Media and real estate execs announced plans to launch multi-platform The Real Estate Network by early 2016, offering “real estate information and transaction capability for consumers.” Founding ESPN chairman Stuart Evey is chairman of the board; real estate entrepreneur Robert Atkinson is CEO. The venture “has the same potential as ESPN and will revolutionize the real estate industry in the same way that ESPN did for sports,” said Evey.
 
BSkyB continues its streak of investing in American digital companies, plowing $7 million in the multi-channel network Whistle Sports. Since launching in January, Whistle Sports has raised $25 million: prior investors have included former head of Oxygen Media and Nickelodeon, Gerry Laybourne; Clear Channel Chairman and CEO Bob Pittman, and SeventySix Capital. The MCN boasts 28,000 videos on YouTube and Xbox, 8.3 million subscribers and 192 channels with 1.25 billion views.
 
Conde Nast Entertainment gets crafty in its newest The Scene offering, called Cardboard Box Office. The show focuses on the creators of the arts and crafts blog with the same title, as the family – Lilly, Leon and Orson Mackie – recreates movie scenes with DIY crafts.
 
PBS
member station WNET struck a deal with PBS Digital Studios to develop 40 episodes for two new YouTube series. The new programming is slated to premiere in January 2015, with the first series focusing on gender identity and the second on consumer technology.
 
Screen Media Ventures, LLC’s TV and movie streaming platform Popcornflix added new content from Shaftesbury yesterday. It includes: the movies Booky Makes Her Mark, Booky’s Crush, the series Connor Undercover, comedy series Unlikely Heroes, teen series Totally Amp’d and a series starring actress Ellen Page called ReGenesis. Life with Derek, Mischief City, Booky and the Secret Santa and Vacation with Derek are also available to stream for free on Popcornflix platforms.
 
Former YouTube, Google and AOL Video executive Karen Cahn VProud has founded a video social network “safe space” for women, with 250,000 users already signed up in its first month of soft launch. The foundation features original and curated video content as well as social features for members to communicate with each other on topics like parenting, business, education, feminism, LGTBQ, relationships and more.
 
NBCUniversal’s Telemundo and mun2 announced plans for over 550 hours of FIFA soccer events across all video platforms. “Three years and one week ago, NBCUniversal announced the game-changing acquisition of the exclusive Spanish-language US media rights to the FIFA World Cup,” said Joe Uva, chairman, Hispanic Enterprises and content, NBCU. “We are proud to see the first tangible manifestation of this major acquisition, which will bring unprecedented exposure for Telemundo and mun2 and offer a unique opportunity to accelerate audience growth and consolidate our position in the industry.” Fox has English-language rights.

Following Tumblr’s recent video player launch, the media site bumped up its advertising on vids yesterday. JC Penney, Hulu, Universal, Lexus, The CW and Axe ran autoplay ads on Tumblr that popped up in users’ mobile and desktop dashboards. The site plans to open up the video ads to all advertisers in mid-November; price per spot is as yet undisclosed.
 
Publicis Groupe announced the purchase of cross-device programmatic ad platform Run. “This acquisition will accelerate Publicis Groupe’s digital capabilities in the mobile space,” said Laura Desmond, global CEO of Starcom MediaVest Group. “The role of the agency has changed. We are no longer negotiating on traditional currencies. We’re negotiating on data and technologies.”
 
And speaking of programmatic: In light of Magna Global’s forecast of a 52 percent increase in programmatic advertising spend this year to $21 billion, ChoiceStream released The Programmatic Diving Rod, a whitepaper that advises brands and agencies on how to choose a programmatic vendor. “As more money is allocated to digital brands, agencies need to ask the right questions in order to meet their campaign goals and achieve the most ROI,” Vice President of Marketing Bill Guild told Cynopsis. Here are Guild’s top three pieces of advice:
     – Look for full-service. “The best partners will have the tools necessary to meet every campaign need, such as pre-campaign learning, planning, data-driven creative and real-time creative customization.”
     -Think long-term. “Asking additional questions when trying to find the right partner will expose any ceilings that may limit the success of campaigns and strain a relationship.”
     – Be Thorough. “Vet out a vendor’s quality of service. Ask about availability, added-value services, and experience in a brand’s industry.”
 

 
AD PLATFORMS
 

First party data outperforms third party data used in campaigns, according to a test conducted by Connexity. The results showed that the first-party data delivered eight percent more page views, a 25 percent higher click-through rate and 36 percent more time spent on the tested site compared to the third-party data test. It’s easy to see why: "Companies that collect data directly from consumers have complete control over how their data is classified and scored, and can target by individuals when activating that data in ad campaigns," Vice President of Marketing Paul Martecchini told Cynopsis. "When third parties aggregate data from multiple sources, you won’t have insight into quality or accuracy."
 

 
RESEARCH

 
Streaming films and TV shows on connected devices – set-top boxes, video game consoles, Smart TV – has become the preferred viewing method, according to the second New Living Room study from Crackle. In the survey of 1,200 adults between ages 18-49, streaming video across devices is the second consideration in the evening after watching broadcast TV, and half prefer streaming to a connected TV over viewing on PC, tablet and mobile phones. Other findings include:
     – 61 percent stream video weekly, a 44 percent increase in the last year.
     – 72 percent of millennials stream weekly, a 52 percent increase from the year prior.
     – 62 percent of consumers stream to their connected TV (OTT, smart TVs, game consoles), up from 54 percent from last year and compared to the 48 percent on the computer, 28 percent on a tablet and 23 percent on a mobile phone.
     – 57 percent prefer free, ad-supported programming to subscription pay-services, an increase of 51 percent from last year.

President Nancy Tellem and EVP Jordan Levin are leaving Xbox Entertainment Studios, as part of the wave of 3,000 layoffs by Microsoft. The studio shutdown had been announced in July.
 
Creative content studio Framestore hired two Executive Producers of Live Action. Jennifer Siegel takes the position in the New York office, while John Duffin will be located in LA. Siegel was most recently Executive Producer at Shilo TV; Duffin had been Executive Producer at Epoch Films.
 
BBC Worldwide North America has expanded Nick Ascheim’s role as Senior Vice President, Consumer Digital to include management of the digital advertising sales team, and Shaun Hekking has been appointed Vice President, U.S. Advertising Sales, BBC Digital.
 
Bravo Media
appointed Jonathan Hills Vice President, Digital Media. Hills joins Bravo from NBC News Digital where he was Vice President, Operations.
 
Digital marketing company PostUp announced new hires Keith Sibson as Vice President of Product and Patrick Vogt as a new Board Member. Sibson was formerly the Founder of Contractor View and Vice President of Revenue at SpareFoot. Vogt was previously the CEO of HealthiNation.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY
 

Yesterday, Netflix released the first trailer for its newest original series, Marco Polo. The ten-episode drama stars Lorenzo Richelmy as the 13th century adventurer and was produced by The Weinstein Company and Netflix; John Fusco (Homeland, Game of Thrones) both created and executive produced the series.
