Media Buyer: A media buyer is a professional – usually at an ad agency – who works with a media planner to allocate ad spending across media platforms. For online platforms, a media buyer generally has to request proposals and negotiate the final cost. Programmatic (automated) ad-buying can partially or wholly remove human media-buyers from the process.
 

 
TOP NEWS
 

Back in August, NBCUniversal reached a multi-year deal with Snapchat to release original shows, based on linear NBCU series, on Snapchat. For Snapchat, this comes as part of an initiative geared toward short-form programming, or Snapchat Shows. (Snapchat Shows are separate from both the Live Stories and Discover platforms.) Now NBCU is out with its latest Snapchat Show, an offshoot of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Simply called Fallon, the short-form series debuted yesterday, featuring a four-minute performance from Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake. The series will continue rolling out in the coming months. Episodes remain available for 48 hours after launch. Other NBCU shows released on Snapchat since August include a series based on The Voice, and another based on E! News. A Saturday Night Live spinoff is also expected.

Sizmek, an open ad management company for multiscreen campaigns, announced the launch of its new HTML5 VPAID authoring tool for interactive video. The product is designed to help Sizmek customers develop rich media ad campaigns using programmatic data. The tool doesn’t limit advertisers to strict templates, and is designed to let users create campaigns in a format that can be support across different screens.

OTT + SVOD
 

According a report from the The Verge, Google SVOD service YouTube Red had about 1.5 million paying subs as of late summer. (An additional one million subs were signed up on a free trial basis at that time.) The Verge got the figures from unnamed sources, and it’s not known what the service’s numbers are at the moment. “We’re pleased with momentum behind YouTube Red and we’re seeing healthy growth of members each month,” a YouTube spokesperson told The Verge.
 
Anime Network, a programmer of Japanese anime, announced the launch of its new premium SVOD service. The Anime Network service is available to Comcast customers through Xfinity On Demand.

 
 
VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
 

The NFL is trying its hand at VR. The league says that it’s producing its very first original VR series, set to launch exclusively on YouTube and Google’s Daydream View headset later in November. (The headset drops November 10.) The nine-part series, produced by NFL Films, will explore life in and around the NFL, with a focus on coaches, players, execs, fans, and even cheerleaders. Each episode will run from about five to ten minutes. The first episode will debut on the NFL’s YouTube channel this Thanksgiving, November 24

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 

Yahoo’s got a new Acting Head of Video. The position goes to Alex Wallace, a former longtime exec for NBC News. (Most recently, she served as an SVP in charge of Meet the Press 360, Nightly News 360, and NBC News’s Washington Bureau. She left the news org in July of last year.) At Yahoo, where she started work this week, she’ll work on video efforts across news, sports, finance, and lifestyle. Wallace will be based in NYC, working as part of the media team led by Yahoo SVP and Global Editor-in-Chief Martha Nelson. The Wallace hire was first reported by Politico.
