IN THE NEWS
Twitter is banishing political advertising from its platform. “While internet advertising is incredibly powerful and very effective for commercial advertisers, that power brings significant risks to politics, where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions,” wrote CEO Jack Dorsey on Wednesday. He added that machine learning-based optimization of messaging and micro-targeting, unchecked misleading information, and deep fakes “present entirely new challenges to civic discourse,” and that it would be “best to focus our efforts on the root problems, without the additional burden and complexity taking money brings.” The new policy, banning not only ads for candidates but also issue ads, goes into effect November 22.
More Americans trust local news than they do national news, but perceptions of partisan bias are filtering down to the local level, according to a new study from Knight Foundation and Gallup. Diving deeper into big topics won’t help matters. “The data suggest that moving into more aggressive coverage of social and political issues could further polarize views – and possibly lead to an erosion of trust,” said the report. In the study, 75% of Democrats said local news did an “excellent” or “good” job, versus 54% of Republicans.
AMC canceled Lodge 49 after two seasons. “This wonderful show gave audiences fresh and unforgettable characters in a world that did not exist anywhere else on television,” said AMC of the well-reviewed series, which during its sophomore run averaged 132,000 viewers A18-49 and 428,000 total viewers in Live+3, down 40% from season one.
Streaming service HBO Max, launching in July, will cost $14.99 – the same as HBO. That’s a price WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey called an “IQ test” for anyone deciding between the services. “Why wouldn’t you want twice the content for the same price?” Stankey asked during his company’s investors day. That said, the plan is for the linear channel to continue to operate as usual after the debut of its streaming sib.
Tweens and teens aren’t as tuned into TV screens as they were in 2015, but they’re viewing more video. A new study from Common Sense Media found that 56% of eight- to 12-year-olds report watching video daily, up from 24% four years ago, and 69% A13-18 say they watch daily, up from 34% in 2015. Respondents in both groups say they watch about a half hour less of TV on a TV set today than they did in 2015, and most of that is time-shifted.
Calling all college students! Enter the Cynopsis Homecoming contest by answering one of these two questions: Do you think sharing OTT subscription passwords is cheating? Entries should be 300-400 words; content, originality and grammar will be judged. Please submit entries to [email protected]. Subject line: Homecoming Contest.
MoffattNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson didn’t mince words about the effects of cord-cutting on the pay-TV business. “In previewing the last quarter of media earnings, we used the term ‘freaking ugly’ to describe the current state of the U.S. Pay TV market,” Nathanson said in a research note Wednesday. “This quarter, we will need to find a new phrase that is even more negative to describe third-quarter trends.” Nathanson estimates overall pay TV subscriber losses at 3.8%, versus less than 1% 15 months ago, and predicts negative earnings revisions until there is stability in cord-cutting trends.
The Directors Guild of America reached a tentative deal with ABC, CBS and NBC for a new contract for those working in news, sports, operations and local stations that increases wages and fees by 2.5% in each of the three years of the agreement, among other things. “News, sports and local television collectively reach massive audiences, and the contributions of our members who work in these areas are absolutely critical to the success of these operations,” said DGA president Thomas Schlamme. ‘This deal is a testament to that value.
NBC News’ digital editorial division voted to form a union representing about 150 workers. “Forming a union will afford us a collective voice in decisions that will benefit the entire company, providing much-needed transparency and ensuring a safer workplace,” said the employees in a letter to NBC management that also brought up “serious questions” about the handling of workplace sexual misconduct. NBC News EVP of Digital Chris Berend responded to the email in a memo to staff, saying the network would “address the request quickly.”
Will Arnett (Arrested Development), who voices Lego Batman in The Lego Movie films, will host Fox Lego-building competition series Lego Masters. Series premieres Wednesday, February 5 at 9p.

It’s a great fit for Disney+,” said Agnes Chu, SVP, Content, Disney+.
