TNT gave a straight to series order for Raised By Wolvesa serialized sci-fi series from Ridley Scott (The Martian), who will also make his television directorial debut with the series. Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) will serve as showrunner as well as a writer. Scott’s Scott Free Productions is producing in association with Turner’s Studio T and Madhouse Entertainment, with Scott, Guzikowski, David W. Zucker (The Man in the High Castle) and Jordan Sheehan (The Terror)and Madhouse’s Adam Kolbrenner (Prisoner) and Robyn Meisinger (Prisoners) serving as exec producers. 
 
Turner and former J. Crew creative director Jenna Lyons are teaming for a multi-disciplinary partnership that includes TV, e-commerce, social media and direct to consumer platforms. In collaboration with Turner, Lyons will share her curatorial perspective in a weekly television series produced by Our House Media with Matt Hanna, Simon Lloyd and Hillary Olsen executive producing.
 
George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures inked a first-look deal with Paramount TV, for television, digital and episodic projects. Paramount and Smokehouse have already teamed for Hulu’s upcoming Catch-22.
 
Rooster Teeth is partnering with DC to produce comic books based on Rooster Teeth original IPs, including global anime-style phenomenon RWBY and the mecha-anime style series, gen:LOCKComic books will be available both physically and digitally in 2019.
 
Topic Studios grabbed TV and film rights to upcoming sci-fi novella Unauthorized Bread, about the impact of technological advancement and class divisions, by Cory Doctorow.
 
Patricia Heaton (The Middle) will star in and exec produce Carol’s Second Act, reports Deadline, about a woman who, after raising two children and retiring as a teacher, decides to become a doctor. Comedy from Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins (Trophy Wife), Kapital Entertainment, FourBoys Entertainment and CBS Television Studios, has a series commitment from CBS.
 
Netflix is in final talks to acquire Albuquerque’s ABQ Studios, with plans to use the space for production of comedy Daybreak and dramas Chambers and Messiah. New Mexico and Albuquerque sweetened the deal with incentives totaling $14.5 million, expecting Netflix will bring in $1 billion in production over the next ten years, and create up to 1000 jobs. Last week, the streamer signed a lease on a Hollywood office building.
 
GRB Entertainment has rebranded to GRB Studios. Founder and CEO Gary R. Benz said that the company is expanding its focus to worldwide growth as a premiere content production and distribution company. Scot Cru has been promoted to President of the reorganized company; he was previously president of GRB’s International sales and distribution activity.

Comedy Central weekly stand-up series This Week at the Comedy Cellar promises “the hottest of hot takes served fresher than ever,” starting Friday, October 26 at 11p.
 
With aerials, time-lapses ands super slow motion cinematography, The Wild Andes captures life and landscapes in the Andes Mountains. Three-part series launches on Smithsonian Channel on Wednesday, November 7 at 8p.
 
Insight TV, broadcaster and producer of native UHD content, is launching eight-episode Street Art Challenge, focused on global visual artists who create images on metropolitan backdrops. Show premieres Tuesday, October 16 on Insight TV and Insight.TV. 
 
Bravo’s Dirty John, starring Connie Britton (Nashville) and Eric Bana (Deadfall), premieres Sunday, November 25 at 10p. Limited series is based on the articles and true crime podcast from LA Times reporter Christopher Goffard.

Finesse Mitchell has his first stand-up special, Finesse Mitchell: The Spirit Told Me to Tell You, premiering Friday, October 19 at 10p on Showtime. Mitchell had a three-year run on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
 
 
DIGITAL DATA
 
Microsoft is testing Project xCloud, a video game streaming that gives users a console-like experience as they play Xbox games on phones and tablets. The service will be open to “public trials” next year.
 
Facebook introduced two new video communications devices for the home, Portal and Portal+, with voice-controlled technology optimized for video calling with tablet-sized screens. Portal+ features a 15-inch, rotating display, while Portal features the same core features and a 10-inch display. No aiming necessary – once a chat starts, the device will find the people in the room and keep the in the frame.
 
Next-gen news net Newsy announced it is the first brand to have an app in the news category on Portal and Portal. When a user initiates the Newsy app, Portal will open a video news reel covering recent top stories.
 
Google said it is phasing out Google+ just as the Wall Street Journal reported that a bug was discovered in March that allowed developers to access personal data from about 500,000 users who had opted to keep it private. It’s not the bug that caused the shuttering, but a small fan base. Google+ launched in 2011.
 
YouTube and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s HITRECORD are teaming to produce a TV special featuring rapper Logic that will have him collaborating with fans to create a new song. “YouTube is home to an endless combination of creative collaborations and we’re excited to see what magic happens next when the world is invited to join in on this ambitious musical project,” said Susanne Daniels, global head of original content at YouTube. Special is slated to stream next year.

Nielsen Catalina Solutions, specialist in data and measurement for the CPG industry, has expanded its Advanced TV Suite to include purchase-based ad targeting, allowing CPG marketers to measure data-driven linear TV, addressable TV, OTT video, and connected TV. “Not only does this new capability simplify the targeting process for advertisers and agencies, but it also expands the availability of media inventory on the TV screen that can be targeted at the household-level to platforms across the ecosystem, including Hulu, Roku and SlingTV, reaching the elusive cord-cutter and cord-never audiences with digital-like precision,” said the companies.
 
 
ADVERTISING & BRANDS
 
Ford chose BBDO as its new lead creative agency, a slot WPP had held for 75 years. Wieden+Kennedy was named an innovation partner. In a new agency model, WPP’s dedicated agency GTB will remain part of Ford’s team, taking the lead on media buying and planning, shopper and performance marketing, customer relationship marketing and multicultural. “In this pivotal moment of reinvention and transformation, we’re excited to partner with world-class creative agencies to unlock the full potential of the iconic Blue Oval,” said Ford group VP, CMO Joy Falotico.
 
Under a Bill of Rights proposed by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California), advertisers would have to get the opt-in consent of Americans before collecting or sharing their personal data. The proposal also includes net neutrality rules, including giving people the right to access and use the internet without service providers blocking, throttling, or engaging in paid prioritization.

British Culture Minister Jeremy Wright told Sky News that he has left Comcast “no doubt at all about the importance of editorial independence of Sky News,” adding he found assurances by Comcast, expected to close on the acquisition of Sky in October, “persuasive.” Still, said Wright, “We want to make sure they are committed to Sky News in the long term.”
 
AMC Networks International Southern Europe and ATRESMEDIA Internacional have partnered to launch an offering of Spanish-language TV channels in Europe. AMCNISE will offer Canal Cocina (cooking), Canal Decasa (lifestyle), Sol Musica (Spanish music) and Somos (classic Spanish cinema); while ATRESMEDIA will supply Atrescine (contemporary Spanish cinema), Atreseries (series) and Antena 3 Internacional (news and entertainment). The package will be marketed through the main European pay-TV operators.
 
TCB Media Rights signed a two-year first-look deal with Argonon-owned indie Transparent TV. Under the deal, TCB will represent Transparent’s back catalogue, including 33 hours of Botched Up Bodies
 
Drive announces international sales to broadcast partners for a range of factual content, including Italy’s RTI Mediaset Group acquisition of Eight Days that Made Rome, and Sky Italia’s licensing of a package of ARTE programs including Marilyn: The Auction of a LifetimeBacchus Uncovered: Ancient God of Ecstasy and Venus Uncovered: Ancient Goddess ofLove.

Rooftop Film & TV has secured worldwide distribution rights (excluding UK, Ireland and India) to the feature-length documentary Kaiser! The Greatest Footballer Never To Play Football.  
 
Scottish factual and format indie Bees Nees is launching Beezr Studios, a production division to develop content for the international market. Paul Crompton joins as creative director and ex-ITV Director of Television Simon Shaps is onboard in a consultancy role.
 
Among the Armoza Formats shows set for MIPCOM are Dance Revolution, factual entertainment show Singerella and culinary series The Food Ambassadors.
 
The merchandise roll-out for Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 is continuing across EMEA. The brand has raked in 1 billion views on Cartoon Network and dedicated Ben 10 YouTube channels across the area since 2016.
 
Electus International has secured a local format licensing deal for the remake of reality dating format Matchmakers from Belgium-based production company Roses are Blue to ProSiebenSat.1 in Germany. Electus has also optioned the format to the Banijay Group across Italy, Denmark, and India via its respective local production companies DRYMEDIA, Nordisk Film TV and Banijay Asia; and to Reservoir Productions in France.

Fox Networks Group reached a new carriage deal with Altice USA, after negotiations that were tense enough for Fox to run spots alerting Altice subscribers that they could lose programming, including football. The retrans deal includes Fox’s WNYW-TV, FS1, FS2, Nat Geo and FX.

Discovery’s cable nets saw 3Q18 ratings growth across the portfolio, landing 3 channels in the top spots in Sales Prime among W25-54. ID landed at #1, TLC #2 and HGTV #3. Discovery closed the quarter with its best ever portfolio Sunday night on September 30, in which its top 5 channels delivered a cumulative 5.1 rating for W25-54 at 9p. The Sunday was led by TLC’s 90 Day Fiance, Food Network’s Halloween Wars, Discovery’s Alaskan Bush People, ID’s American Monster, and HGTV’s Caribbean Life. “This amazing performance from our cable nets – especially on the opening week of broadcast’s fall season – proves that Discovery’s collection of brands is to women what the NFL is to men on Sunday nights,” said Jon Steinlauf, Chief U.S. Ad Sales Officer for Discovery.
 
The season premiere of Doctor Who, with Jodie Whittaker, delivered 8.2 million viewers and a 40.1% share on UK’s BBC One, enough to beat the debuts of previous doctors David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.
 
Last week’s episode of Bravo’s Married to Medicine was the highest-rated episode of the season-to-date across total viewers, delivering 1.3 million total viewers (up +3% vs. prior week) in Live+3. Each week of Married has consecutively grown, with a +20% growth on total viewers from first to fifth episode this season.
 
Against NBC’s Sunday Night Football and the season premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead, ABC’s Dancing With the Stars: Juniors delivered 4.4 million viewers and a 0.7/3 rating among A18-49, gaining 6% from its first hour to its second. Shark Tank followed with a series low 0.6 and 3.05 million viewers.
 
With coverage the vote on, and swearing in of, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, Fox News Channel had its highest-rated Saturday Total Day viewership (4.3 million total viewers) since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and highest-rated Saturday in prime time since the Iraq War in 2003.

Chris Bettes was promoted to Senior Vice President of Brand Marketing & Creative at Twentieth Century Fox Television. Bettes will be responsible for leading the creative and brand strategy for the worldwide marketing team.
 
Vilynx, the artificial intelligence company with a platform focused exclusively on media, appointed CNN/U.S. President Jon Klein as president. Klein will build out a U.S. presence for the company, which counts MSNBC, NBC News and other major broadcast media companies among the customers for its machine learning platform.  
 
Chris Thomas, BBDO CEO, Americas, is stepping down after nine years at the company. He will stay until a successor is found.
 
Tina Perry, Executive Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs and board member of OWN, has been named General Manager, effective January 2019. Perry replaces Erik Logan, leaving after seven years to join the World Surf League as President of Content, Media and WSL Studios.
 
 
IN MEMORIAM
 
Former advertising executive Martin (Marty) J. Waters died on October 5. He was 78. Waters was the head of buyers for BBD&O before creating unwired networks at Jordan, Case & McGrath, and eventually started media consulting business Alchemy Media Advisors with Sandy Solon.
