The NBA parked a new deal with ExxonMobil, locking in a new multiyear marketing partnership that makes the brand an official marketing partner of the NBA, WNBA, and NBA Development League in the US and China. The deal marks the largest and most comprehensive ever in the motor oil category during the league’s 70-year history with the opening act making ExxonMobil’s Mobil 1 lubricant the official motor oil of the leagues. ExxonMobil will also serve as an associate partner of NBA Global Games China and promote the partnership at preseason games in Shanghai on Oct. 9 and Beijing on Oct. 12. In addition, throughout the 2016-17 season, the company will develop and promote NBA-themed integrated campaigns, including advertising, custom digital video content, and social media programs.
“By partnering with the NBA, ExxonMobil can engage consumers across the United States and China, also two of our largest markets, to extend our brands’ recognition, help reinforce our leadership position, and distinguish our products in today’s competitive global marketplace,” said Matt Bergeron, vice president, marketing, ExxonMobil Fuels, Lubricants & Specialties Marketing Company.
SportsMEDIA Technology added Sportvision to its portfolio, announced the acquisition in a move that “gives SMT a broader and deeper reach to a host of new clients and sectors in the highly competitive global sports and broadcast services industry” and “provides SMT with complementary state-of-the-art technology components that will facilitate and accelerate SMT’s plans for developing its next-generation products for the sports broadcast and sports event industries.” Sportvision has been awarded more than 70 patents for its technical innovations and is best known for its Emmy award-winning Virtual Yellow 1st & Ten line; its MLB pitch and strike-zone tracking system called PITCH/fx.
ESPN re-signed NBA commentator and senior writer Marc Stein to a new multi-year agreement. Stein will continue his run with the company (which began at 2000) serving as ESPN’s lead national basketball reporter and provide regular news reports for SportsCenter and other news and information programming.
Speaking of ESPN, the company announced that through the first five weeks of college football, ABC’s Saturday Night Football package is averaging a total live audience of 6,201,000 viewers to rank as the most-watched college football franchise on any network. Numbers were boosted by Saturday’s Louisville/Clemson matchup which generated a total live audience of 9,494,000 viewers for the network.
Univision Deportes is heading to Havana, announcing a trip to Cuba to offer live coverage of the first friendly match between the US and Cuba men’s national soccer teams. The contest takes place tomorrow at 3p on UDN and UniMas.
SB Nation Radio is launching a new morning show featuring the returns of show hosts Scott Linn, Tim Murray and Steve Solomon, dubbed appropriately, SB Nation AM with Linn, Murray and Solly. The show will debut on Oct. 10th at 6a and mark the return to the network for the trio after spending six years on The Steve Czaban Show.
FOX Sports serves up the Sixth Annual Monster Energy Cup live from Las Vegas on Oct. 15 at 9:30p on FS2 with replays on Oct. 17 on FS1 and Oct. 29 on FOX. Ralph Sheheen hosts with Jeff Emig (booth) and Ricky Carmichael (track) providing analysis and Jenny Taft reporting.

AT&T continues to beef up the talent roster heading to Houston for the Super Bowl, announcing a multi-year deal with Taylor Swift that will see her headline DIRECTV Super Saturday Night in February before the game. Feb. 4 will see the artist perform in a custom 64,000 square foot venue in the city created especially for this event with fans gaining access via AT&T promotions and campaigns.
Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman is participating in the Pope’s first-ever “Sport at the Service of Humanity” conference this week, joining the likes of the United Nations Secretary General and IOC President. Today, she will be leading a break-out session focusing on women in sports in a move to create actionable next-and establish an infrastructure with the full support and resources of the Vatican.
Gannett Co. is adding Golfweek to its collection, where it will join the USA Today Sports Media Group, where it will add more than 5 million unique monthly golf fans. “Golfweek gives us amazing depth and expertise to bring to our strong golf audience across the USA Today NETWORK,” says Dave Morgan, president of the USA Today Sports Media Group, who will also serve as publisher of Golfweek. “We are thrilled to add such a trusted and respected brand as Golfweek to the USA Today family and are confident that this will provide tremendous new opportunities for Golfweek and our partners.”
United Soccer League agreed to a three-year deal with Opta to become the league’s Official Data Partner and manage/deliver statistical analysis for all USL matches, including regular season, playoffs and championship games. The partnership will begin during the 2016 USL Championship on Oct. 23 at 8p on ESPNU.
The ACC Digital Network hits the big 5 this week, and will be celebrating the occasion with a half-decade’s worth of videos to commemorate the occasion. The clips will live at a special anniversary page on theACC.com and include categories such as the craziest moments of the past five years, best performances, champions and more.
