IN THE NEWS
CBS will keep on riding the success of Paramount Network hit “Yellowstone.” Since makings its broadcast debut on September 17, nearly 21.6 million viewers have tuned in to at least one episode of the Western drama, with 52% new to the series. The show has averaged 5.49 million viewers per episode and ranked as the #1 primetime entertainment program every Sunday night. So, on October 29, the week after the freshman season wraps, season two kicks off.
As social media platforms are being slammed for spreading fake news amid the Gaza crisis, YouTube is rolling out a news coverage feed curated from what it deems are trusted sources. “The news watch page will pull together content from authoritative sources across video on demand, live streams, podcasts, and Shorts, allowing viewers to deep dive and explore multiple sources and angles,” said YouTube in a blog post. “We believe this updated news experience will help viewers access a range of credible and diverse voices when they want to dive into a news topic.” YouTube is also launching a “Shorts Innovation Program for News,” aimed at strengthening the use of short-form video in news organizations.
Is streaming penetration slowing down? Forty-nine percent of US households streamed platforms without pay TV in 3Q23 and 33% streamed with pay TV, versus 48% and 36% the second quarter. That’s according to new data from HarrisX/MoffettNathanson Research, which also found non-streamers made up 18% of homes, up from 17%. The number of streaming subscriptions has declined, to 3.7 from 3.8.
Not slowing down is FAST penetration, which grew 7% in 3Q23, with 47% of US households using a FAST service each week, according to a report from Kantar’s Entertainment on Demand. With delays in fresh programming due to the writers’ strike, viewers are more price-sensitive, noted Hannah Avery, consumer insights director at Kantar, who pointed to a slowdown in Peacock’s growth after a price increase as one example. “In Q3, pricing strategies had a profound impact on subscriber retention in the US streaming market,” said Avery. “Peacock’s July price hike resulted in immediate market share loss, primarily due to subscribers looking to save money.”
SAG-AFTRA delegates elected eight national vice presidents, including Linda Powell as executive vice president, at the union’s National Convention 2023 (theme: “Future Forward Union Power”). But with bargaining talks with the AMPTP resuming tomorrow, some elements of the event were postponed. “While it’s disappointing to have to adjourn the convention early, the Negotiating Committee must immediately get back to the hard work of preparing to secure a fair contract,” said SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher.

With MLB’s new rules emphasizing shorter games and more on-field action, viewership in the league’s 25 core markets has exceeded that of those markets’ top primetime shows by 125%, according SponsorUnited. The rule changes also appear to have helped lead to the net increase of 135 sponsorship deals league wide over last season. “MLB’s strategic rule adjustments have not only reinvigorated the spirit of the game, but they’ve also bolstered its marketability,” said Bob Lynch, founder and CEO of SponsorUnited. “As evident by the impressive surge in sponsorships, brands recognize the newfound energy and widespread appeal of the faster-paced, action-packed games.”
