It wasn’t hard to see this coming. Verizon’s $4.8 billion valuation of Yahoo may come crashing down thanks to the September revelation that hackers stole info on over 500 million Yahoo user accounts. The telco now wants to cut $1 billion off its acquisition deal, according to a report from the New York Post. (According to the report, Verizon would also like to set aside an additional $1 billion in reserve funds to cover liabilities related to the hack.) According to a source who spoke to the Post, Verizon’s AOL is a driving force behind the effort to lower Verizon’s bidding price. One major issue that reportedly angers AOL: Before Yahoo was 100 percent certain it had been hacked, the company reportedly kept Verizon in the dark about the potential breach. “[AOL boss] Tim [Armstong] is…pretty upset about the lack of disclosure and he’s saying, ‘Can we get out of this or can we reduce the price?” the source told the Post. Yahoo isn’t having it. According to the report, Yahoo’s position is simple: The deal is set, and Verizon has no legal means to alter its terms.
Google is out to boost Google Home, its upcoming Amazon Echo competitor. The tech giant is renaming the Google Cast app ‘Google Home.’ ‘Cast,’ which enables users to synch their mobile phones with Chromecast devices and other hardware, will now be able to synch with Google Home speakers as well. As Google puts it: The Google Home app will enable users to “discover new content and manage (their) Google Home assistant and Cast devices.”

Vice Media is in the money. The millennial-oriented media company has debuted its newest addition to the Vice News network: Vice Money, the company’s video vertical for business and finance news. (It went live Sunday; you can find it at news.vice.com/money.) At launch, Geico and Ally Financial are serving as sponsors. Matt Phillips, the former finance and markets editor for Quartz, is serving as Editor-in-Chief.
The digital media company Obsev is bringing all of its brands to Roku and Amazon Fire devices. [Obsev’s six brands include: The Fumble (Sports), Hollyscoop (Celebrity News), Obsev Now (“Nerdy” News), The Lowdown with Diana Madison (one-on-one interviews), Obsev Entertainment (Comic & Gaming News), and Obsev Food (that one’s self-explanatory).] Obsev formed last year, when video content producer Shandy Media consolidated its existing brands. At the time, Obsev CEO Raymond Attipa told Cynopsis Digital that 80% of Obsev’s audience was on mobile. “We would love to see around 30% of our mobile audience convert to the OTT apps in the early stages of this expansion,” he told Cynopsis Digital on Friday. "More and more, our audience is turning to streaming services for immediate and customized access,” added Obsev Co-Founder, Diana Madison. “Distributing our content to Roku and Amazon Fire was a no-brainer and will give them that access, direct to their TVs & apps."

The lesson from the NBA’s newest hire: The league’s media distribution plan will have an increasingly heavy emphasis on digital platforms. The NBA has hired Jeff Geels as its new Director of Global Media Distribution. Geels most recently served as Director of Business Development for Otter Media, AT&T and the Chernin Group’s joint digital video venture. Geels will oversee work on the NBA’s OTT efforts, including the SVOD service NBA League Pass. The league is also currently developing an over-the-top network in partnership with ESPN, though not much is known about that project just yet. Geels will be based in New York. He’ll report to Alex Kaplan, the NBA’s SVP of Global Media Distribution.
The New York Post’ loss is Snapchat’s gain. The mobile messaging app (corporate name: Snap Inc.) has hired David Brinker, the News Corp.-owned paper’s President. Brinker will lead business development for the app’s content division, which includes Live Stories and Snapchat’s Discover platform. Brinker will start his new role later this month, reporting to Nick Bell, Snap’s VP of Content
