VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

All’s not magical at Magic Leap. A fascinating report from Business Insider reveals that the multi-billion dollar augmented reality startup, known for its extreme opacity, is in the process of suing two of its former VPs, accusing them of trying to steal the company’s technology in an effort launch their own startup. The two former employees actually sued Magic Leap first, claiming wrongful termination. And the two lawsuits have placed plenty of new details about the company on the public record. For one, we can now say for sure what Magic Leap is developing: An advanced set of AR glasses, which will attach to a computer the size of a smartphone. But the lawsuit reveals other struggles within the company. According to the suit, Magic Leap’s employees haven’t had enough prototypes to work on, as the company’s hardware team has struggled to build enough headsets. And testimony from the lawsuit suggests that the company has had trouble holding onto talent due to the remoteness of its headquarters in Plantation, Florida. DEALS + COMPANY ACQUISITIONS

The AT&T/Time Warner deal is facing some fierce headwinds, but at least one power player isn’t fretting over it – yet. Netflix, a notable opponent of the failed Comcast/Time Warner Cable merger, won’t necessarily oppose AT&T’s Time Warner acquisition so long as the deal doesn’t affect net neutrality. That’s according to CEO Reed Hastings, who spoke at the Wall Street Journal’s WSJ.D Live conference. “As long as HBO’s bits and Netflix’s bits are treated the same, that would be a starting point,” Hastings said. It could take as long as a year for regulators to approve the deal – and there’s no guarantee that they will.

Also at the conference, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson announced that DirectTV Now, the telco’s upcoming TV streaming service, will cost $35 per month. Stephenson said that the package will feature over 100 channels. The announcement somewhat contradicts what the company has suggested in the past – namely, that it has no interest in undercutting current pay TV services. But Stephenson now says that the $35 price point is possible, largely because DirecTV won’t have to pay for any satellite dishes, set-top boxes, or customer service visits. DirecTV Now will debut in November.

The CW has ordered a new six-part series for CW Seed, its digital platform. The documentary-style show will follow a group of competitors taking on the Tough Mudder competitions – a series of 10-12 mile obstacle course races. The series will bow next year; the finale will air on the CW’s broadcast network.

RESEARCH

To determine the TV ads generating the most digital response, iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines. Here, a look at the brands that backed the most recent episode of Saturday Night Live.
NBC’s SNL tends to become event television during national election cycles, as viewers tune in to see how the comedy show will address the week’s political drama. Saturday night’s episode, hosted by Tom Hanks (Lady Gaga was the musical guest), set a new ratings high for a season that’s already enjoying its highest viewership in eight years – good news for advertisers who’ve bought into the show. In terms of digital buzz generated by ads airing during the Hanks-hosted SNL, Google, promoting its new Pixel phone, outperformed Apple, promoting the iPhone 7.” – iSpot.tv

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.
