Young people want to see less sex and more friendship on TV. That’s according to the Teens & Screens 2023 Report from the Center for Scholars & Storytellers at UCLA, which found that 47.5% of respondents ages 13-24 feel most TV shows and movie plots don’t need sexual content, and 51.5% want to see more focus on friendships and platonic relationships. Other takeaways:
· 56% of those ages 10-24 prefer original content over franchises and remakes.
· Twice as many adolescents prefer binge releases over weekly drops.
· Adolescents want to see lives like their own depicted on screen.

Digging deeper, “While it’s true that adolescents want less sex on TV and in movies, what the survey is really saying is that they want more and different kinds of relationships reflected in the media they watch,” said Dr. Yalda T. Uhls, founder and director of CSS, co-author of the study.

Tucker Carlson’s new media company, Last Country, has officially signed its first advertiser. In a deal worth at least $1 million, ads from conservative-leaning shopping app Public Square will air on the former Fox News host’s show on X starting in November, along with Carlson’s other platforms. “This partnership between our two companies will employ a reach not found anywhere else,” Public Square posted on X. “We at [Public Square] are thrilled to collaborate with @Tucker Carlson as we build an ecosystem of alternatives to the existing commerce and media incumbents, respectively.”

TelevisaUnivision reported overall third-quarter global revenue of $1.28 billion, up 11%. Concaf Gold Cup soccer and music awards show Premios Juventad helped the company collect 3Q23 ad revenue of $777 million, up 11%. In the US, ad sales saw a year-over-year decline of 1%. “TelevisaUnivision delivered another strong quarter of double-digit growth, which propelled us to historic highs in a number of areas in our business, including record third quarter revenue in the US,” said CEO Wade Davis.

Canela Media has partnered with Hyundai, one of the show’s presenting sponsors, for season two of unscripted reality series “Secretos de Villanas,” which premieres on Canela.TV today. In an original short, telenovela star Aylin Mujica will be shown driving around in a Hyundai Palisade, and several traditional spots will air within each episode and across Canela.TV’s digital and social portfolio. “Hispanics make up more than half of the multicultural market, and Hispanic women with significant buying power are on the front lines of purchasing decisions,” said Oswald Méndez, Chief Marketing Officer of Canela Media. “Hyundai’s commitment to understanding and reaching this important audience through custom, branded content extensions of this hit show will entice fans to connect with and join Hyundai on their journey.”

In 3Q23, some retail brands outperformed expectations while leaning into passive viewing experiences like morning shows and drama re-airs, according to iSpot.tv’s new TV Transparency Report, which explores Q3 TV ad trends. Takeaways include:
· Viewers found 95% of QSR video ads funny in Q3 – the most of any industry. Spots from Jimmy John’s, Jack in the Box, and Jersey Mike’s led the pack.
· CPG brands increased Q3 daytime TV ad impressions by over 14% year-over-year thanks in part to significant boosts during daytime soap operas like “The Young and the Restless” (+26%) and “General Hospital” (+48%).
· Prescription brands continued to emphasize advertising during news programs, both as a vehicle to create awareness around new drugs and to renew awareness about existing Rx options.
· Beer brands advertised big during NFL games in Q3, but also flocked to WNBA and Women’s World Cup action — along with telenovelas (as was the case for Michelob Ultra).

SiriusXM and FOX News Media struck a new long-term agreement to continue carrying FOX News Channel, FOX Business Network and FOX News Headlines 24/7 exclusively across SiriusXM’s platforms. FOX News On-Demand Audio will remain available on the SiriusXM app.

EDO conducted an analysis of advertising during the “2023 BET Hip Hop Awards” as part of its strategic measurement partnership with BET. The analysis shows a significant increase in viewer engagement compared to competitive primetime programming – on average, consumers were 69% more likely to engage with advertisers during the awards show than they were during competitive primetime programming on October 10. This year’s program was 23% more effective at driving ad engagement over the “2022 Hip Hop Awards.” Out of about 50 brand advertisers (excluding streaming and move entertainment properties), Popeye’s (6.5x as much engagement as the median performing brand) and KFC (6x as much) were the top brands consumers engaged with, as measured by total TV-driven engagement.

Ovation TV and partner Charter Communications announced the recipients of the 2023-2024 Stand for The Arts Awards, which recognizes local arts, cultural and educational organizations and programs. Since the initiative started in 2017, Ovation TV and Charter have given out 70 awards totaling $700,000 towards arts education. This year, 10 organizations will receive support in Charter markets across the country.

Nick Cannon will host a docuseries set to premiere Tuesday, November 21 at 9p on VH1. “Nick Cannon Presents: Future Superstars” follows Cannon’s Future Superstars 2023 Tour, showcasing emerging artists.

Nicely Entertainment is expanding beyond its roots in female-driven romance movies with the launch of Darkly Entertainment, a new label dedicated to producing and distributing darker elevated dramatic content for theatrical and digital distribution. Darkly Entertainment will officially launch at this year’s American Film Market.

In development at Fireglory Pictures are limited series “Oval,” based on the novel by Elvia Wilk, and “The Babes,” based on the true story of Babes4Y founder Madeleine Altmann.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

History Channel’s “The Bermuda Triangle: Into Cursed Waters” is back for season two on Tuesday, November 14 at 10p. In the premiere, the dive team discovers the lost remains of an A-3 Skywarrior jet that fatally crashed in July 1960 while trying to land on the USS Saratoga.

A new season of “Ink Master” premieres on Paramount+ on Wednesday, November 1, with a new judge: three-time series champ DJ Tambe. Also on the way to the streamer is new docuseries “De la Calle.” Co-created and hosted by journalist Nick Barili, the show explores the evolution and influence of Latino urban music.

Dennis Quaid (“The Right Stuff”) will host Fox Nation four-parter “Top Combat Pilot,” following training at the US Marines’ Weapons and Tactics Instructor course. The series premieres Monday, November 6.

Showcase has added “Culprit” to its fall lineup. The heist series premieres Monday, November 19 at 9p.

“The Mountain Kitchen,” hosted by Annie Starke, self-taught cook and Glenn Close’s daughter, debuts on Magnolia Network on Sunday, November 5 at 1:30p. The series follows Starke as she shares great eats at her family’s mountain ranch in Montana.

“Young David,” an animated series about King David as a child, premieres Friday, November 10 on Christian streamer Minno, and the Angel Studios platform.

COMING UP

Premiere dates were revealed for the three new “Doctor Who” 60th anniversary specials, set to debut on Disney+ globally except in the UK and Ireland, where they will air on the BBC. The three specials, titled “The Star Beast” (November 25), “Wild Blue Yonder” (December 2) and “The Giggle” (December 9) will reunite the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant) and Donna Temple-Noble (Catherine Tate) as they come face-to-face with villain the Toymaker, played by Neil Patrick Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”).

Apple TV+ is loading up on holiday programming. Among the treats: A Christmas Eve episode of “Frog and Toad,” and a sing-along version of the holiday musical “Spirited” available starting Friday, December 1.

CMT Smashing Glass: A Celebration of the Groundbreaking Women of Music salutes trailblazing female artists on Wednesday, November 15 at 9p on CMT.

The Country Music Association shared the initial lineup of performers for “The 57th Annual CMA Awards.” The lineup includes Luke Bryan, Jelly Roll, K. Michelle, Little Big Town, Megan Moroney, Old Dominion, Carly Pearce, Chris Stapleton, Tanya Tucker and Lainey Wilson. Hosted by Bryan and Peyton Manning, the event airs Wednesday, November 8 at 8p on ABC.

“You Were My First Boyfriend” debuts Wednesday, November 8 at 9p on HBO. The high school reunion doc had its world premiere at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival.

The price for a monthly subscription to Apple TV+ is rising from $6.99 to $9.99, while an annual sub will jump to $99 from $69. Apple TV+’s price hikes follow similar moves by Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Peacock.

TECH

Alphabet reported $76.7 billion in sales for 3Q23, up 11% year-over-year. Analysts’ estimates had been $76 billion. The company beat profit estimates, with a 42% jump to $19.7 billion, versus a forecast of $18.5 billion. Google Cloud posted less rosy numbers, posting sales of $8.4 billion, versus a projected $8.6 billion. “Investors were disappointed by the relatively weak performance at its Google Cloud Platform,” wrote Jesse Cohen, an analyst at investing.com in a note.

Amazon Ads is launching a self-service advertising system, Sponsored TV, that enables brands selling goods on Amazon to reach more customers by using the company’s Amazon Freevee, Twitch, and streaming channels offered through Fire TV apps. Sponsored TV campaigns are powered by Amazon’s machine learning technology.

Cint announced the seamless integration of social platform measurement into its attitudinal measurement product, Lucid Impact Measurement by Cint, addressing challenges in brand lift measurement across multiple media platforms. With the integration of social into Lucid Impact Measurement, Cint will provide a combined view of brand lift across digital, TV, and now, social platforms, empowering advertisers to optimize their strategies inflight.

All Sports Television Network signed an agreement with technology development company Stadium Engineering Network. The deal calls for All Sports to provide sports-related entertainment content that will be integrated into the company’s stationary, portable, and mobile devices. The initial projects under development by the two companies involve placing All Sports content on screens at mobile phone charging stations and at EV charging stations.

Proximic by Comscore has enabled a new suite of audience segments that reach users based on exposure to specific political campaigns and local TV exposure. The new segments are available exclusively to clients of The Trade Desk. “As more political advertisers look for ways for greater reach with right audiences, digital advertising becomes a critically important component to media campaigns. The British Basketball League struck a media rights agreement for coverage of the League’s 2023/24 season with NBC Sports Regional Networks. Basketball fans in the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and Philadelphia regions will now have the have access to basketball action on NBC Sports Bay Area, NBC Sports California, NBC Sports Chicago and NBC Sports Philadelphia, respectively. The RSNs will showcase two weekly games, along with Men’s and Women’s tentpole events.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are returning to tennis’ season-ending WTA Finals, live on Tennis Channel October 29-November 5. Held in Cancun, Mexico this year, the annual championships feature the eight singles players and doubles teams that earned the most points on the tour in 2023. The first match takes place at 3:30p.
