10/10/19: Activision Blizzard formally announced the Call of Duty League plans for 2020

Activision Blizzard formally opened the doors to the Call of Duty League and its branding elements, in addition to mapping out plans for the league’s inaugural season next year. The series will be played exclusively on PlayStation 4 and dangle a total prize pool of over $6 million for year one, concluding with the Call of Duty League Championship. The season, which saw teams purchase city-based franchises, will have the CoD League travel “from city to city,” according to the announcement, with play beginning in 2020 and featuring 5v5 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiple player matches.
 
COMPETITION AND VENUES

 
ESL One New York reports that its return to the Barclays Center on September 28-29 drew an average audience per minute of 160,000 with a peak of 420,000. The tournament clocked in over 6.5 Million watched hours and a total of over 15 Million sessions, even topping ESL One Cologne’s viewership figures for the final day. “New York delivered once again for the fourth consecutive year running. The crowd in Barclays Center created an incredible, electric atmosphere, propelling the teams to maximum performances and a showcase of Counter-Strike,” said Ulrich Schulze, SVP Product at ESL. “We look forward to what the future holds for this tournament. Looking toward the future, we are very excited to have kicked off the new ESL Pro Tour with a special announcement here in New York, introducing our very own vision for esports: create a world where everybody can be somebody, and that was exactly the spirit that could already be felt this weekend.”
 
Meanwhile, Blizzard is reporting year-to-year increases on multiple fronts for the second Overwatch League Grand Finals, held in Philadelphia on Sunday, announcing that the Shock’s win reached an audience of 1.1 million average viewers worldwide, up 16% over the 2018 event. Partnering with Nielsen, the company is using an average minute audience model and includes viewership numbers from digital platforms such as Twitch and linear broadcaster ABC. Stateside, the average AMA number for OWL’s regular season was 95,000 viewers, while the Grand Finals brought in 472,000 watchers, up 41%, with a 132,000 in the 18-34 demo; the regular season number is up 34% over 2018.
 
The League of Legends 2019 World Championships will see Estars offer up $2,250,000 in free to play contests to fans. Contenders go head-to-head against the community to test their knowledge of professional League of Legends, including predicting the outcomes and placements of Group and Knockout stages. Contests kick off today at 9a.
 
The Riot Scholastic Association of America detailed plans for the 2020 College League of Legends Season after 354 schools participated in the 2019 season. The governing body of College League of Legends announced that the new year will see the championship extend in size to a 32-school bracket while team rosters will grow from six players to ten to meet the growing roster depth and needs of students with the season launching in January. “As the longest standing college championship in esports, we aspire to make League of Legends an inclusive, generational, college sport,” said Michael Sherman, Head of College at the RSAA. “This year’s season has the benefit of building on six years of expertise and learnings in the space and is the result of continued effort and enthusiasm from college students and administrators across North America.”
 
DreamHack will return to Atlanta with Madden in mind for year three of DreamHack Atlanta, running Nov. 15-17. This year will see the Madden NFL 20 Tournament take place over the course of the three-day festival and is open for any competitor over the age of 16 attending the festival. “We love the city of Atlanta and its passion for esports and traditional sports. Bringing our Madden NFL 20 tournament with us to the home of the Atlanta Falcons is going to make this an epic event,” said DreamHack Co-CEO Marcus Lindmark. “This event was tremendous when we brought it to Dallas, and we expect just as much, if not more, excitement in Atlanta.”
 
Electronic Arts and FIFA rolled out plans for the launch of the EA Sports FIFA 20 Global Series on The Road to the FIFA eWorld Cup, where millions will compete in the nine-month competition that offer a prize pool topping $3 million. The series continues to expand as more than 20 of the world’s top football leagues will run local events for residents of each nation. League partners include the Premier League, Australian A-League, Austrian Bundesliga, Bundesliga, Danish Superliga, LaLiga, LFP, Maltese Premier League, Norwegian Elite Serien, Polish Ekstraklasa, Saudi Professional League, Ukrainian Premier League and more. The UEFA eChampions League also returns as EA Sports FIFA 20 Global Series stars will represent the top clubs in the world.
 
Subsequently, the Premier League and EA announced the return of ePremier League for a second season. Registration for this year’s tournament opens on Nov. 4 and on Dec. 2, competitors for all 20 Premier League clubs will battle it out over four months through online qualification and club playoffs to reach the ePL Finals in March 2020. Brent Koning, FIFA Competitive Gaming Commissioner, said: “The Premier League’s global reach combined with the worldwide player base of EA SPORTS FIFA sets the ePremier League up to be one of the most popular esports tournaments across the industry. Esports drives increased engagement with traditional sport and this ePremier League partnership now gives fans an opportunity to represent or cheer for their favorite club on both the traditional and virtual pitch.”
 
DreamHack is also partnering with Dutch League, Eredivisie as partners for the Dutch FIFA League, eDivisie, which will serve as the Official League qualifying tournament for the EA SPORTS FIFA Global Series. In the eDivisie, EA SPORTS FIFA 20 players representing the clubs will battle for the virtual championship in FIFA Ultimate Team.
 
Gaming and esports lifestyle tour Player Omega locked in a partnership with Super League Gaming to provide esports players, fans and local organizers with monthly events in each market where Player Omega debuts in 2020. Super League also will be participating in Player Omega’s inaugural event on November 9-10 in Pomona, CA. At the November event, Super League will host one of the participatory zones, offering programming for Fortnite, League of Legends and Minecraft players. For 2020, Player Omega has confirmed stops in Minneapolis, Niagara Falls, NY, Norwich, CT, Salt Lake City and Philadelphia, with tour dates to be announced in the coming weeks. Super League will recreate its Player Omega experience on a recurring basis in each market.
 
Simon is forming a duo with Allied Esports to launch the national esports tournament, The Simon Cup. The program features a Fortnite competition, appearances by FaZe Clan, online qualifiers, regional finals and gaming festivals in New York and Los Angeles, and weekly prizes and giveaways. The tournament will conclude on Nov. 23 with a Grand Final at HyperX Esports Arena Las Vegas.
 
Toronto Maple Leafs and WorldGaming Network are bringing back Leafs Gaming League, an EA SPORTS NHL 20 competition featuring online play and live events for casual and competitive gamers, with Scotiabank signing on as the presenting partner of Leafs Gaming League. “We are proud to offer Toronto’s NHL gaming community a competitive platform with Season Two of Leafs Gaming League in partnership with WorldGaming Network,” said Shane Talbot, Esports Manager, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE). “This season we’re introducing an exciting new league structure with four live tournaments and broadcasts, an even bigger prize pool, and a new matchmaking system powering our online play.”

  • tv is ahead of YouTube Gaming in GVC Market Share: 17.3% of the September live gaming H. Watched were generated on Nimo, that’s nearly 40M more H. Watched than YTG.
  • Twitch is the leader in game streaming: With over half of the total gaming H. Watched, continues to lead without star streamer Ninja. It generated 31 times more H. Watched than Mixer.
  • Gaming consumption is consolidated around market leaders: The Top 4 platforms accounted for a combined 96.4%. This leaves less than 4% of the pie to Mixer, Steam.tv, Cube, and DLive.

Riot also picked up a partnership with Red Bull Energy Drink to serve as the exclusive official energy drink partner for League of Legends global esports events: The World Championship, Mid-Season Invitational, and All-Star Event. The partnership kicks off with the 2019 World Championship and is set to include collaborations and activations such as The Red Bull Player Area; Red Bull for the Pros; broadcast placements; All-Star Event Wild Card Entry; and the All-Star Event After Party.
 
adidas and Electronic Arts revealed the official match ball for the EA SPORTS FIFA 20 Global Series on The Road to the FIFA eWorld Cup. The official match ball will debut on the pitch during a competitive event at the FUT Champions Cup Stage I in November. adidas is the official partner for the EA SPORTS FIFA 20 Global Series. Speaking about the EA SPORTS FIFA 20 Global Series, Global VP of Global Brand Communications Florian Alt said, “At adidas, we believe that sport has the power to change and transform lives – but this is no longer limited to what takes place on the field. With the growth of eSports, we’re seeing a whole new category of athletes emerge, whose game requires a unique set of skills, training and mindset.”
 
Fnatic extended its long-term partnership with Rivalry via a multi-year, six-figure deal to secure their place as the ‘Official Betting Partner’ of the team’s Counter Strike: Global Offensive squad through 2021. Rivalry will have access to global image rights of the players and will work in collaboration with Fnatic to developing engaging and exclusive content to be hosted on the Rivalry community hub which will enhance the experience on the platform.

NASCAR, NBC Sports and iRacing are serving up a special two-hour edition of NASCAR America, which will broadcast the 2019 eNASCAR PEAK Antifreeze iRacing Series championship from the virtual Homestead-Miami Speedway live on Oct. 10 at 5p on NBCSN. The first-ever eNASCAR championship telecast will see the champion take home the largest share of the $100,000 prize pool. The NASCAR America broadcast will mark the first time an official eNASCAR PEAK Antifreeze iRacing Series race has been aired live on national television. In addition, the champion will be flown to Miami for NASCAR’s championship weekend where they will be honored during the pre-race ceremonies for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
 
Following a deal to partner with Reuters Connect, Esportz Entertainment Corp. announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art broadcast studio in Orange County, California with completion targeting the end of the first quarter of 2020. The company plans to produce live and pre-recorded content, streamed through the most popular esports online channels daily, including YouTube, Twitch, Mixer and others.

Complexity Gaming formed an alliance with Extra Life, the gaming-focused peer-to-peer fundraising program of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Through live streams, local hospital visits and more, this partnership allows for Complexity players and streamers to lend support toward fundraising efforts for CMN Hospitals across North America. On Nov. 2, a variety of Complexity’s players and streamers will participate in a celebration around Extra Life to help raise donations and awareness for the charitable needs of children’s hospitals and will also regularly visit and tour their local CMN Hospital.

Lots of debate following the announcement that Hearthstone player Chung “Blitzchung” Ng Wai had been suspended from professional play for a year with his winnings withheld following his statement in support of Hong Kong during his post-match interview on Blizzard’s official livestream. Blizzard’s ruling found that the interview broke a tournament rule which states that, “Engaging in any act that, in Blizzard’s sole discretion, brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image will result in removal from Grandmasters and reduction of the player’s prize total to $0 USD, in addition to other remedies which may be provided for under the Handbook and Blizzard’s Website Terms.”
 
Subsequently, Fortnite developer Epic Games told The Verge that the company will not be banning players or content creators for political speech. “Epic supports everyone’s right to express their views on politics and human rights,” an Epic spokesperson told the site. “We wouldn’t ban or punish a Fortnite player or content creator for speaking on these topics.”
 
Sony confirmed that the next edition of the PlayStation console system will be out in time for Christmas 2020. The console will be called the PlayStation 5. “Since we originally unveiled our next-generation console in April, we know that there’s been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of games will bring,” Sony’s president, Jim Ryan, said in a PS Blog post. “Today I’m proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we’ll be launching in time for holiday 2020.”
 
Five Vectors Inc announced a $1 million seed round, led by BITKRAFT Esports Ventures. The music startup works with up-and-coming artists and produces music tracks targeting gaming audiences and has partnered with esports and gaming companies to create music for Rainbow Six Siege esports, anthems for the SK Gaming’s League of Legends team, soundtracks for Playbrain’s esports initiatives in Japan, as well as other global partnerships. “We are extremely proud to welcome Jens and the BITKRAFT Esports Ventures family as an investor in Five Vectors,” said Andres Lauer, CEO and co-founder of Five Vectors Inc. “We see a powerful overlap between music and gaming and created Five Vectors to fill the gap in the industry by providing customized music solutions for the global gaming audience.
 
In addition, META Games, creator of esports-themed mobile games, raised $2 million in seed funding, led by BITKRAFT Esports Ventures with participation from Everblue Management, Crest Capital, and Klaas Kersting, among others. The new funding will be used to complete game development on META Games’ upcoming mobile game RIVALS, a manager game based on MOBA esports, and to begin development on future mobile games for esports fans.
 
A slew of Fortnite pros are teaming up to launch the Fortnite Professional Players Association, designed to foster a better relationship with Epic Games. The new org unveiled a 16-person board of members, consisting of eight North American players as well as eight European pros, including Fortnite World Cup champions Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf and David “Aqua” Wang and is looking to serve as “an independent world-wide collective of professional Fortnite players, meant to provide us a professional platform to voice our opinions on the future of the competitive scene of Fortnite, so that we may have the most productive dialogue possible with the developers.”
 
Media and esports agency Big Block released a full economic impact report from their client’s recent event The Six Major Raleigh. The Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance unlocked $1.45 million in direct economic impact for Greater Raleigh, according to the report, generating over 1,000 job inquiries, attracting more than 2,600 daily attendees, with over 70% of them traveling from other states and countries. Additionally, the event was broadcast to a global audience on Twitch in 15+ languages, garnering more than 16 million livestream views and over 6 million total hours watched.
 
The NBA 2K League recognized outstanding achievement in team marketing and business operations for the 2019 season when the league presented its NBA 2K League Team Business Awards during the NBA 2K League Fall Workshop in Indianapolis. Magic Gaming received two awards – the Partnership of the Year Award and the Local Activation of the Year Award – while Raptors Uprising GC earned the Digital Innovator of the Year Award and Pacers Gaming won the Best Use of Streaming Award.
