IN THE NEWS

The upcoming seventh season of Netflix dramedy Orange Is the New Black will be its last. The streaming service announced the news on Twitter with the warning, “This may make you cry.”

ABC gave a full season order to Single Parents. The new Wednesday comedy is averaging 5.6 million viewers and a 1.6/7 Live+3 rating among A18-49.

The premiere of global talent competition The World’s Best gets the prime post-Super Bowl slot on CBS on Sunday, February 3 at 10p(ish). Exec producer James Corden hosts, with judges Drew Barrymore, RuPaul Charles and Faith Hill.

More cable subscribers would cut the cord if they knew they could still get live programming, according to a report, “Inside the Minds of Cord-Cutters and Cable-Keepers,” from Telaria and Adobe. The primary reason people keep the cord is the perception that only a linear connection can deliver live television content (42%), said the report. The second most common reason was the desire to have a lot of channels (34%), and the third was the fear of losing favorite networks (32%). 55% of cable subscribers found cord-cutting options confusing.

Animated series Animals was canceled after three seasons on HBO. The comedy, centered on NYC natives like rats and pigeons, was averaging 185,000 viewers, down 20% from season two.

A shareholder initiative to remove Mark Zuckerberg as chairman of the board of Facebook won the backing of the state treasurers of Rhode Island, Illinois and Pennsylvania, as well as the New York City comptroller, reports the Wall Street Journal. “Facebook plays an outsized role in our society and our economy. They have a social and financial responsibility to be transparent – that’s why we’re demanding independence and accountability in the company’s boardroom,” said NYC comptroller Scott Stringer. Of course, Zuckerberg would have to vote to oust himself for the initiative to work, since he has the majority of the voting power.

Oral arguments in the case of the United States v. AT&T begin Thursday, December 6. In June, a U.S. District Court judge rejected the DOJ’s claim that AT&T’s $79 billion deal for Time Warner was anti-competitive, after which AT&T closed the deal and rebranded Time Warner as WarnerMedia.

In a letter to the heads of the FCC and Federal Trade Commission, Univision accused Dish of falsely advertising the availability to the public of Univision, UniMas and Galavision, after the nets went dark on Dish at the end of June as the result of a retrans dispute. Dish responded by saying the mistake was inadvertent and has been corrected. Univision’s letter follows a lawsuit filed Friday.

“The negotiations will be spirited,” said CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus about renewal negotiations for CBS’s NFL deal – but he doesn’t think FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon Netflix and Google) will sink their teeth too deeply into football. Speaking at the NAB Show New York, McManus said one reason sports are still so popular is they are available for free on broadcast, and moving them to a platform without the reach of broadcast “might be a big risk for the NFL.”

Sesame Street’s Big Bird is flying the coop. Puppeteer Caroll Spinney, who has played Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch since the children’s show’s debut in 1969, is retiring. “Big Bird brought me so many places, opened my mind and nurtured my soul,” Spinney said. “And I plan to be an ambassador for Sesame Workshop for many years to come. After all, we’re a family!” Count Von Count Matt Vogel will add Big Bird to his Sesame Street duties, while Eric Jacobson (Grover, Bert and Guy Smiley) will take on Oscar the Grouch.

TV networks may be involved with podcasts, but they should “consider getting in the game earlier,” says Donald Albright, Tenderfoot TV president. “Networks are getting an active listening audience when they make a deal with the podcast, and that built-in fan base can be a real value that you don’t always get when developing a new show. There is also a huge market for branded content that networks can advantage of.” For more from Albright, check out Cynsiders.

Spoiler alert for The Conners: Showrunner Bruce Helford wrote in a column for the Hollywood Reporter about– again, spoiler alert– ending Roseanne Conner’s life with an opioid overdose, “We firmly decided against anything cowardly or far-fetched, anything that would make the fierce matriarch of the Conners seem pathetic or debased.” Roseanne Barr did not approve of the ABC spin-off premise. In a joint statement with her rabbi after the show, she called the plot point “an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show.”

Sounds obvious, but advertisers shouldn’t wait until Black Friday to make their digital move – while the Click-Through-Rate in November is 125% higher than the average of the rest of the year, the highest performing CTR in 2017 occurred between November 1 and November 12.
