ABC gave full-season orders to comedies American Housewife and Bless This Mess. “Bless This Mess has quickly become a fan favorite, due in large part to the expert wit of co-creators Lake Bell and Elizabeth Meriwether, and our incredibly talented and charismatic cast,” said Karey Burke, President, ABC Entertainment. Burke added, “Sarah Dunn created something special with hit comedy American Housewife, and the Otto family continues to entertain on a level that is relatable and hilarious.”
AMC renewed Eli Roth’s History of Horror. The show’s six-episode second season will also appear on AMC Networks’ horror streaming service, Shudder. Season 1 reached nearly 6 million viewers on AMC in Nielsen Live+7 ratings.
Kristen Bell closed a deal to return to Gossip Girl, HBO Max’s reimagined version of the pop culture phenomenon. Bell will reprise her role as the series’ narrator in the upcoming version from original series writer and executive producer Joshua Safran, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s Fake Empire, Alloy Entertainment, Warner Bros. TV and CBS Television Studios.
Another day, another new streaming video service? Discovery may soon be launching a service that combines content across its portfolio. During a third quarter earnings call, Discovery CEO David Zaslav said his company is considering a new aggregated streaming service that offers all its content in the US. Discovery already has its TV Everywhere apps and some subscription streaming services operating in the US, but is now discussing a unified streaming service with all its intellectual property.
Nielsen has decided to spin out its global media and global connect businesses into two separate, publicly traded companies. James Attwood, chairman of Nielsen’s board of directors, said separating the businesses will position both for long-term success. Nielsen Global Media houses the company’s metrics and analytics services for media companies and advertisers, while Nielsen Global Connect provides consumer packaged good manufacturers and retailers with data, tools and predictive models for informing business decisions and strategies.
After three years, Cris Carter’s association with Fox Sports over. “Cris Carter is no longer with Fox Sports,” a spokesperson for the Murdoch-owned outlet said on Thursday about the former First Things First co-host and NFL Hall of Famer. “There is no further comment at this time.” There is also no word on who will be replacing Carter on the FS1 morning show.
Bleacher Report reached a multi-year extension with host Adam Lefkoe . As part of the agreement, Lefkoe will expand the scope of his Turner Sports responsibilities to serve as the studio host for NBA on TNT Tuesday night coverage alongside the newly formed team of Candace Parker and Shaquille O’Neal.
GLAAD released its “Where We Are On TV” report , which breaks down overall diversity of primetime scripted series regulars on broadcast networks and assesses the number of LGBTQ character on cable networks and streaming platforms. The report showed that things are at an all-time high when it comes to LGBTQ series regulars, and there was a significant increase in racial diversity of LGBTQ characters on broadcast and cable. However, there was a decrease in streaming. Also of note: for the first time in the report’s 24-year history, LGBTQ regular and recurring women on broadcast TV, outnumber LGBTQ men 53% to 47%.

Tyler Perry is expanding his content offerings with BET , with two new original series for it streaming service Bet+. Tyler Perry’s Bruh examines the world of dating career and friendship in a present-day society for a group of 30-something college friends. Tyler Perry’s Ruthless, a spin-off the linear series Tyler Perry’s The Oval, follows a young woman named Ruth into the dark underworld of a fanatical religious cult. Both projects are written, directed and executive produced by Perry. Michelle Sneed will also serve as executive producer of the series for Tyler Perry Studios. “Our landmark partnership with Tyler Perry is off to a fantastic start with the breakout success of The Oval, the #1 scripted series on cable, and Sistas,” said Scott Mills, President of BET Networks. “We’re thrilled that Tyler has created these two exciting new series exclusively for our rapidly growing streaming service, BET+. Bruh and Ruthless will join BET+’s other hit original series, including Tracy Oliver’s First Wives Club, Will Packet’s Bigger and BET’s American Gangster, and allow us to continue to super serve our subscribers’ demand for premium original African American content.”
Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story) will star opposite Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s Color Purple) in the next installment of National Geographic anthology series Genius Aretha. From Imagine Television Studios and Fox 21. Filming begins this December and is slated for a spring 2020 premiere.
Comedy Central ordered D.L. Hughley docu-comedy, How Not to Get Shot and Other Advice from White People. Hughley will executive produce and star in the special, which is based on his New York Times bestselling book of the same name and
Motortrend is moving forward with Faster With Finnegan , starring Mike Finnegan, co-host of Roadkill. Series follows Finnegan as he takes on the challenge of maxing vehicle performance using a minimal budget, limited time and plenty of sweat equity, and is set to debut in early 2020.
ABC is developing Invisible , a thriller drama from Hand of God creator Ben Watkins, Rashad Raisani (The Gifted) and 20th Century Fox TV, where Raisani under an overall deal, reports Deadline. Watkins and Raisani will write and executive produce the series, described as a sexy, high-octane thriller about an undercover federal agent going through an identity crisis as she struggles to find balance between her roles as wife and mother and her calling as a high-risk law enforcement officer.
Erica Messer, Criminal Minds executive producer and showrunner, extended her exclusive overall pod deal with ABC Studios, the studio behind the CBS procedural. Under the agreement, Messer will continue focusing on developing and executive producing original series for network, cable and streaming, which includes two projects for ABC developed through her banner, Erica Messer Productions: Best Kept Secret, which she is writing and executive producing, and Nightingale, which she is executive producing.
Netflix greenlit From Scratch, a new limited series based on Tembi Locke’s best-selling memoir that will star and be executive produced by Zoe Saldana. The project hails from Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner and 3 Arts Entertainment.
CBS is developing Extended Family from Mom and Bob ♥ Abishola co-creator Eddie Gorodetsky and Warner Bros. TV . Written and executive produced by Gorodetsky, family ensemble comedy follows a brother and sister who are at ground zero, when a family secret sends shock waves.
Rapper Warrior Ninja is coming to Quibi. Hosted by Eric Andre, the series is Dubbed as “the biggest rap battle to ever hit the hip hop world.” As its name indicates, the show is a hybrid of a rap battle and American Ninja Warrior.

Some owners of older Vizio and Samsung Smart TVs, as well as some Roku owners, are finding out they won’t be able to access Netflix anymore. Samsung announced that “due to technical limitations, Netflix will no longer be supported on 2010 and 2011 TVs beginning December 1, 2019.” Older Vizio and Roku streaming units sold before 2011 will also be affected. Samsung instructed its customers to go to Netflix.com/compatibledevices to find a list of products that accommodate Netflix. Another simple solution is for owners of older sets to buy a new streaming box from
