IN THE NEWS

Television news viewership was up 23 percent during September year over year, according to the latest Nielsen Local Watch Report. During the month, viewers watched news for 7 hours and 5 minutes per week, representing 35 percent of all TV viewing. Cable news generated 3:26 of viewing in September, local news accounted for for 2:23 and national broadcast news garnered 1:16, according to Nielsen. Peak news viewing during the pandemic came in April, when viewers took in close to 9.5 hours of news weekly.

No one loves a theme like Hallmark Channel, and this year the net is partnering with Gwen Stefani and songwriter/producer Ryan Tedder on an original song to serve as the theme for its Countdown to Christmas. New tune “Here This Christmas” was released Friday in conjunction with the launch of the annual programming event. Stefani also recorded a fresh cover of classic carol “Sleigh Ride,” to be used in promos.

Saturday Night Live booked John Mulaney and The Strokes for its October 31 show. It’s both the host and musical guests’ fourth time on the SNL soundstage.

Late Mythbusters host Grant Imahara is being honored with a foundation to empower underserved youth to become active in STEAM fields. Imahara died in July after suffering a brain aneurysm; he was 49 years old.

A+E Networks will present its 2021 Content Showcase: A First Look at 2021 Programming and Talent across multiple days, October 27-29, with multiple viewing options. The slate will encompass more than 1,500 completed hours of original content for History Channel, A&E and Lifetime. Tim Allen, Laurence Fishburne, Morgan Freeman, Salt-N-Pepa, Robin Robers, Wendy Williams and others are among the talent headlining an extensive range of premium content from A+E Networks’ prolific production pipeline, which boasts more than 1500 hours of fresh original content. A+E will also reference its corporate social responsibility initiatives across its platforms.

TV producer Shonda Rhimes will be in the spotlight at the third annual Girl Up #GirlHero Awards, alongside #MeToo Founder Tarana Burke and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta. The virtual event is slated for noon on Thursday, October 29; Nigel Barker will host.

HBO Latino, in partnership with the New York Latino Film Festival, announced the second annual Latino Stand-Up! national competition. Competition aims to support emerging talent and increase representation of Latino voices in comedy. The top five comedians will perform, and a winner will be chosen at a virtual event in early December.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

New York Undercover, the groundbreaking ‘90s Dick Wolf cop drama, is headed back to the screen via NBCU’s Peacock. The streamer is negotiating to launch a reboot of the series, helmed by The Chi showrunner Ayanna Floyd Davis, Wolf and Universal Television. New iteration picks up two decades after the original and will reflect current times.

A miniseries is in the making from filmmaker Ariel Vromen (The Iceman) about former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995. The Leader will be a six-part series adapted from the book “The Rabin Memoirs,” co-authored by Rabin and journalist Dov Goldstein. Vromen will write and direct the show, which will include material based on previously unseen archival footage.

More-ish: ABC gave a six-ep back order to its still-hot comedy Black-ish, bringing the order for the show to 21 episodes, with potential for more. Back order came two days after the seventh season premiere of the series.

Scenes From A Marriage, the HBO limited series adaptation of the Ingmar Bergman miniseries, will reunite Jessica Chastain with Oscar Isaac, after Chastain stepped in to fill the lead role vacated by Michelle Williams. From Our Boys and The Affair co-creator Hagai Levi, Media Res and Endeavor Content, series will be written and directed by Lev and revisit the show’s iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire and monogamy.

More anime programming is headed to Netflix via four new deals with content creators in Japan and Korea. Japan’s NAZ, Science SARU and MAPPA, and Korea’s Studio Mir are on board, greatly expanding the streaming company’s content deals in the two countries. Original anime productions under the existing partnerships include Altered Carbon: Resleeved (Anima) and Dragon’s Dogma (Sublimation).

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

First Person, the first Snap original series to be filmed with Snapchat Spectacles, debuted over the weekend. Twelve-ep docuseries shows the world through the eyes of young people creating positive change as they fight to protect our planet. It’s produced by Yusuf Omar and Hashtag Our Stories and sponsored by Verizon.

Nickelodeon’s hidden camera prank series The Substitute is heading back for season 2 on Saturday, October 31 at 9p. Mexican social media star Juanpa Zurita hosts the second run, which will feature appearances by Ariel Martin, Chloe Kim and Chris Paul. The Substitute features celebrities who are transformed by a team of Hollywood special effects artists to go undercover as a substitute, surprising unsuspecting kids in schools, camps and other locales.

Michael Strahan and Constance Schwartz-Morini are the exec producers behind HBO’s four-part docuseries The Cost of Winning, which debuts Tuesday November 10. The story of the St. Frances Academy Panthers football program in Baltimore is a tale of possibility, perseverance and leadership in the face of adversity.

New content is on the front burner at Cooking Channel. The season premiere of Yum and Yummer drops Sunday, November 8 at 10p, On Mondays at 9p, Andrew Zimmern reveals his fave foods, places and experiences in The Zimmern List, followed at 10p by Zimmern-starring Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations. Food Paradise is on tap Wednesdays at 9p, and Sundays at 9p, Noah Cappe takes viewers around the world for Carnival Eats.

Over at sister Food Network, holiday season kicks off early with host Raven-Symone-hosted Holiday Wars on Sunday, November 1 at 8p. On November 2 at 9p a new season of Holiday Baking returns, followed November 8 by the premiere of Kids Baking Championship: Season’s Sweetest. New series Candy Land drops November 15. Daytime fare includes Turkey Day Sunny’s Way, bowing November 14, and Thanksiving-themed eps of Barefoot Contessa, Delicious Miss Brown, Girl Meets Farm and more are teed up.

Netflix dropped a trailer for seasonal romcom series Dash & Lily, which premieres Tuesday, November 10. Created and exec-produced by show runner Joe Tracz, series follows the whirlwind romance of cynical Dash and optimistic Lily, who trade dares, dreams and desires in a notebook they pass back and forth at locations all across NYC… The streamer also gave a preview of WWII animated series The Liberator, from Jeb Stuart, which bows on Veteran’s Day, Wednesday, November 11.

The Dakota boys, Fred and Dustin Hurt, battle it out against mother nature in a new season of Gold Rush: White Water, premiering Friday, November 13 at 9p on Discovery Channel. A new season of The Dirt, the after show of Gold Rush hosted by Christo Doyle, will premiere immediately after at 10p.

Streaming net Crackle announced new original and exclusive series and movies to debut in November. Among them: original series Breaking Beauty and AVOD exclusive feature Blood and Money, which bow on Thursday, November 19, and original series Heroes of Lucha Libre, which premieres Wednesday, November 25.

COMING UP

The Biebs is back on YouTube. Half-hour documentary special Justin Bieber: Next Chapter, will debut on the platform October 30. Special follows the 10-ep docuseries Justin Bieber: Seasons, which debuted in February and was the biggest YouTube Originals debut to date, with more than 32 million views in its first seven days.

Once Upon a Snowman, starring Frozen sidekick Olaf, is available this week on Disney+. Directed by Trent Correy (animation supervisor, “Olaf” in “Frozen 2”), special explores the previously untold origins of the summer-loving snowman, and follows Olaf’s first steps.

Shudder released the trailer and key images for A Creepshow Animated Special, premiering on the horror streaming service Thursday, October 29 at 12:01a. Special features two stories—Survivor Type and Twittering from the Circus of the Dead—directed by Creepshow showrunner Greg Nicotero, with animation by Octopie animation studio.

Kevin Hart’s Laugh Out Loud teamed with actor/comedian Affion Crockett to launch the comedy brand’s first original hourlong stand-up special, Affion Crockett: Mirror II Society. Debuting Friday, November 13 across the LOL network of streaming services, special will be heralded by a multicity drive-in tour in LA and Atlanta, where fans can view the show followed by a screening of a Black comedy film.

Investigation Discovery exposes the tragedy of one family’s experience with the juvenile criminal justice system in The Witmans, premiering Tuesday, December 1 at 9p. Doc explores the events that unfolded in 1998, when 13-year-old Greg Witman was murdered and his older brother was taken into custody.

Oxygen will debut two-hour Pulse Films and BuzzFeed Studios special The Case Died With Her on Sunday, December 6 at 7p. Legal commentator and former prosecutor Loni Coombs dives into the shocking case of Emilie Morris, a young woman who met a tragic and mysterious death before she was due for a court appearance.

TECH TALK

Redbox’s free live TV service added channels including Vevo and Xbox One, bringing its total channel tally to more than 75. Sam Goldwyn Channel, Johnny Carson, Glamour, Bob Ross, Pocket.watch, Dust Channel and Glory Kickboxing are also now in the lineup mix.

New entertainment-analytics startup Vody engages a proprietary system that uses machine-learning to crawl through the Internet and curate a database of programming. Launched by co-CEOs Stephanie Horbaczewski and Jeremy Houghton, both previously at YouTube network StyleHaul, the company’s software is designed to to plug into streaming services to provide more accurate recommendations.

Now that it’s called it quits, Quibi has tapped LionTree to manage in an advisory capacity the process of selling the assets of the Jeffrey Katzenberg-founded company.

Lili Taylor (Perry Mason), Tamara Podemski (Four Sheets to the Wind) and Tom Pelphrey (Ozark) are in as series regulars opposite Josh Brolin in Amazon’s mystery drama Outer Range.

Telemundo’s 2020 Billboard Latin Music Awards generated 45.9 million engagements across Telemundo-owned platforms, plus an additional 38 million engagements across other platforms. The show netted 39.6 million total views and delivered 1.6M total viewers and 668,000 in the A18-49 demo, according to Nielsen.

HGTV series Help! I Wrecked My House delivered a double-digit ratings gain for its debut season, resulting in 62 percent lift over year-ago levels in the 8-9p time slot on Saturdays. Series attracted more than 16 million total viewers and delivered a .57 Live Plus Three-Day rating among the A25-54 demo.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nina Wolarsky will exit her post as VP, original series – drama at Netflix. Wolarsky, who leaves the streaming service in November, joined in 2012.

HBO Max restructured its feature film programming unit WarnerMax. The streaming film label, created in February, will now be solely run by studio chief Toby Emmerich. WarnerMedia EVP, original films, Jessie Henderson is departing the company. Nikki Ramey, SVP, original feature films at HBO Max, is segueing over to Warner label New Line Cinema.

First Look Media’s Topic Studios appointed Alysse Bezahler as SVP of production and Christine Connor as VP of nonfiction. Bezahler previously was SVP, head of production at AMC Studios; Connor most recently launched XCON Productions in 2010 and created shows including Final Witness and A Crime To Remember.

Damian Kavanagh, managing director of Tiger Aspect, producer of BBC One’s Peaky Blinders and Netflix’s Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father, is stepping down after nearly two years. The departure follows the the acquisition of Tiger Aspect’s parent company Endemol Shine by Banijay.

Lauren Townsend is exiting her role as EVP of communications at Starz after more than two years at the Lionsgate-owned network.

IN MEMORIAM

William Blinn, the Emmy-winning screenwriter who created Starsky & Hutch and developed Eight Is Enough, died last Thursday (October 22) at age 83. Blinn, who co-wrote Prince film Purple Rain, won statuettes for his work on groundbreaking 1977 miniseries Roots and for Brian’s Song in 1971. During his four-decade career he also wrote for Bonanza and created Pensacola: Wings of Gold.
