Paramount Network and Time Inc. Productions struck a deal for non-scripted series. Currently in pilot production are Sports Illustrated: True Crime (wt), from Sports Illustrated and Jerry Bruckheimer TV, and late night comedy panel/talk show Entertainment Weekly: The Bullseye, a half hour based on EW’s signature column with Conveyor Media. “Time Inc. Productions is thrilled to partner with the great teams at Paramount Network, JBTV and Conveyor, as we continue to develop and produce compelling premium television, bringing Time Inc.’s iconic brands to the forefront of long-form storytelling,” Ian Orefice, head of programming, Time Inc. Productions, tells Cynopsis.
Hallmark Channel movie The Beach House, starring Andie McDowell (Cedar Cove), Minka Kelly (Titans) and Chad Michael Murray (Agent Carter) has started production, headed for a May 2018 premiere. Film is based on the book by Mary Alice Monroe.
Freeform is developing In Case of Emergency, a drama based on the Courtney Monroe book about a work superhero who’s not such a standout in her personal life. Circle of Confusion’s Brad Mendelsohn and Elana Barry will executive produce with eOne’s Carolyn Newman; Fresh Off the Boat’s Camilla Blackett will write.
Endeavor Content has partnered with Chernin Entertainment to finance, develop and create scripted drama series with international appeal. Chernin Entertainment will produce and Endeavor will handle international sales. “This is a new, leaner studio model with state-of-the-art distribution focused on today’s evolving global marketplace,” said Chernin CEO Peter Chernin.

VIDEOS IN SHORT
Justin Killion, GM, premium content, Complex Networks and a juror for the March Cynopsis Short Form Video Festival (more on that here), offers insights on an exciting emerging space.
Cynopsis: Why is short-form content so hot?
Killion: From a creator’s perspective, the shorter clocks allow for different approaches to story-telling that have the potential to break boundaries and push content in interesting, and compelling directions.
Cynopsis: What was the biggest take-away from a short-form project you’ve been involved with?
Killion: I believe formatting is key in short-form content. If the viewer knows, even subconsciously, where they are in the story with regards to time remaining before the cliffhanger, or reveal, then they seem to maintain engagement.
Cynopsis: What’s an untapped area short-form producers should be exploring?
Killion: Premium short-form scripted content, both stand-alone as well as serialized, and formatted short-form non-scripted are the areas that I believe have the most growth potential in the short-run.
Loste Films released a short for Halloween that doubles as a proof of concept for a TV series in development. Parody Where Are We?, offering a look at what really happened during the adventures of Scooby Doo, will be available for free beginning at 8a here.
ADVERTISING
“Sales are brisk” for NBCUniversal’s 2018 coverage of the Winter Olympics and the Super Bowl, said Dan Lovinger, EVP of advertising and marketing, NBC Sports Group, in a press call. Ad gains are expected to top $935 million and $350 million, respectively. For the Olympics, said Lovinger, NBC is using a metric of average viewers 2+ instead of a TV household guarantee, using its in-house Total Audience Delivery measurement to capture viewers on all platforms, and selling special Olympic inventory with Snap. Lovinger also said he anticipates selling 6-second ads in the Olympics, but not the Super Bowl.
About a third of marketers plan to bring programmatic buying in-house, according to a new report from Advertiser Perceptions, and more than 50% of marketers and agencies believe the job will eventually become the responsibility of the brand. While most advertisers recognize the improved targeting, data, time and cost efficiencies of programmatic buying, concerns over fraud, brand safety and verification are still rising. In fact, 39% of advertisers cite fraud as the biggest worry, up 12% from the October 2016 results.

The new apps will include a “live guide” showing what’s on. After a one-week free trial, subscribers pay $35/month, no contract required.

Scripps Lifestyle Studio’s Genius Kitchen has extended its on-demand content to Android devices and Android TV. The digital platform is also debuting new special Famous Food Truck, with YouTube star Harley Morenstein. Clearly, these are not your mama’s food shows. “With Famous Food Truck and all the content on Genius Kitchen, we are bringing in social influencers and digital talent who appeal to younger viewers raised on YouTube and social media,” said Rich Lacy, SVP of digital brand creative & Genius Kitchen at Scripps Lifestyle Studios.
YouTube Space, Elizabeth Banks and Banks’ WhoHaHa digital media company are teaming for a global production program designed to empower women through comedy. The comedy stunt series looks at the backstory of audacious film stunts though history.
