NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
The Alibaba Group, the e-commerce giant operating out of China, closed its trading day on Friday at $93.89 a share – a 38 percent increase from its initial public offering price. The New York Times reports the strong debut could mean a bump for Yahoo, which owns a large stake in the company. As of Friday, Yahoo’s percentage was worth about $38 billion. Yahoo is currently estimated to be worth $3 billion for its core business.
 
YouTube announced its biggest investment yet in its mega creators since its $100 million YouTube Original Channels Initiative in 2011. Recode reports that YT didn’t give a specific number, but that it plans to invest “millions.”
 
Machinima re-launched its YouTube channel for premium scripted video, called Machinima Prime. The channel currently has more than 1.4 million subscribers, and is known for its short films and web series based on video games and comic books along for studio partners like Warner Bros. and Paramount. Machinima will start rolling out original content on a daily basis, produced by YT creators like Wayside Creations, Bat in the Sun, and The Good Cops. To publicize the re-launch, the video network released a trailer featuring CEO Chad Gustein ordering Senior Manager of Programming and Development Woody Tondorf to produce excitement for MP with $30, a Japanese comic book, and a gun.
 
Endemol Beyond debuted its new eSports channel Legends of Gaming on Friday. The channel will feature a gaming-competition series to premiere later this month, and contestants from all gaming genres are encouraged to dress up as their alter egos based on their online personas. YT gamer Ali A (5.5 million subscribers across two channels) will host the League of Legend’s competition stages, and provide commentary and highlight reels of the event.

CONTENT MEDIA

 
NBC’s The Voice will partner with Nissan for the next three years to create multimedia content for fans throughout the phases of the show, which premieres today (Monday) at 8p ET.  For the first time, viewers can use The Voice Official App to vote for their favorite contestants live during the broadcast; Nissan will also sponsor The Voice Tailgate as a behind-the-scenes, pre-show social media event for fans to interacts with the artists, judges and others.

Internet hit (5.1+ million Vine followers) Brent Rivera stars in the latest phase of Michelin’s “Beyond the Driving Test” campaign to promote driving safety and raise awareness of tire maintenance. The 16-year-old, who just obtained his driver’s license, worked with the tire company to create a video that lives on his YouTube channel (690,000 subscribers).
