TOP NEWS

 
Re/Code reports that YouTube will introduce a slate of programming for its upcoming paid subscription service tomorrow. Over a year ago, YouTube announced that it intended to “fund new content from some of our top creators.” And according to Re/Code’s sources, some of said content will wind up behind YouTube’s subscription paywall. (It’s a good bet that the content will in part consist of upcoming programming from Smosh, Prank vs. Prank, Joey Graceffa, and the Fine Brothers, which YouTube previewed in an April 2015 blog post.) YouTube will continue operating its free, ad-supported site alongside the subscription version. Some sources say the subscription service will launch later this month, though that’s not set in stone. In any event, Re/Code says the new YouTube-funded programming likely won’t be available until 2016.
 
Variety reports that Molotov, the soon-to-launch French OTT platform, has inked a massive OTT deal with more than 80 French and international TV channels. The service will now cover 90% of the most-watched TV channels in France (and the company has other deals in the works as well). Molotov allows users to stream live TV programming across multiple devices, and to sort content based on individual preferences and friends’ recommendations. Before officially launching, the service will first be available for preview by invitation, via Molotov.tv

 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Time Inc. is getting a little more adorkable. The company acquired HelloGiggles, a digital lifestyle publishing start-up for women, co-founded by New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel. No financial terms were disclosed, though the Wall Street Journal reports that Time paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 million.

 
APPS

 
For the second time in a month, the security of Chinese app-users has been compromised. Apple just banned hundreds of apps from the App Store, all of which use a third-party advertising tool developed by the Chinese company Youmi. The reason? The apps can gather users’ private data, including phone serial numbers and the email addresses associated with users’ Apple IDs. “We are working closely with developers to help them get updated versions of their apps that are safe for customers and in compliance with our guidelines back in the App Store quickly,” Apple wrote.

ADVERTISING

 
Last week, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) offered a bit of a mea culpa regarding ad blocking – not just on behalf of itself, but seemingly on behalf of the entire advertising industry. “We messed up,” said Scott Cunningham, Senior VP of Technology and Ad Operations. Cunningham was referring to the way that certain types of advertisements have legitimately weakened consumer experience. (In the past, Cunningham had often directed the lion’s share of his scorn at the ad blocking industry.) “Looking back now, our scraping of dimes may have cost us dollars in consumer loyalty,” he said. As a result, the IAB is launching L.E.A.N. (Light, Encrypted, Ad choice supported, Non-invasive) Ads. The goal of the initiative is to address security and privacy through the use of encrypted ads, and to reduce the size and power-demands of video and animated ads. 

 

OTT + SVOD
 

Some less negative news from the Middle Kingdom: Chinese online streaming service iQiyi has committed to buy or produce 40 new original shows next year. The company says it will spend half of its annual budget producing or buying original TV and movies. iQiyi is owned by the web services company Baidu.
 
Cable and telecommunications provider Mediacom now has a leg up on the competition, and that leg is called Netflix. The company has completed a direct fiber connection to Netflix’s network. The result: Mediacom’s customers will see improved performance in their Netflix service. The project was initially announced in May.

Michelle Obama
, content creator? The White House announced via press release that the First Lady plans to launch the Better Make Room campaign, part of her Reach Higher initiative aimed at encouraging higher education. The Better Make Room campaign, targeting Gen Z, will be geared toward educating students about the importance of continuing some form of education after high school. According to the release, the campaign will “leverage traditional and new media platforms to celebrate student stories in the same way that we often celebrate celebrities and athletes.” As for the new media: The First Lady’s digital partners include Vine, AwesomenessTV, Mashable, Funny or Die, and College Humor; and goodness knows you can’t have college humor without college.

 

CONTENT PROGRAMMING

 
What’s Up Moms
, the digital network geared toward millennial mothers, has been making some moves. The network signed two new vloggers, Esther Anderson and Kathryn. (Kathryn’s last name has never been disclosed.) Anderson is known for her YouTube page, Story of Life, and her popular Facebook-native videos. Kathryn is best known for Do It On a Dime, her YouTube channel focused on stretching one’s budget. In addition, the What’s Up Moms YouTube channel has launched a new web comedic series starring Karen Albert, in which she offers tutorials on home projects. |

 

PLATFORMS AND TECH

 
Data storage company Seagate has acquired the personal media startup Lyve Minds. Last year, Lyve Minds launched an internet-connected storage device designed to back up personal media across devices, using apps to download photos and videos from phones directly to TVs and other screens. The company was also said to be developing a GoPro-like action camera, but Variety reports that the camera will launch late, if it launces at all.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 

GoPro has a new exec, and it’s safe to say he’s a sports fan. Variety reports that Bill McCullough will serve as Executive Producer for GoPro’s motor sports and team sports channels. (GoPro distributes the channels across Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms.) Previously, he served as VP of Creative Development and Operations for HBO Sports.

 

Interactive marketing agency Digital Pulp hired Christopher Daly as Director of User Experience. Daly will be in charge of Digital Pulp’s UX design team.  Previously, Daly served as SVP of Products and Platforms and Head of UX at the digital services company BBDO Atmosphere Proximity.
