As season 75 begins, The NBA is now in the crypto business. On Tuesday, the league signed a multiyear agreement with United States-based crypto exchange platform Coinbase. Coinbase will have league-level rights with not only the NBA, but also the WNBA, NBA G League, NBA 2K League, and USA Basketball.

“Coinbase is a natural fit as the NBA’s first-ever partner in this thriving category,” said Kerry Tatlock, NBA senior vice president of global marketing partnerships and media. “We look forward to collaborating with Coinbase to provide fans with new ways to engage with the league and each other, while also enhancing the experience for fans who are already Coinbase users.”

Coinbase will gain brand presence during nationally televised games, and become a presenting partner of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup and for USA Basketball men’s and women’s national team exhibition tours, and serve as a partner of NBA G League Ignite.

PROGRAMMING

ESPN and the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) announced a multi-year, multi-platform media rights agreement, enhancing ESPN’s college sports portfolio and coverage of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) with the addition of the conference’s men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. ESPNU will carry both CIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship Games, while all 22 games of both tournaments will be available on an ESPN platform through at least 2024.

Danica Patrick will join the Sky Sports broadcast team for next weekend’s United States Grand Prix. The former IndyCar and NASCAR driver — the most successful female driver in American open-wheel history — retired from competition in 2018 but has worked on NBC’s coverage of the Indy 500, among other events, and will be a pundit at her first F1 race in Austin.

FS1 announced it will air USWNT star Carli Lloyd’s final match on Oct. 26 from Allianz Field when the USA meets Korea Republic.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football experienced year-over-year gains for the fourth consecutive week (Weeks 3 through 6), as 12.6 million viewers (ESPN and ESPN Deportes) watched the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans (October 18, 8 p.m. ET). The Bills-Titans audience 12,528,000 (ESPN only) was up 6% over the Dallas Cowboys’ Week 6 appearance in 2020, when they hosted the Cardinals (11,831,000 viewers), and is also the second-most-viewed Week 6 game since the 2015 season.

NBC Sports’ Premier League Mornings Live fan fest heads to the West Coast for the first time, with a weekend of activity in Los Angeles, Calif., this Saturday, and Sunday. The Washington Wizards expanded their presence in Israel by striking a deal with Israeli-based renewable energy company Energix. As an official partner, Energix will have in-arena television network advertisements, Wizards courtside LED rotational and LED basket stanchion signage. Since the arrival of Israeli forward Deni Avdija in 2020, the Wizards have increased their footprint in Israel by developing a team website in Hebrew and the NBA’s first Israeli Instagram and Twitter accounts.

The Los Angeles Lakers have become the latest NBA franchise to sign blockchain provider Socios.com as a sponsor. The fan-centered sponsorship with the Chiliz-owned brand will focus, in particular, on social media-based interactions.

Google’s Pixel phone was named as the first presenting sponsor of the NBA Playoffs, with Google expanding an earlier WNBA deal with expansive rights across the NBA, G League and 2K League.
