Still, the company managed to increase net income by to $307 million (a 57% increase). But the company’s earnings per share of 64 cents came in short of analysts’ expectations. All of Dish’s subscriber losses came from its satellite services; Sling TV actually gained 204,000 subs in Q3, according to estimates from MoffetNathanson. (That’s as good a clue as any that many of Dish’s satellite subs are fleeing to digital platforms – an industry-wide trend.) But Sling TV will have tougher competition ahead. AT&T’s DirecTV will roll out its own virtual MVPD soon, likely later this month. And both Hulu and Google are planning to follow suit next year.
Viacom’s Q3 news left something to be desired as well: namely, advertising revenue. The company’s Q 3 ad revenue dropped by 8%, both globally and in the U.S. The company’s media networks were down 11% overall. Meanwhile, viewership was down 3% from Q3 of last year. And when zeroing in on key demos, the viewership number is down 5%.

In April of 2015, Pinterest introduced its Marketing Partners program, which extended automated ad buying and posting tools to a select group of companies. Over half of Pinterest’s ad revenue now comes from the program, according to the company, which is now throwing new data measurement vendors into the mix. Companies including Adjust, AppsFlyer, Kochava, Apsalar, and Tune will become available through the marketing program, enabling advertisers to make sure their ads were shown to the intended audience, and to track what kind of impact the ads had. (For instance, the new tools can be used to check whether ads changed a consumers’ perceptions or boosted sales.) In addition, any brands using Moat will be given the ability to measure whether their Pinterest ads were actually seen.
LinkedIn says it will make all of its display ads available programmatically starting next year. Meanwhile, the company is increasing the number of native self-serve ad units available to customers. Advertisers could already buy Sponsored Updates and text ads through LinkedIn’s self-serve campaign manager. But now advertisers will also be able to buy Sponsored InMail units in a self-serve capacity.
LIVE VIDEO
Perhaps not surprisingly, live-streaming usage during the November 8 presidential election shattered some records. Election night was the biggest live-streamed event ever carried by the content delivery network provider Akamai Technologies. Numerous news outlets live-streamed coverage of the election, including CNN Digital, CBS News’s CBSN, and YouTube. CNN Digital says that it recorded its largest-ever global audience, locking in 27.7 million streams on election day. And CBSN also beat its record, drawing 19.1 million streams and 11.1 million unique viewers.
Looks like Netflix is saying goodbye to another licensing deal. Scripps Networks Interactive is putting an end to its distribution pact with Netflix for shows such as HGTV’s House Hunters and Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen. Scripps “made the strategic decision not to extend our SVOD agreement with Netflix past the end of this year,” said Scripps COO Burton Jablin. “In the end, it really is not the kind of dual-revenue model that best monetizes our content over the long term.”

Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming from Nov. 2-8 using Twitter data from Nielsen. (Election-related tweets are excluded from this analysis.) Insights from the 5,071,868 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– 62.8% of people who sent congratulatory tweets were watching the Chicago Cubs battle it out with the Cleveland Indians during the 2016 World Series, which aired on Fox.
– 4.1% of TV watchers who talked about being scared were glued to AMC’s stalwart The Walking Dead.
– 3.8% of viewers who said they were excited about something on TV were watching the 50th Annual CMA Awards on ABC.
– 2.4% of people who were annoyed by something they saw were watching Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood on VH1, with Brandi being one big source of frustration.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
TED, the organization best known for its “talks” and conferences, has landed MTV vet Colin Helms to serve as Head of Media. Helms will oversee TED’s operations, strategy, and core media business. That will include social media, design, mobile, and development of new formats. He’ll also be tasked with forging distribution deals in TV and radio, as well as other platforms. Helms served at MTV for over a decade, most recently as SVP of Connected Content. The new hire was first reported by Variety.
Twitter is losing its COO – and gaining a new one. Adam Bain, who has been with the company since 2010, tweeted that he was “ready to change gears and do something new outside the company.” Anthony Noto, previously Twitter’s CFO, will take over as COO effective immediately.
NBCUniversal, Fox Entertainment Group, and Disney-ABC Television Group each own a stake in Hulu. Back in August, a fourth company bought a smaller stake. Which company was it? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.)
Our Last Trivia Question: In the early 1980’s, what was then known as HBO Pictures produced the first original movie for HBO. What was its title? Answer: The Terry Fox Story. Kudos to Andy Pittman-TAMU/TX, Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg-M and S Entertainment, Inc./CA, Louis Lewow-Lewow Media Group/GA, and David Westberg-SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union/CA
