10.02.14

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 2, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The NFL is going long with DIRECTV, officially announcing an extension and expansion with the company to carry NFL Sunday Ticket in a new multi-year agreement. The new deal also expands DIRECTV’s rights to stream the package live on mobile devices and via broadband and DIRECTV will continue to carry its Red Zone Channel and new DIRECTV Fantasy Zone channel. In addition, DIRECTV and the NFL also extended their NFL Network distribution relationship with DIRECTV to offer its customers TV Everywhere access to NFL Network.

“This new agreement is a testament to the terrific long-term relationship we have with the NFL and its millions of fans across the country,” said Mike White, chairman, president and CEO of DIRECTV. “NFL SUNDAY TICKET has always been the centerpiece of DIRECTV’s sports leadership and we’re pleased to continue our relationship with the NFL and be a part of the league’s future growth and success.”

ON THE AIR

A memorable 2014 MLB American League Wild Card Game delivered the goods to TBS, as the extra innings battle averaged 5,234,000 total viewers to represent a 12% markup over the average total viewers for the two MLB Wild Card Games that ran on the network last year. The corresponding 3.3 U.S. HH rating is up 10% and pushed TBS to win the night across all of cable television, according to Nielsen.

Dick Vitale will remain a staple of ESPN for a few more years, at least. The company announced that Vitale inked a new contract extension that will run through the 2016-17 season. “I am just so honored to be at ESPN for over three decades,” said Vitale. “I am absolutely thrilled, at my relatively young age of 75, ESPN feels I am still passionate enough to talk about a game I love, college basketball.  I am just so grateful to be part of the ESPN family. Without ESPN, there would no Dickie V; there would be no Hall of Fames.  I am forever indebted to them.”

NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the 2014 Ryder Cup hit more than 18.5 million unique viewers, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals across its platforms. Golf Channel on NBC’s live coverage of Saturday’s matches hit a 1.4 U.S. HH score, and 1.9 million average viewers and ranked as the most-watched, non-football sports telecast on Saturday. Sunday’s matches handed the channel with a 1.6 rating and 2.2 million average viewers. Meawhile, Golf Live Extra posted 11.9 million minutes streamed across three days of coverage, which is the most ever watched of a single event on Golf Live Extra.

Sportsman Channel locked in a deal to remain the exclusive national television partner and official network of the famed Iditarod. The deal will continue the ambitious partnership with the event and utilize a full complement of media assets from Sportsman and InterMedia Outdoors. Coverage will include a full slate of programming, culminating with coverage of the 2015 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race with Iditarod Productions continuing to produce the annual sled dog event. The 2015 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race will begin on March 7 in Anchorage, Alaska.

ESPN reports that its 2014 fiscal year audience grew 6% compared to 2013, according to Nielsen. Overall, the network averaged 1,012,000 viewers throughout the year, bolstered by the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Monday Night Football, college football bowl games and the NBA Playoffs. In addition, ESPN’s family of networks  ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Classic  scored a collective 4% spike with the six U.S. networks averaging a combined 1,445,000 viewers.

Meanwhile, NBCSN’s third-quarter viewership grew 20% in primetime and 14% in Total Day in Nielsen numbers versus Q3 in 2013. That marks the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth for the network, pulling an average of 124,000 primetime viewers for the quarter and up 20% from 103,000 in last year’s Q3, while Total Day viewership increased 14% to 84,000.

ESPN Classic On-Demand is slated to launch later this month for DISH customers via set top boxes. Fans will be able to tap into 600+ hours of events from the library and marks ESPN’s largest on-demand content offering. “As fans continue to evolve the way they consume content, making ESPN Classic an on-demand offering is the logical next step,” said David Preschlack, Executive Vice President of Affiliate Sales and Marketing for Disney and ESPN Media Networks.  “It is a powerful consumer proposition and a great example of how we are collaborating with our partners to free up bandwidth, allowing them to better serve customers.”

The 2022 Winter Olympic Games is boiling down to a game of survivor. Oslo, Norway became the latest potential host city to drop out of consideration for the event, according to the AP, citing high costs. That now leaves only two final contenders in Beijing and Almaty, Kazakhstan. The IOC will select the 2022 host city on July 31, 2015, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

Danica Patrick unveiled plans to support sponsor GoDaddy’s “Put the Brakes on Breast Cancer” campaign, and will drive a special pink racecar at Martinsville Speedway on Oct. 26 as part of the push. The car also will feature names of people who have been affected  by the disease, and anyone who donates $10 or more to the National Breast Cancer Foundation by noon today will become a part of the campaign. GoDaddy is also donating $50,000 to the foundation. Overall, Danica will drive the pink car and wear a pink fire suit for three races this month.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

Turner Sports announced that this year’s NBA League Pass, which offers more than 900 live NBA regular season games, will be available across more platforms than ever before this season including the Xbox One for the first time. Features include live and on demand feeds of both home and away team broadcasts for every game, along with a full on demand archive for all nationally and locally televised games, condensed versions of all games and a catalog of select classic games.

Derek Jeter is getting into the media game, revealing the launch of The Players’ Tribune, a multimedia digital company that offers world-class athletes the opportunity to share opinions and perspectives, with Jeter serving as the company’s Founding Publisher. Content is slated to include videos, podcasts, photo galleries, and polls, covering topics that span from sports commentary to pop culture. Legendary Entertainment will serve as a partner to offer creative support as well as capital.

Flocasts has received $8 million in funding from Causeway Media Partners with the infusion helping the company focus on “changing the way passionate communities connect over the growing sports they love.” “Flocasts is changing the game for sports often overlooked by the mainstream media. Their authentic content and programming is unparalleled,” said Mark Wan, managing partner of Causeway Media Partners. “They have a proven model that works and clearly resonates with their audience, and we feel they are well positioned for future growth in the industry.” Flocasts expects audiences to exceed 10 million unique visitors per month in 2015.

The men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association is giving fans the chance to watch more than 180 games live and in high definition via the new digital platform WCHA.tv. The outlet is powered by America ONE Sports and EverSport.tv on WCHA.tv and every league game will be streamed live, along with each team’s non-conference home contests, the league’s postseason tournament and the WCHA Final Five.

High school sports destination MaxPreps is teaming with Hudl in a multi-year agreement that will highlight athletes around the country with “extensive video coverage and streamline the process of gathering data for high schools.” Beginning with the current fall sports season, MaxPreps.com will feature Hudl highlight reels on its team and athlete pages, offering fans access to highlights for more than 15,000 high school football teams and hundreds of thousands of individual athletes.
