HBO and HBO Max counted 45.2 million US subscribers in 2Q21, down from the 47 million combined subs WarnerMedia reported for the second quarter, reflecting the HBO option’s removal from Amazon Channels. Globally, subscriptions hit 69.4 million, up 12.5% year over year. AT&T’s 3Q21 results topped Wall Street expectations, with total revenue of $39.9 billion.
Speaking at AT&T’s earnings call, AT&T CEO John Stankey said the company’s sale of WarnerMedia to Discovery is proceeding smoothly. “We are moving through the steps with the various regulatory agencies in the US and outside the US,” he said. “Those processes are moving along at the pace we would have expected and we don’t see any surprises.”
CBS gave a full season order to freshman comedy “Ghosts,” which is averaging about 8 million total viewers in Live+7 data. “We’re thrilled this spirited new comedy has struck a chord with viewers and critics alike and is off to a great start,” said Thom Sherman, Senior Executive VP Programming at CBS Entertainment. “We’ve loved ‘Ghosts’ since day one.”
Apple TV+ picked up seasons three and four of sitcom “Mythic Quest.” “Just like critics and audiences all over the world, we fell in love with Rob and his team’s sharp writing and full-of-heart, relatable characters that make up the world of ‘Mythic Quest,’” said Matt Cherniss, Head of Programming for Apple TV+.
TV or not TV: One-third of consumers report they’ll watch more TV via free streaming services over the next six months, and one-third also reported they will watch more live TV, according to the 2021 Holiday Consumer Insights Report from Tremor Video. Other insights include:
· AVOD services like Tubi and Pluto are being used at similar rates to some popular new SVOD services like HBO Max
· Nearly 50% of consumers age 35-44 reported that TV ads were the most influential type of media in their holiday shopping decision making

Season two of “Power Rangers Dino Fury,” the 29th season of the franchise from Entertainment One and Hasbro, is moving to Netflix. The show has aired on Nickelodeon since 2011.
Former president Donald Trump announced he is launching a media company, Trump Media & Technology Group, which will have its own social media platform, dubbed TRUTH Social. “We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American President has been silenced,” said Trump, who was banned from major social media platforms after the January 6 insurrection. TRUTH Social’s terms of service bar users from statements that “disparage, tarnish, or otherwise harm, in our opinion, us and/or the Site.” It also forbids users from using “excessive capital letters.” Trump Media & Technology Group would be formed by joining with SPAC Digital World Acquisition Corp. pending regulatory and stockholder approval.
However, before Trump’s site is up and running come rumblings of a possible lawsuit. After screenshots of Truth Social’s open-source code revealed an apparent violation of Mastodon’s requirement that customers share the code and copies of the general product license to users, Mastodon founder Eugen Rochko told Talking Points Memo, “I do intend to seek legal counsel.”

Fresh off of “Sopranos” sequel film “The Many Saints of Newark,” Michael Gandolfini has joined the cast of Paramount+ series “The Offer,” about the making of “The Godfather.” Gandolfini will play a businessman trying to buy Paramount. Snap stock plummeted over 25% in extended trading on Thursday after the company reported a net loss of $71.9 million, or 5 cents a share (down from a loss of $199.8 million, or 14 cents a share a year ago). Snap blamed privacy changes at Apple for inhibiting its ability to measure its digital advertising. “Our advertising business was disrupted by changes to iOS ad tracking that were broadly rolled out by Apple in June and July,” the company reported. “Broadly speaking, these changes have upended many of the industry norms and advertiser behaviors that were built on IDFA (Apple’s unique device identifier for advertising) over the past decade.” Global supply chain disruptions and labor shortages that caused companies to scale back on ad spend didn’t help either, noted the company.
Facebook’s Oversight Board has accused the company of withholding information about its XCheck moderation system, a platform used to apply moderation rules to celebrities and VIPs. “Facebook has not been fully forthcoming with the Board on its ‘cross-check’ system, which the company uses to review content decisions relating to high-profile users,” the Board said in its Transparency Report. “Facebook is answering most of the Board’s questions, but not all of them.” The board started investigating the XCheck system last month, after The Wall Street Journal reported many VIP users abuse it.
Merkle announced a new partnership with TransUnion through which Merkle’s identity resolution and data platform Merkury will leverage TransUnion’s TruAudience Data Marketplace, formerly Tru Optik, to enable people-based audience activation in CTV. The integration of Merkury with TruAudience Data Marketplace enables brands to leverage first- and third-party data and reach advanced audiences across CTV campaigns.

Roku’s distribution deal for the YouTube main app expires December 9, and Roku warned customers in a blog post that “the threat remains that Google may remove YouTube TV” from the platform. The sticking point isn’t money, said Roku, but rather control of data and the search function. “For Roku, this is about maintaining our independence, protecting our customers, and ensuring healthy competition in the streaming industry that benefits millions of consumers,” said the company blog.
Discovery+ is now available for purchase on Cox Contour 2 and the Contour Stream Player. “The launch of discovery+ on Contour reinforces our longstanding relationship with Cox and ensures that their customers will be able to access all of Discovery’s much-loved shows, brands and personalities,” said Gabriel Sauerhoff, SVP, Digital Distribution and Commercial Partnerships at Discovery, Inc.

Disabled American Veterans and Sinclair Broadcast Group announced the launch of the “Sinclair Cares: Supporting All Veterans” partnership. Sinclair will encourage viewers to volunteer or donate to support veterans. The campaign will run through November 12 to coincide with the celebration of Veterans Day on November 11.
