IN THE NEWS
CBS News and Stations is battling misinformation with a new initiative, CBS Confirmed. Rolling out over the next several months, the effort will tackle AI-generated fake news with “a team of highly skilled journalists and the latest technology and reporting techniques to fact-check questionable videos and reports,” said CBS News & Stations CEO Wendy McMahon.
Dr. Phil McGraw is ready for his next chapter. The executive producer and host of talker “Dr. Phil,” which ended its 21-season run in May, announced the launch of a new cable network. Anchored by “Dr. Phil Primetime,” Merit Street Media is set to premiere on Monday, February 26. “I absolutely love talking to real people about real problems. People who aren’t just complaining but are actively looking for real solutions to better their lives,” said McGraw. “As always, the audience will dictate our content because they are our content.”
FX’s Hulu hit “The Bear” has been renewed for a third season, set to premiere in 2024. “’The Bear,’ which wowed audiences in its first season only to achieve even greater heights in season two, has become a cultural phenomenon,” said Nick Grad, President, FX Entertainment. “We’re so proud to partner with Christopher Storer, Joanna Calo, Josh Senior, and the rest of the creative team, as well as the brilliant cast led by Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. What they and the crew have done is truly remarkable.”
Only 20% of deaths depicted on TV studied were nonviolent, and CPR is often inaccurately depicted, according to a research from nonprofit om End Well and USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center’s Media Impact Project. Other findings include:
– 78% of patients and 79% of providers were white in representations of hospice use, highlighting racial disparities observed in real-world hospice use.
– Alternative modalities like psychedelic-assisted therapy are rarely presented.
– Scripted programs are 82x more likely to depict “killing” and 30x more likely to depict “murder” than any mention of end-of-life planning or care.
“In a world where media shapes our perceptions, our recent research unveils a stark reality: the way we see death on screen does not reflect the multitude of choices that exist in real life,” said End Well Founder Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider. “We hope this study will inspire content creators to embrace their power to create nuanced stories that shape our cultural narrative – and tell the vital, diverse, and compassionate end of life journey we all deserve to experience.”
Dish Network lost 64,000 net pay TV subscribers in 3Q23, versus a gain of 30,000 in the year-ago period, and a drop of 294,000 in the second quarter. Sling TV subscribers were up 117,000, for a total of 2.12 million. “We continue to experience increased competition, including competition from other subscription video-on-demand and live-linear OTT service providers, many of which are providers of our content and offer football and other seasonal sports programming direct to subscribers on an à la carte basis,” said the company in a regulatory filing. |
