Bully for PBS! Ken Burns’ 14-hour documentary The Roosevelts: An Intimate History averaged 9.2 million viewers across its run on seven consecutive nights, with 33.3 million viewers watching at least six minutes of the series, according to Nielsen Live+7 numbers. The average viewer tuned in for more than four hours. The week of September 15, which included 12 of the show’s 14 hours, was PBS’s most-watched week in 20 years, since Burns’ Baseball in 1994.

IN THE NEWS

Fox isn’t ready to discharge Red Band Society. With the hospital drama delivering soft but steady ratings (1.0 among A18-49 last week) and impressive DVR gains, the net ordered four more scripts.

Actor Frank Sivero filed a lawsuit Tuesday claiming The Simpsons mafiosa Louie is based on Frankie Carbone, the character Silvero played in 1990’s Goodfellas. The animated comedy’s writers lived in the same apartment complex as Sivero in 1989 and knew he was developing the Frankie character, based on his own personality, says the suit, and producer James L. Brooks “was highly aware” of who Sivero was. Sivero is asking for over $250 million for the alleged character theft.

Samba TV announced Wednesday that it has deployed sophisticated fingerprinting software monitoring every TV channel in real time, with shows ranked by popularity for “the ultimate TV guide” for viewers. Social media is also monitored, to rank trending shows. Handy for viewers – and advertisers, says the release, quoting Maile Krausse, of cross-IPG agency Ansible: “Samba TV provides a unique opportunity for brands to extend the power of TV to digital, specifically to Mobile and Tablet devices to capitalize on multi-screen use.”

Netflix gave the go-ahead for six eps of an animated series based on the comedy of Bill Burr. Voiced by Burr, Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) and Justin Long (Accepted), F Is for Family will be produced by Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Television and Gaumont International Television for a 2015 debut.

After making a splash at Sochi, figure skating champions/fashion plates Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinksi have been named NBC’s lead figure skating announcing team, joining play-by-play announcer Terry Gannon. The trio replaces Tom Hammond, Sandra Bezic and Scott Hamilton; Hamilton will remain at the net as a special contributor.

Tyler Perry’s no stranger to the small screen (ask TBS and Oprah), but the writer/producer/director is expanding into new territory with a family animated film, Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Tough Love, arriving on DVD and On Demand January 20, with digital HD available January 13 from Lionsgate.

Corday Productions, producer of NBC soap Days of Our Lives, is partnering with digital romance net TruLOVE to develop original properties based on TruLOVE’s romance story library. “Our new projects with TruLOVE are sure to capture the hearts and fantasies of our viewers,” said Corday CEO Ken Corday, who promised to unveil “more details soon, in true dramatic fashion.”

How do programmers partner with brands to deliver messaging that appeals to children, and satisfies both parents and the FTC? PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

ABC is diving deeper into Shark Tank. The net ordered a spinoff of the business reality show, Beyond the Tank, showing what happened to contestants who won investor deals. Shark Tank’s Sony Pictures Television and United Artists Media Group will produce. Friday’s Tank had a best-in-broadcast 1.9/7 rating among A18-49.

Lifetime ordered limited series Lizzie Borden: The Fall River Chronicles, a fictionalized account of events after the acquittal of the accused murderer. Christina Ricci will reprise the role she played in Lifetime movie Lizzie Borden Took an Ax, ad-supported cable’s second most-watched movie telecast among Women YTD (after Lifetime’s Flowers in the Attic).

MTV ordered two new unscripted series: half-hour competition Broke A$$ Game Show, from B17 Entertainment, and Todrick, a docu-series following YouTube star Todrick Hall, which Hall is exec producing with Scooter Braun and Danny Rose.

Bunim/Murray Productions announced it is opening an office in New York, headed by Rob Bagshaw (Top Chef Masters) as SVP of development and production.

TNT ordered 10 eps of a Cold Justice spinoff from Wolf Reality and Magical Elves. The untitled true crime series, slated for a spring 2015 bow, will focus on sexual assault cases. Cold Justice averaged over 2.2 million viewers in Live+7 over the summer.

ABC gave a put pilot commitment to anthology comedy Bachelor Party, with each season focusing on a different wedding party. Loosely based on the 1984 movie starring Tom Hanks, project comes from 20th Century Fox Television and 20th-based Small Dog Picture Co. and The Walcott Co.

Fusion gave a 20-ep order for Like, Share, Die, a quarter-hour, animated sketch series from Mondo Media, the leading distributor of animation on YouTube. “Mondo has a unique sensibility and platform for finding, producing and building large, loyal digital audiences," said Wade Beckett, Fusion’s chief programming officer. The show, mixing topical comedy with Mondo’s original series, is set to debut in December.

ABC bought comedy The Finger, written by Ben Karlin (Modern Family). Project from ABC Studios and 3 Arts stars UK actor Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz) as a jewel thief who wants to quit and open a sandwich shop.

UK’s Channel 5 ordered Poverty: Through a Child’s Eyes, with young narrators recording their stories of hardship on video diaries. Doc comes from Spun Gold.

Julie Ann Robinson (Suburgatory) has two projects in the works at ABC: The Long Game, a drama from Robinson’s Canny Lads Productions and Shondaland, and No Angels, with Amblin TV.
