“Black-ish” co-showrunner Kenny Smith is moving from Disney to NBCUniversal. Smith, who was previously under a three-year deal at ABC Studios, has inked an overall deal with Universal Television to develop and produce projects across multiple platforms. Smith recently joined Universal Television and NBC’s comedy series “Kenan” as co-showrunner alongside David Capse.

Primetime TV is back, according to a study of TV ad trends from iSpot.tv. A 3Q21 wrap-up showed broadcast TV ad impressions increased 39.5% compared to 2020 and were up 16% compared to 2019. Theatrical releases began bouncing back in Q3 with ad impressions up 5x and spend up 7x (though both impressions and spend are still down 10% compared to the same time in 2019).

The Walt Disney Company secured a five-year rights agreement for ESPN to present a new Monday night Wild Card game, continuing through 2025. The inaugural NFL Wild Card game will be played on January 17, 2022 at 8:15p, marking the grand finale of the NFL’s Super Wild Card Weekend

The Grammy Museum and the National Museum of African Music present the 1st Annual Rosedale Summit: Country’s Reclamation & Promising Future on Monday, November 8, honoring Dr. Cleve Francis and featuring Frankie Staton, Rissi Palmer and more. The event will be comprised of a series of performances and conversations that celebrate and recognize the art of BIPOC country musicians.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Netflix has renewed “You” for a fourth season. The news comes just ahead of the drama’s third season premiere on Friday. Casting for the show’s next installment will be announced at a later date.

Jason Segel is set to headline “Shrinking,” a 10-episode comedy series ordered by Apple TV+. Segel will serve as writer and executive producer alongside “Ted Lasso” co-creator Bill Lawrence and writer/co-star Brett Goldstein. “Shrinking” follows a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell clients exactly what he thinks.

Also getting a greenlight for a second season is “The Challenge: All Stars” from Paramount+. The show is set to drop on Thursday, November 11 and will welcome back 24 cast members from the show’s past – including players how haven’t competed in over 20 years. TJ Lavin is on board to host.

Fox has greenlit “Dirt Girls.” The animated comedy series hails from Victoria Vincent (“We the People,” “A Dog That Smokes Weed”) and Fox Entertainment’s Bento Box Entertainment. Witten and executive produced by Vincent, it tells the story of two unsupervised kid sisters who find depraved ways to keep themselves entertained.

Upcoming gaming entertainment streaming platform Binge has added a live-action series adaptation of Nightdive Studios’ “System Shock” to its slate of original programming. Nightdive’s Stephen Kick and Larry Kuperman will serve as executive producers, while Binge’s Chief Content Officer Allan Ungar will produce.

Pantaya inked a deal with Fremantle and Fabula to develop eight new series, as it ramps up production of original content, according to Deadline. The companies previously collaborated on the Spanish language series “Senorita 89” and “El Refugio.”

David Fincher and Netflix are reteaming on a new project: the noir docuseries “Voir.” The announcement was made on the @NetflixFilm Twitter account, noting that Fincher will executive produce the docuseries of visual essays celebrating cinemas. “Voir” is set to premiere at AFI Fest, which begins on November 10.

NBA champ Serge Ibaka’s story is being developed into an animated kids’ series. Ibaka, the first player from the Republic of Congo to enter the NBA draft, struck a deal with Studio71 through his production company Ouenze Entertainment. “Overcoming” (wt) will showcase some the worlds greatest athletes and the biggest challenges of their lives outside of sports.

Octavio Pisano will be getting more airtime on “Law & Order: SVU.” The actor, who portrays Detective Joe Velasco, has been upped to series regular.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“Born Mucky” premieres on Animal Planet on Saturday, October 16 at 10p.The series captures the reality of life for modern-day farmers.

“The Beatles: Get Back” rolls out on Disney+ over three days beginning Thursday, November 25. The three-part original docuseries was made from never-before-seen, restored footage of John, Paul, George and Ringo.

Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” revival returns with its second season on Wednesday, November 24. The premiere episode will reunite original cast members Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley-Lauren, Mario Lopez and Lark Voorhies.

Apple TV+ introduces “Harriet the Spy” on Friday, November 19. Beanie Feldstein and Jane Lynch will lead the voice cast in the first animated adaptation of the children’s novel.

Season 2 of Netflix’s “Gentefied” premieres Wednesday, November 10. The Morales cousins will be back fighting to keep their grandfather from being deported back to Mexico.

MSNBC Films presents Peacock Original film “Civil War” on Sunday, October 24 at 10p on MSNBC. The feature doc takes a look at how Americans portray the story of their Civil War.

Food Network’s first scripted feature, “Candy Coated Christmas,” bows Friday November 19 on Discovery+. The movie stars Molly McCook (“Last Man Standing”) as a Beverly Hills marketing executive whose life takes an unexpected turn when she takes a business trip to the town of Peppermint Hallow.

Rewind TV will air an all-day marathon of “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch” on Sunday, October 31 beginning at 5a. All six of the series’ Halloween episodes will play between 8p and 11p.

TECH TALK

Facebook will begin removing “severe sexualizing content” targeted at public figures on Facebook and Instagram an update to its bullying and harassment policies. Facebook already removes attacks on public figures that encompass a range of harms, but will now specifically remove content, profiles, pages, groups or events dedicated to sexualizing a public figure; derogatory, sexualized photoshopped images and drawings; and attacks through “negative Physical descriptions” that are tagged to, mention or are posted on a public figure’s account.

Viacom CBS struck a partnership with NFT startup Recur to create a fan-focused platform that will feature the company’s IP and franchises. It’s set to debut in spring 2022 and will allow consumers to buy, trade and collect NFTs as digital products and collectibles.

ACTIVATIONS

HBO Max’s “Love Life,” in partnership with dating app BLK and events platform Black Restaurant Week, is hosting Love Life Date Night. The series of activations in four major cities celebrates the Season 2 premiere of the series. Fans will have the opportunity to treat their date to a romantic evening in eight Black-owned restaurants in New York, Los Angeles, Detroit and Atlanta.

NBCUniversal Television and Streaming rolled out an extensive marketing campaign to engage fans of the Child’s Play franchise, as it prepared for the October 12 launch of “Chucky” on USA and SYFY. GOING GLOBAL

Studiocanal closed a deal with RTI Mediaset for “Dos Vidas.” The agreement includes 255 episodes of the daily Spanish drama series. In addition, Studiocanal has
regained distribution rights to more than 200 of its premium feature film titles, previously distributed by NBCUniversal, beginning January 2022.

Banjay Factory is developing a new dating show in sign language for SVT1. Produced by Delta Studios, “Sexy Hands” focuses on deaf singletons and their hearing allies.

All3Media International added another new format adaptation to its “Snackmasters” lineup. Belgian broadcaster RTL TVI has launched its own local version of the Optomen Television series. “Snackmasters, la recette secrete” features top chefs battling it out to recreate the nation’s favorite snacks.

Jukin Media is expanding its presence in the Asia Pacific region by hiring Manu Sanghi as Senior Commercial Director, APAC to establish its base of operations in Singapore. Sanghi will be responsible for fueling growth in the region across multiple lines of business including Jukin’s presence on CTV.
